"This has gotta wait." vs. $8M Closer

Christian Polk coaches someone who claims he works long hours to provide for his kids but admits spending little time with them. Polk pushes him to stop using family as an excuse and choose what he actually wants, exploring the resentment that builds when work wins.

Yeah, would that work for you, man?
Honestly, it's just a wait, man.
Well, I'm glad you're honest with me. When you say has to wait, like, what's coming up, dude?
My kids and my family. I just don't spend enough time with them, and this in itself is going to be a lot. My job I'm working right now is just one after the other.
Ultimately, for you, why would you even want to do this in the first place?
Like I said, my kids, my family, I need to provide for them.
Yeah, like you want to provide for them and like actually spend more time with them, right?
Right.
Can I be super straightforward with you without you getting upset at me?
Depends what it is.
They can't be both. Right now you're saying, oh, the reason I I need to do this is for my kids, to spend time with them, my family. And also the reason you can't do this is your family, the time you have. It's like, they can't be both, dude. Like, you have to choose. Your family can either be your excuse or they can be your reason you push through. Which one would you rather make them? Because it is a choice.
I do it because of them.
Why would you want to make them your reason?
That's why I'm working all this time. That's why I'm pushing myself.
If we allow them to be our excuse, what's gonna happen?
They just don't deserve that. And then also, like, look internally, man.
Like, you, one, not giving them a life that you really want to give them, but allow them to be your excuse, and we even let ourselves believe that, it's like, dude, people are very, very good at allowing themselves to believe just nonsense. If we allow ourselves to believe they're actually an excuse, how are you going to feel towards them?
I guess I resent them, put my anger on them.
Why would you ever, ever put your family in that position that you could even feel that way about them?
I don't, I don't know. I don't know.
What do we have to do to make sure we never put them in that position where you can feel that way about them? Number one. But number two, we're also doing everything in our power possible to actually step into being the dad we need to be, to spend more time with them? Like, what do we need to make sure we do?
I gotta do it for them.
So what do we need to do to make sure we're doing it for them?
Do it.
