Our problem as busy leaders is in managing today's work, but we never get time to think about tomorrow. We have to balance the demands of today with a responsibility to prepare for the future. Our typical response is to focus even harder on today's problems and hope there'll be time later for the future. We put pressure on KPIs, targets, productivity metrics, and we schedule an offsite session in November. to think about the future, but future planning never happens, not when the future keeps getting postponed. So what is the futures thinking move? Well, the first thing is to put some time aside every day, just like we're saving for retirement. What does that look like in practice? Well, let me introduce you to the 3 horizons. Horizon 1 is today's business. We need to manage it, but as leaders, we should get the team to do the work Because as a leader, we need to focus on Horizon 2. Horizon 2 is emerging opportunities, the things that we need to understand so that we can prepare our teams for the future. And if you really want to increase your value and impact as a leader, then you need to be making time for Horizon 3. Horizon 1 pays the bills. It's important and needs to be worked on, but you can delegate some of that time because you really do need to invest in Horizon 2 and Horizon 3 so that you can be valuable to both your team and your organization. The goal isn't to choose between today and tomorrow, but to put the future on the agenda. Every Monday meeting, every team debrief, every board meeting, we need to be putting some time aside for the future. So what would the results be? Well, the first thing is that you demonstrate your value to the board because your anticipation of the future means that they can sidestep potential threats and find profitable options. You can defuse the anxiety of your team. That's stress, not horns, but you can defuse their anxiety because you've already paid attention to what is coming. Future-ready organizations don't wait for an annual offsite to think about the future. They see it emerging daily because they have a plan to pay attention. And for you personally, you find more satisfaction in your work and your career because you're moving from reaction and response to creation and strategy. Future fit leaders don't wait until tomorrow to think about tomorrow. Thank you.
