LIVE! Splitting wood and talking business 1/2

A live YouTube session where Chris Koerner splits firewood with his kids while discussing how to start and run a small firewood business. He mixes practical demo (wood types, splitting, estimated volumes) with business advice (pricing, Facebook Marketplace sales, buying by the acre vs selling by the foot) and encourages action over perfection. The tone is informal, candid, and instructional.

All right, welcome, Kerr nerds. I don't know if anyone's here, if anyone's going to be here, but it's Sunday afternoon and I wanted to split some wood with my kids. So I thought, why? I go live and we'll talk about business while we do it. So if you have any questions, this is only on YouTube live. Ask them, maybe we'll see them. I don't know how this works. I've never done like a vertical shorts live before. This is new. So if I don't answer your questions, it's either because I forgot or I can't see them. But I would love your questions about tree trimming business, firewood business, any business, me, life, pizza, barbecue, you name it. So I'm gonna start splitting some wood, and worst case, you get to watch some wood being split. So let's see how this goes. All right, start this bad boy up.
You'll let you zoom in at all. How many people are watching? One, zero. My mom, nine. We got nine people. All right, let's give it a shot. Beautiful. Isn't that cool? Oh, man. So if you're just now joining us, I hope you can hear me over this. I started a firewood business. There some guys to go to church with. Kaden, Devin. Shout out. Kate and Devin. Now, let me be very clear here. I'm not trying to make it look like I'm doing all the work in this business. I just happen to live where the business is being hosted. Kate and Devin have done about 98 of everything right now. So let's get that out of the way right now. Do I know what I'm doing? No. Have I ever spoke with before other than like for 10 minutes while I tested this thing out? No, this is my first time ever. But this is for a reason. At some point, you will see a log fall on my foot. That's okay. You may notice I'm wearing Crocs. That's because I was wearing Crocs today. In some ways, this is very strategic. In other ways, it's not at all. It's strategic in the sense that I want to encourage people to start businesses even if they don't know what they're doing. Because oftentimes we use that as an excuse to not start, to not do, to not act. So what may look as foolishness from the outside is a partial foolishness and B, to bias for action. We don't let insecurities prevent us from starting. Can you zoom in on the one. Little double split here? Huh? Little double split. Ski. I'll call this a duplex. Duplex to a four plex. Good looking wood. Good one. You want to show the win? Let's stack everything we got from this one log. That's still real big. I'm gonna stack everything from this one log here. What's up? 52 people here. Show me the camera. We got 52 people here. It's incredible. 52 people. That's like two elementary school classes worth of people. That's like the seating capacity of a Chipotle. 45 people. Oh, I'm losing them. I'm losing them. That's all right. Anyway, back to the business stuff. So I'm going to camp out with some Houston church. And they said, oh, brother Kerr, how do we start a business? We want to make money. And I said, well, read my newsletter. Follow me on Twitter. Like, oh, yeah, but like, how do we do it? What should we do? And then it just so happens that on this Campbell, we have a wood splitter just like this one. He said, why not follow it? I said, I've got a tree trimming business. You get the wood for free. I live on a few acres. No hoa. We can start a wood on my property. It was perfect. It was manganese. I know we've got a deal. Or in our junior situation here, my son tells me there's 85 of y'. All. I'm betting about 72 or just watching. Did you want to see me lose some fingers? I might. I just might. I would never know just for the content, but I am easily distractible. So this is Arizona Ash. We're gonna see what happens. I'm calling the segment will it split? And we don't want to go against the grain. I'm stupid, but not that stupid. All right, well, will it split? All right, it will. It will split. You know what? Let's go against the grain. I'm an against the grain kind of guy, so it works. Look at that. You know what's gonna happen there? Too much special is going to fly up, hit me in the face going by the school and all that. But I'm not that desperate, okay? We're not doing against the grain any pine. Pine is a softwood. This is a hardwood. Not a good idea. All right. Look at that. Got some weird looking firewood. But as they say in Alabama, that dog will hunt. Put those in a different spot. Oh, man, 120 people. We got 120 people here. That's 1 1,000 of the amount of people that Brian Danny Stadium and Nick Saban field can hold on any given Saturday in the fall. It's a lot of people. I think this is pine, but I don't know. I don't know. It's not oak. I'm an oak guy. I smoke barbecue post oak. Oh, man. Even Waffles is into it. Here's Sean Waffles. Even he's into it. Here we go. Double grappler duplex to a four Plex. Fell on my foot. There it is. There's my Dale Earnhardt moment. Now, is that not cool or what? Look at that. Got a big old knot there. Why not? That's what I say. Now this wood is quite wet. It is not seasoned. It's not optimized for firewood burning. If that pill is strategic, we're the bias for action. What's better, burning Greenwood or a customer? Complain about greenwood or not wanting. Well, I'm gonna watch. I'm gonna launch. I gotta wait for the firework to be seasoned. Yeah, I'm gonna do it. No, you're not. You're not gonna do it. Here's the thing about starting not just businesses, but anything. If you don't do it now, you won't do it. CFA R for action. You do a double decker duplex situation. How many people we got? 113. Yeah, 113 in here. Y' all are some sick puppies. All right, so the business plan. Here's the business plan. Collect firewood. Spot fire way miss. Buy one for sale on Facebook marketplace. Now, if we. If we do not sell it on Facebook marketplace, we got to get more creative, but we'll sell it on Facebook marketplace. Another secret weapon for you? The other secret weapon is the fact that people don't want to buy from a 37 year old for 700 bucks a cord that already owns a bunch of businesses and isn't very hungry. I mean, look at me. I'm not very hungry. I'm doing just fine. Now, if I were a 37 year old and were hungry, either literally or metaphorically, and I was driven and I was wanting to start a business to feed my family and I did a good job of conveying that story and people would be more likely to buy from. But if I'm a 17 year old or a 16 year old in cave or dubbing, trying to earn money for college, trying to learn entrepreneurship, they're gonna be more likely to buy from you. So, yes, that won't be my number one selling point. Is this one season? No. Is it the most optimal firewood? No. Do we live in A climate that fares. Wow. Let's fire, let's go. We live in Dallas. It's hot 13 months out of the year. Those are all excuses to not start. You stack these up. All right, so how much time we've been going. I'm trying to gauge, like how much time we've been doing. 10 minutes, 14 minutes. How many logs we got there? What a lot. So a cord of wood is 4 by 4 by 8ft. Okay? So if you think about the average that of a truck, that's going to be about 4 by 8 by 2, 4ft wide, 8ft long, 2ft tall. So the average truck bed fits about half a quarter wood. Right now, in North DFW, a half a quarter wood goes for about 300 to $400. That would be two truckloads worth of wood. And so what would you say that is right there? You got about. 2ft by 3ft by foot and a half 6, about 9 cubic feet. So 4 by 4 by 8. 4 by 4. 16 times 8. So call this like 8% of a cord. 4 by 4 by 4. 16 by 4. 64. So 400 for 64 cubic feet and that's 9. So that's 15. That's about $60 worth of wood. Not too much more than $60 worth of wood because you buy by the acre and you sell by the foot. Okay, the smaller quantities that you sell equals the more work you put into it, equals the more money you can sell each bundle for. While you buy 100 acres of land for a million dollars, you split it into 100, 101 acre home sites, you sell them for 20 grand each. That's 2 million bucks. You double your money, you got development costs, you got entitlement costs. It's not all profit, but you buy by the acre, you sell by the foot. So in 14 minutes, we made about $60 worth of firewood, give or take. Now for you calculator wielders watching this, type it away in your spreadsheet. You do you. Okay, My cameraman isn't very talkative. We need a name for this type. What do you think? A double one. A double one. Give it up to Jesse. That's my life. A double one. Like a mobile home. Oh, oh. Well, it split. Oh, oh, oh, it will split. Look at, that's a good looking double one. What a beautiful name for it. Look at that. Look at that. Isn't that beautiful? You want to zoom in on that. You want to get up close on that. That's some good looking wood. What if I would. You know it, bro. How many people we. 141. Right. Hey, you're gonna follow me by this point. I'm gonna need you to subscribe by this point, if you don't already. Look at that. Look at that. Here, feed me. So if you're looking for me to give you some expert advice from the and say, you know, you really want to be between 12 and 18 inches, you know, you really want a 18 moisture content, I don't know any of that. I'm just making this up as I go, which, really, everyone is. The only difference with me is I'm honest about it. I don't know what I'm doing. I don't know what I'm doing. Why not? Oh, like butter. Like butter. Oh, beautiful. We should sell this as is the homeowner. Be like, you sure you know what you're doing? No, I was actually very open about that. On YouTube Live. I call this the tentacle. Yeah, this one's pretty wet. It's pretty wet. I need some seasoning. We're gonna roll with it. What else we got? Do a small one. How many we got? All right. Nothing. Oh, you want to get closer? Here, let's put the camera right on it. Like, hey, come stand right here. Put it right on that. Right over the top. Right in on that. Beautiful. Well, wrap it up. All right, let me cut this off. All right, well, we did about 20.
Minutes of wood splitting. 70, 80 bucks worth of wood acquired for $0. And we're gonna try to sell this, and we'll be very upfront that it's not very seasoned because we don't want returns. Right. But we're gonna see what we can do. So thank you for joining us. You want to pan out real quick to the firewood that we got here? We probably got, I don't know, a couple cords here, but.
All right.
