Haunted House Painting || The Social Easel

In this 2018 live YouTube session, Christie Renee Hawkins guides viewers through a quick, kid‑friendly haunted‑house painting, demonstrating how to create a simple silhouette‑style composition with background sky, crooked house, windows, chimney, fence, owl, pumpkins, and moon. While painting, she interacts with the live chat, greeting participants by name, answering questions, and encouraging viewers to share the video. She announces a weekend contest where sharing the video and commenting "shared" enters viewers for a chance to win free online tutorials for her Halloween Cats or FolkArt Tree classes. Hawkins also uses the session to launch the Social Easel Online Paint Studio’s new individual‑class offering, explaining pricing ($35 per class), lifetime access, and how the classes differ from the monthly membership ($47/month). She walks through navigating the website, locating tutorials, and mentions upcoming releases. Throughout, she emphasizes the ease of the technique, the flexibility for kids, and the value of the online resources, ending with reminders to share completed paintings and a promise to announce contest winners on Monday.

Hey everybody, we are gonna do a quick little video today. I thought it would be fun to give you guys a project to do over the weekend. I'm gonna pull you up here, so as you guys are hopping on. Just say hi, let me know you're here. I've almost got you pulled up here. Hey, Terry and Marcia. Alright, so we're just getting started. I'm getting paint all over the place because I had a paint bottle explode on me. So we are going to do a little haunted house today. So this is one that I did last year and the year before. We're not going to do this exact one, but I'm going to show you how easy it is to do a haunted house, and you can make it whatever shape that you want to. Hi, Jean Ann and Linda and Pam. Okay, so as you guys are hopping on, comment, let me know where you're watching from. Um, right next to the comment button there is the share button. You're going to want to share this video because there will be a contest. So as you're hopping on, hit share and we'll get some more people on here watching with us. So this is just a really fun— sorry, I had to take a drink real quick. Really fun, quick Halloween project that you can do. I love painting the haunted houses. They're quick and easy, and you can do all kinds of different backgrounds for them. So we're just gonna start by— I'm just gonna make it simple because if you do this with kids, we want to keep it nice and simple. I did this with my nieces and nephew last year. So we're gonna start just by putting a really quick background down on here. And I've done one where it was just orange and it kind of had like a big moon shape, and then it was black above it, so kind of like a silhouette. You could do something like that, or you could do like some fun, like, sunset colors. So how many of you guys that are on here saw the little sneak peek of our Halloween cats video that we did in my group last night? Let me know if you guys saw that. We're gonna have a little contest here in just a bit once we get some people on here. And someone might just end up getting the online tutorial for the Halloween cats as a gift. So we're just making a fun sky right now. I've got some different color purples that I'm adding in, a little bit of orange. Thank you, V. Linda, it was just a little sneak peek. I just showed— I just recorded a little bit of the full video that I did with my membership last night. So if you guys have been with me a while, you remember me talking about the Social Easel Online Paint Studio. That's my membership group. And this, the Halloween cats, I'll show you in case you missed it. The Halloween cats was one of our paintings for October, so we taught— I taught that class last night and then just shared a quick little snip of that video. But I have some exciting news. So we've got a lot of you guys on here, so we're gonna do a little contest. Let me grab my notes real quick so I don't forget what I'm doing. All right, so what we're gonna do is you want to share the video, let people know they get a free little tutorial for the weekend. So share your video. After you've shared it, comment below that you have shared it, and we're gonna have 2 winners. So we're just gonna make this all about Halloween today. One person is going to win the free studio class, the online studio class to the Halloween cats, and another person is going to win the online class for our Chris— or not Christmas, our Halloween FolkArt tree. So these are both in my membership. But here's the exciting news. So we've got the contest. So 2 people are gonna win. There's gonna be 2 winners. And you just have to share it to be entered and then comment underneath that you shared it. So we're gonna have 2 winners for that. I'm gonna pick those winners on Monday morning. So this will run the whole weekend, so it gives everyone some time to get entered into the contest. But here's the exciting thing. So you guys know about my membership group, and a lot of you couldn't join the membership, but you still wanted to learn how to paint online. So here's the good news. Now they're sold as individual classes on our website. So Christie Renee Hawkins, my website designer, has got it all set up. It's beautiful. So if there were some paintings that you were eyeing, um, like the sunflowers or the mason jars or Monet's Garden, the Eiffel Tower— there's all kinds of paintings that we've done over the past several months. Those are all going to be sold individually now. And the great thing about that is you get your own— you get a color list, you get the video, and you have lifetime access to it. So as soon as you purchase it, it'll take you right to it and you never lose access to it. So you have that video forever and you can do the painting by yourself or you can invite a group of girls over and do it. Christie just posted the link, so I'm super excited about this online paint studio. You see how I like to talk with my hands. Um, so I'm so— um, let me read guys' comments really quick. And if you— Sherry, if you don't win, you will be able to buy the class too. So there will be something for everyone. So these individual classes, again, these are— most of them are done on 16 by 20. You can do a 16 by 20. This is the Halloween Cats or the Folk Art tree. For those of you that are just joining, you want to hit the share button and then comment "shared" underneath it and let me know you did, because we're doing a contest and there's going to be 2 winners. One person is going to win the online tutorial for the FolkArt tree. The other person is going to win the online tutorial for the Halloween cats. So this is going to be our October Halloween contest, and a winner will be picked on Monday. So these individual lessons are only $35 apiece. So it's less than coming to a paint night with me. It leaves you— you're getting a full-on class just like you would if you came to paint with me. But in my opinion, you get a better view because you're up close and personal and you can pause it, rewind it, save it, come back to it. So for $35, you get lifetime access to that painting and you can have friends over to do it with you, do it by yourself. Whatever you want. So we're super excited about it, and this is perfect for those of you that didn't join the membership but still wanted access to some of those online videos. So again, they're $35 each, and then this is a good kind of like starter for you. If you do it and you like it and you decide you want more, when we open the membership back up, you would then of course have the opportunity to join the membership, which is even a better deal because it's only $47 a month for the membership, and then you have access to all the different paintings. So who's excited about the online studio classes? I'm super excited about them. So those are up and ready. We've been working on it, and it is ready to go. So if you guys are excited, shoot me some hearts and thumbs up. Let me know if you have any questions, and hopefully everyone has shared, and just make sure you comment "shared" once you've done it. Okay, so Sherry, the, the membership group is not going to open back up until 2019, but these online classes, the individual classes, are available right now. You can go to the website right now and pick out which one you want. So it's great to have in the meantime if you know you want to do the membership when we open it back up again. So we're going to start our actual haunted house here. We've got our background. I kind of let that dry a little bit, just put a black bottom down below. So we want kind of a crooked, crazy haunted house. So I'm just going to come down at an angle like this. Pull another one over here. The fun thing about this and why kids love it so much is because there is no right or wrong. It does not have to look exactly like mine. You can make it wider if you want. And let me show you this. Let's say you do this and you're like, I didn't mean for it to be that skinny. Very easy to just change it up. Then you can just fill this in, so it's not going to matter. At all. We're gonna put a little doorway right here, and then we're gonna come across, and I wanna have kind of an angled section of the house there. Add a little roof on. So the actual building of the haunted house is very fun and very simple. We're not gonna fill everything all the way in yet because I want to leave some spaces for little windows. Can add a couple of these in, and sometimes it's cute— see how that kind of looks like a face? You could purposely leave it like that, maybe add a little circle window that's gonna go right there. Kind of have a face in the middle of your, of your haunted house. And then we want to add kind of a fun little tower up here. So again, I'm kind of angling back the same way I did that, come across, and now we're just flipping that shape. We're gonna mirror this shape up, so I'm just gonna pull it up here and There. But don't you love how crazy all the angles can be? So it's really hard to mess up on this kind of painting. So those of you that just joined, if you are just joining— and sorry for those of you that have been on here since the beginning, but I want to make sure everyone knows— we are doing a contest because we're launching the Social Easel online paint studio classes, which are individual classes. You can buy the full painting tutorials to some of the paintings taken from my membership group. But today what we're doing, once you guys share this video, comment shared, you're gonna get entered into a contest to win the online tutorial for either the Halloween cats or our Halloween FolkArt tree. So these are two fun Halloween paintings, and we're gonna have two winners. So you just have to share and comment below to get entered in that. So I'm gonna jump back over here, pull this down just a little bit, and then I want to have just a crazy little chimney running off the top here. Maybe have it come over, so I'm doing a rectangle one way, a rectangle the other way, and then we're just gonna come up just a little bit. Mine's going off the page just a tiny bit. I made it a little taller than what I intended, but you can kind of get the idea that you can do that there. Let's add a little window in here. Maybe another little arched one like that, and we'll start filling these in. Thank you, ladies. How many of you— I'm recognizing, I recognize some of the names on here. How many of you, this is your first time watching or painting with me? Let me know where you're watching from. And what do you guys think so far about the little haunted house? Isn't it fun and cute and probably simpler than what you thought it would be? I like it because It's fast. So it's awesome to do with kids. And you've got the whole month of October. You could save this project and go back and watch it. If you watch it later, if you miss the live from the very beginning, all you have to do is go back to the videos on my page and it will be underneath there. And depending on if you're on your phone or your desktop, there's even a tab that will say live. Videos, and then it'll be at the very top of that. And there's all kinds of other fun tutorials that I have in there that we did Facebook Lives prior to opening up our membership group. So if you're new to the Social Easel, you can hop over there and watch a bunch of my other videos as well. All kinds of good information in there. Yes, not all ladies, you're right. And I have— if William was on here, he'd probably scold me too. We have our first guy in our inner tribe and our membership group, and he's loving it so far. So this is not just— this is not just for ladies. I'm just so used to saying that, but definitely for guys too. Hey, Jani. Hi, Pam. Pam, it's your first time watching a live video? I did not know that. I love it when you guys get on here with me live because, you know, I'm here by myself, and that way I can talk to you. So we're just going in, filling in all the black here. Yes, this one is super fun to paint, Bonnie. Awesome, Pam. Well, I'm glad you got to join us on here today. Nancy, this is like a size 2 round brush. You can use whatever size round you want. Excuse me. You just don't want something too skinny. You want enough that it can hold a decent amount of paint, because if you have that section there— well, welcome to all you first-timers. There's lots of fun ones to go back and watch if you're new. Okay, so yes, I think the round is better than a flat too. It's just easier to, to play with. We're gonna add a little crazy crooked fence over here and just pull down. You see why I love this? Because There's no straight perfect lines because the Halloween style is all crazy and all over the place, so you can do it however you want. And then we'll add a little cat on here, so kind of like from our Halloween cat, our big version, we'll add a little small version. All right, this cat needs a tail. Let's add a tail down here. Make sure my filming's going okay here. It's not freezing up on you guys or anything. So we got our little cat over there. I'm gonna make this a little bit wider over here, and then I want to add like the little fence up at the top here. See, I'm just kind of dragging my brush across there, so I'm not putting down a ton of pressure. I'm just kind of dragging it across really quick. We'll add some little lines up here too. Maybe some little birds out in the sky. You could add bats if you wanted to, or have a spider coming down from something. We've done some— I've done one where I've had a spider come down in the doorway. Or you can, you can do two things. With these. You can— on my original from years ago, I just left the orange behind here, and then we're just going to come in and add our little window lines in. So this is like the simplest version, and again, I want them to kind of be messy and not perfect because it just kind of adds to the character of the painting. Or you could go back in like in the one I showed you at the beginning, and I have like a pale yellow inside there. So you could choose which— either one, either one that you like. All right, what else do I want to add? I need to add these little lines up here. These are fun because you could really— you can get super creative with these because there's so many different elements. That you can add to them. And if my— if I had a bigger space or if I would have made my house a little smaller, I would have shown you a tree. Here, why don't we do this? I'll do— since I don't have a tree, how about I do a little owl up here? I'll show you guys how to do an owl. And we'll add a little pumpkin down here, right in front of our front door. Maybe another couple over here. Yeah, I like the pale yellow too. Hey, Kristen! So you could stack some pumpkins up over there, and we'll do a little owl up here on this corner. So for the owl, I With the cat, we had a really skinny neck. For the owl, it's going to be a little bit fatter. Very similar to how I do my birds, if you've seen me do the bird tutorial. I'm going to zoom you guys in a little bit closer. Almost too much glare on that. We'll see if this is better. And then the owl just has these little ears out to the side too. So very simple. I love doing this style because everything's easy and simple to do. So you could either add like some more fence over here if you wanted to, just kind of pull that across. Or if you had a little bit more room— we'll just throw one on here really quick. Maybe I can make a super skinny one. See how I'm just kind of— I load my brush up with plenty of paint, and then I'm just kind of pulling it up while I'm doing that. So we'll have just a crazy little crooked tree over here. And you could get a skinnier brush. Let's show you— let me see what I have over here. That one's not much skinnier. Here, this one's skinnier. So if you have like a skinnier brush and you're doing these little branches, it makes it even easier to do those. And it can go— it can overlap your tree, so it could either be in front or behind. That's the great thing about doing silhouette paintings. So you kind of get the idea. We got a nice little tree here, and then you could come in and add some little, like, curlicues if you wanted to make it a little bit fancier on the haunted house. So there you go. How fun is that? And then you could always go back and, like I said, you could add like a moon, or if you want to go inside of these and make them pale yellow I'll go ahead and I'm gonna show you guys how to do a quick little moon up here, so if you're wanting to do it, I've already got white on my palette. I just need to add a little bit of yellow. Going back to my round brush, and I've got pale yellow and white on my brush, so I've got two different colors. We'll make the moon about right here. So I'm just going around in a circular motion like that. The more white you have, the more it's gonna cover better. So it doesn't have to be a perfect circle. Now my style is to usually have some of the fun lines around the moon like this Obviously this moon's much, much smaller, so I'm just gonna real— I've still got that paint in my brush, and I'm not gonna press down too hard, but I'm just gonna start kind of rotating around, and I'm picking up and touching down. So you could have it go out as far as as you want. So you kind of get the idea. Then you're gonna flip your brush around. We're gonna use that back part of it, get paint on it, add some fun little stars. You can add as many as you want. Hey, Jesse! Good, I'm glad she will. I think that all the kids are gonna love this. My nieces and nephews and my girls had so much fun doing this last year. We all set up in the garage and I taught all 6 of them at a time, so that was really fun. So if you're just now joining, make sure you hit share. We're doing a contest. 2 people are gonna win. One person's gonna win our Halloween Cats online tutorial. The other person's gonna win our Folk Art Tree online painting tutorial. And the studio classes are now open, so if you did not get in in our membership and you wanted to do some online classes at home, now is your chance. Christie posted the link earlier, so I'm gonna— hopefully you guys see that, see that link posted, but you can just go to thesocial easel online studio dot com, and up at the top she's made it super pretty. I'm gonna see if I can— I'm actually gonna try to pull it up for you guys really quick on my iPad and so I can show you what it looks like. But we're so excited about this. So there's more to come. We've got some of the videos up, and then of course, you know, I do 2 new paintings with my membership group every single month, so then those will be added to the website, and you can buy them as individual classes. And we're gonna rotate them out, so it's not always just gonna be the same paintings. So they'll, they'll be available for a limited time, and then they'll rotate out, and we'll put some different ones up. But both the Halloween ones are gonna be up there, and I'm gonna make like a little— the Halloween ones will be up on Monday. So if you are not the winner and you want the Halloween classes, you will be able to go on there Monday and they will, they will be there. And I'm going to make a special promo code where you can get both videos at a discount. So if you decide to buy both, they're going to be a little bit cheaper for you. So this is what the website looks like. Let me flip this over here. So when you go to the website, it's just a Social Easel online paint studio. You can join our waitlist if you want to become a member. You can purchase the tutorials. These are the individual ones. And then if you're already one of my members, you have a nice easy big red button so you know exactly where to go so you have access to all your stuff. So I'm gonna take you guys into here, and this is where all of the classes are gonna be. So it's a Social Easel Paint Studio classes, and then this is kind of what it looks like. So this will be coming soon. This is a 3-part series that are some basics, so if you're a beginner, that'll be great. But we have our hydrangeas and sunflowers, Monet's Garden, Eiffel Tower, Fall Creek, Summer Dragonfly, and then we'll have the FolkArt tree. Everybody loves this truck. This teaches you how to do the truck exactly the way that I do, and it comes with a template. So that will be coming on Monday. The FolkArt tree will be coming on Monday, and then our Halloween cats, which is our most popular Halloween painting. Everyone loves this. Second most popular is the haunted house that I just taught you guys. So I hope you enjoyed that. I hope you guys are excited as I am about the online classes. I look forward to having you guys take those and let me know what you think and leave me some feedback. So let me make sure I'm not missing any questions here. All right, I think we are all set. So you guys have shared it, you've commented, shared, you are entered into the contest. So cross your fingers, we will pick a winner on Monday morning. So I will jump back on again Monday morning, do another quick live video, and announce the winner for you guys. So everyone have a great weekend. When you paint these, if you do them this weekend or later, make sure you share them with me. So you can either come back to this video and post them under the comments here, or you can share them to my page and tag The Social Easel in it. So let me know. I love to get to see them, and you can show me kind of the, the process of even you and the kids painting as well. So it's always fun to see those pictures. So enjoy it. I can't wait to see them, and I will see you guys back here on Monday.
