How i'd handle "Why ask these painful questions?"

Christian Polk explains how to ask uncomfortable questions without over-explaining yourself. Set a frame and let people conform to it. He uses a How I Met Your Mother joke about the word "bowl" to show how focused attention makes ordinary things feel strange.

I had people sometimes who were kind of questioning, like, why exactly you're asking all these painful questions, so to speak. It just depends. It depends on. Well, part of it is, like, what you're selling, how. Where the audience is. Oftentimes, man, you don't need to give a ton of justifiables. They're like, oh, I'm totally bought in. And it's like, just enough to get them to fall into the frame. And then once they start talking, then it becomes more and more abnormal to break out of the frame. Just from human beings perspective, the longer something's been going on, the more unlikely you are to break it. We're social beings. We don't want to do abnormal. You don't want to stick out. I would say if you get people back on track, I wouldn't be too much in your head. Here's what can happen. I've said this a thousand times, and now that I've said it a thousand times, I don't know how convincing it is. You can convince yourself of that, of anything if you say something and you really focus on it for a long enough period of time. Have you ever seen how I met your mother? I've seen bits of it, yeah. One of the jokes in there, he's like, if you say anything and you focus on it, it just becomes weird. The bit is he just says bowl for the next five minutes. And when you really do sit and think about it, like, bowl. It's a weird noise, but it's like, it's only when you sit and you focus on it and you make it weird and normal. Everyday context. If I say, hey, just go grab that bowl, you're not thinking, bull. Such a weird word. You're like, okay, cool, right? So just don't. Don't overanalyze it.
