Christie Renee Hawkins shows how to add white drop-shadow highlights to black hand-lettered paint using a white paint pen. Place the highlight on the left side of each letter, overlapping the black edge if you want. The pen may splatter in canvas grooves, which you can leave as texture or cover with black.
Okay, our black paint has dried on all the lettering, so now I'm going to come in and add my white as my highlight, kind of like a drop shadow. We're going to go on the left of every side of the letter, and you can go over top of the black some if you want to, or you can go next to it. And then if I want it thicker, I'm just going to fill that in. Every once in a while, your paint pen may do a little splatter if it catches the— you can see that catching the groove of the canvas. You can go back and cover that up if you want to. A lot of the times I just kind of leave the little bit of speckles in there, but if that bothers you, you can go back with your black paint pen again and just touch that up. Just a fun way to accent your lettering on your art.
