"Death bed" Cold Call Strategy

A salesperson opens a cold call with a death-bed joke to disarm the prospect, then pitches AI-powered ad management and lead follow-up. Sales coach Christian Polk breaks down what worked: humor lowers defenses. What needs work: clearer value articulation and deeper pain-point discovery.

Hey, I'm on my deathbed and my last wish is to speak to the business owner. There we go. There we go. I wanted to ask you, could you use more leads right now? Are you fully booked up? Exactly. I mean, that's, that's everybody can, but you'll be surprised how many of these people don't want to grow. You know, they're just happy with their shitty stable life. What I do is I run advertisements like every other marketer, but what I do different from them is I integrate AI so that one, it follows up for you. So all the leads that you're not converting, I increase your conversion rates with AI follow-ups. And two, I pretty much— those are the only two things I do.
Now overall, this is pretty solid on a number of different things. Number one, what he does really well, he's very good at pattern interrupt using humor. The reason this works so well is number one, it gets other people that you're talking to, it gets them to laugh, release dopamine in their brain, more likely to lower the guard. Number two, it actually makes it more enjoyable for you. So if you've ever done a lot of outbound cold calling, different things along those lines, you know it's a fucking grind. Like you have to do something, something to actually keep you interested in what's going on and actually push through. That's another thing he did well is he pushed through a lot of the concern. Now, could he have been tighter on like how he's presenting the value and finding pain? Like, yeah, he could. But the thing I want to highlight here is again, just making it fun for you will make it fun for other people and you'll have a lot more fruitful conversation. That's why when I do follow-up, I send a lot of memes. I find memes funny. So when I send somebody a meme, I find it funny, I'm more likely to actually do it. If I'm more likely to do it, I'm more likely to get results from it. So don't always focus solely on, hey, is this the best way to do it every single time? Also incorporate in, how can I make this enjoyable for both me and the prospect so I'm more likely to do it? If you're more likely to do it, you'll get better results anyways.
