The DIKW model stops at wisdom, but that's not enough anymore. You need judgment after that: the ability to question inherited wisdom and decide what's actually still relevant. Without it, you're stuck defending the past instead of building the future.

What is missing from the DIKW triangle? This particular model has been around in various forms for many years and talks about what we do with the data and information we have and how do we make decisions. So let's have a look. So down here at the bottom, we have the data that we collect— data, statistics, information, we need to gather it. In a world of deep data, we have an overabundance of it. But what do we do with the data? We have to turn it into information. We have to have some kind of summary or analysis of that data so that we can use it. Once we have that information, we have actual knowledge about the conversation at hand. That knowledge is great. What do we do with it? Well, that's where we're going to apply wisdom. And that should be the end of the triangle. That should be the end of the conversation. But I'm going to suggest in today's world with so much information, artificial intelligence generating content, competing data and information from around the world, a polarized world, after wisdom we're going to have to apply either judgment Or discernment. We need to actually evaluate the content that we've collected. So we have to be ready to question our inherited wisdom, the knowledge that has been passed down to us, the wisdom, intelligence, best practice of the profession that we are a part of. If we're not questioning that, we're not applying any judgment or discernment about whether this is relevant for the future. So let's apply some judgment to the data, information, knowledge, wisdom that we have. Let's see if it really is relevant for now and into the future, because we need to remember that what got us here won't get us into the future. We're going to have to abandon some models and discard some old concepts that no longer serve us into the future. And when you do that, you're applying real discernment. You are actually developing thinking that is fit for the future.
