LAST LIVE PAINTING?!?! || The Social Easel

In this live stream, Christie Renee Hawkins hosts her final live paint night before the doors close on the Pumpkin Palette Paint Party. She demonstrates her loose, abstract painting style using palette knives, angled brushes, heavy gel medium, and vibrant color mixes while creating a vase of fall foliage and a rooster. Throughout the session she answers viewer questions, shares tips on brush loading, vine and leaf creation, and color mixing (e.g., red + green to neutralize). Christie promotes a $20 online workshop running August 1‑9, co‑hosted with Heidi, which includes three teaching sessions on painting techniques and three on running paint parties. She highlights the private Facebook group of over 300 women, the benefits of membership (access to a library of 40+ paintings, future workshops, and ongoing support), and provides logistical details about sign‑up links, email confirmations, and how participants can access recordings. The stream blends instructional content, community building, and marketing, emphasizing a philosophy of “messy, fun, trust the process” and encouraging beginners to practice and persist.

Hey guys, how's everybody doing tonight? It is Christie with The Social Easel, and I am here for my very last live paint night this week before we close doors to our Pumpkin Palette Paint Party. So if you have not heard about this yet, you haven't been on Facebook this week because Heidi and I have been telling you guys all about it, and we are so thrilled and and so excited to get to teach this with you guys. So if you're not familiar with what I'm talking about, the painting right above me is what we're getting ready to teach, but the doors close tonight. So I came on to paint with you guys. I'm going to show you a little painting, some techniques, some tips and tricks that I use for my leaves and my vines like I do in this painting. So you guys hop on and watch me and hopefully you'll learn something and let me know if you have any questions about anything. Heidi is on here. Hey Heidi. So, um, this is just crazy. So Heidi and I partnered together on this and we're so excited about it. She's going to teach you the paint party side. I'm going to teach you the painting side and we have over 300 women in our group right now. Doing this paint party. So it is going to be a party. Um, we have, um, so many fun women in there. We're super excited. Everyone's in the group introducing themselves. So you will get to be a part of this private Facebook group, a part of this party. I've already gone in there and shown the ladies how to do the palette boards, answered some questions that they had about that, did a couple lives with them, went to Lowe's and showed them exactly what to get. So all those things that you want to know about building a palette board. All that's inside the party, and you get all of this for $20. So Heidi and I are gonna break this painting down, or I should say I'm gonna break the painting down into 3 sessions. Heidi is gonna break her teaching down into 3 sessions, and we're gonna take turns going back and forth each day in the group from August 1st. All the, all the fun starts on August 1st, so we're getting people into the group right now, and then we start teaching August 1st. August 1st through the 9th. So yeah, Heidi said be a part of the party. Thank you, June. She said love it. So if you missed earlier, this little rooster back here, I love him. Do you guys want to see him up close? He's so cute. And it was so much fun to paint because it's very rare that I get an hour uninterrupted. Where I can just paint and I don't have to answer anybody's questions. I turned off my phone so I wouldn't get distracted by any emails or any stuff I had to do, and I just painted and I had fun and I didn't worry about anything. I just painted for fun. And sometimes when you're the art teacher, you don't always get to do that. So today I got to do that and and painted the rooster over here. Ashley said, "It's a great day. So worth it." Thank you, Ashley. She's in the party. Carol said, "I wanted to, but if I—" Carol, that comment broke up, so type it again and let me know what you meant there, if you had any questions. So do you guys want to see the rooster? I'm gonna, I'm gonna show you a little up close of him. He's actually still not dry. Can you see that okay? You guys good? Okay, so I'm gonna kind of show you up close. Look at all the fun, crazy texture in this painting. So if you haven't painted with me before, or maybe you're new to the Social Easel and you don't know my style yet, it's very loose. It leans towards the abstract. I am not a realist by any means. Glynnis, I actually used both. And so to answer her question, what I was going to tell you guys is I did that whole painting with a palette knife and an angled brush. Lots of heavy gel medium and thick paints. So these were some of the paints, and I'm not an affiliate for Michaels. I'm just telling you about these, but Artist's Loft. I think they even have them on sale this week. It was buy 2 get 1 free, which isn't their best sale, but it was still pretty good. And they also have— and I actually love this. I bought it last time I was there. And I love it because the other gel medium I was using is in a jar and you have to scoop it out. This is a gloss gel medium and I can just squirt it into all my colors and it makes it much easier. So anyways, super thick paint, so much fun to paint that way. And anyways, very excited about him. So if that's something you want to learn how to do, make sure you get on my waitlist for when the doors open for my membership because we open doors again on September 15th. and this is one of the August paintings for my group. And when you become a member, you get access to everything I've done prior to you joining. So we have a library of over 40 paintings that you'll have immediate access to, and this guy will be one of them. I think he's a little crooked, but I'm gonna, I'm gonna leave him be. Thank you guys, I'm glad you like him. Ashley said, and they have 35% off. Yeah, they had a couple good sales going on. They had 2-pack of canvases buy one get one free, also lots of different sizes. So I know some of my members went and bought the 10 by 20s because we did a 3-panel 10 by 20 painting last week. I got my Chick-fil-A tonight, a little caffeine to make it through the rest of the day. All right, you guys want to paint? So I am— I'm gonna start with a small round, and this is like a number 1. Move you guys in a little bit closer. Glenn, this is a gloss gel medium. I know it's backwards. I'm gonna see if Facebook will let me flip you guys the right way. It's been broken. It still doesn't work. I wonder when they're ever gonna fix that. It's almost been a month. So we used to be able to hit this button when we go live and it would flip, which means you could read things the right way instead of it being backwards. So anyways, that's— you can get gel medium in all kinds of different brands. It doesn't have to be that. Okay, so I'm gonna show you guys some tips and tricks here. First, we're just gonna do just a quick little vase to put some fall flowers in so that I can show you how to do some vines and stuff coming out of it. No, Ashley, you didn't used to have to do it before you went live. You used to be able to do it whenever, but that may have been something they changed. So I'll check it out. I'll try live next time. So I'm just using an angled brush right now, and this is just leftover paint. Where's my little thing? Here we go. This is just leftover paint from my rooster this morning, and we're just going to do a real simple Because this isn't going to be a full painting, I'm not going to mess with the background or anything here. Just fill this in. And again, nothing I do is super precise or perfect. I kind of like the, the loose messy style a little bit more. Hello Elizabeth from Louisiana. So if you guys are having fun watching this, let your friends know. Hit that share button right below while you're watching and they can jump on here. Put a little bit more down here. So this is just a fun little mixture. This paint is— I love this color— Plum Suede by DecoArt. Most of what I use is by DecoArt. And then I think— I think this is what I used today. This is Cloudless. Apple Barrel. You can get that at Walmart. Ashley said she needs to loosen up her style. Paint with me for a little bit. Hopefully I'll loosen you up. I'm just gonna put some bright— let's add a little bit of that bright teal in there too. So I like these fun, crazy mixtures of colors. Maybe a little burgundy. Down on the bottom. So I'm gonna switch palettes now. So this is what— can you guys see this if I turn you? I don't want to mess that up. See all this paint everywhere? That's what my workstation looks like when I actually get to create and be messy. And then of course, immediately, I'm always, always rushed for time. Chronically running late because I try to squeeze in one more thing before I have to go. Does anyone else do that, or are you guys the opposite of me and always 10 minutes early? That is not me. Never will be. Hey, Sandy. Laura, the rooster is in my membership. That's gonna be one of our August paintings, and I open the doors to my membership again in September, and you will get that. The rooster will be part of the membership and available to you. If you join. So if you go to my website, it's thesocial easel onlinepaintstudio.com, and then you go to the Paint With Me tab, or it'll scroll across, you can hit join the waitlist. You get a free tutorial from me for joining the waitlist, and you'll also be the first to know as soon as videos start going out and we start opening the doors. So whenever I'm doing like a bouquet, I like to start just with some greenery. And I don't do super heavy here because I know I'm gonna cover this up with some other stuff. So we're just gonna make it nice and messy right here. I get a little darker there. Okay, so let's say we'll add some little vines in here. So my tip for doing vines, first of all, get the right brush. You want a small round, so a number 1 or even a liner if you really want intricate little curls. And here's my tip: make sure you put plenty of paint in there. This is what— and I'm gonna get close to you for a minute— This is what a lot of people do because they're thinking they want to paint small so they don't need a lot of paint. So they'll literally get— if I can get the camera up right— they'll just get a tiny dab of paint on there. So let me show you what happens when you do that, when you don't have enough paint in your brush and you try to complete a swirl. Can you guys see that? It's all broken up. You don't have enough paint in your brush because these are tiny little bristles, so they don't hold very much. So if you just get a dab on there and you try to, you know, get it to finish, it starts just kind of fanning out like that at the end. But if you really load it up, get plenty of paint on there, and then do it Let's do one kind of coming out. I'll kind of overlap those a little bit. So just kind of going over. I don't want to put too much pressure down. Maybe have another one come over here. So you still are going to— it's going to fan out a little bit because it's hard to get the full length of something like that. Again, because these are little itty-bitty brushes, so they don't hold a ton of paint. But see how much stronger that is at the base? And then you can come back and fill in the ends. Let's fill these in. Maybe we'll do this one with a couple That didn't, that didn't look right. That wasn't what I wanted it to be. We'll cover that one up because I don't like him. So I'm gonna cover flowers over all of these, but I wanted to show you guys— see, like that, these little loop-de-loos kind of coming out. So you want to have plenty of paint in there with your small brush when you do that. Ashley said there's a good tribe watching here. Oh, awesome. I'm glad you guys are on here. Hey, Tamra. We got a lot of people watching tonight. Okay, so that's kind of giving you some of those, and then I've got some like mustard color here. So if you like look up here, see, I've got these like highlights in there. Once you get your green on, you can come in with some yellow with that and add— I want some brighter yellow, I think— add a little touch of yellow highlights in here. So I just do it here and there. I don't Now I'm just gonna start filling in some greenery. Now I'm gonna get messy a little bit. Some people can handle my messiness here in the middle, and some people it makes nervous that I'm doing this, but I want there to be some greenery behind here, and I know it looks crazy right now. This is when— I'm gonna scoot you guys back a little. This is when I tell my students to just trust the process. I promise you it'll all come together. Sometimes along the way it looks like a hot mess, so just know that I know that, but I have an end game. Okay, so sometimes we can take a hot mess and we can turn it into something really pretty. All right, so I do this in my membership and I do it when I teach live. We'll get through a step and everyone's like, my painting's so ugly, and I'm like, so is mine, look at it. It's not done yet. Sometimes my paintings don't come together until like the last 5 minutes. So trust the process. That's what makes it fun, right? You don't know what's gonna happen. Hey Pam. Hey Elizabeth. Thank you so much, Pam. Well, I have fun doing it. You know what I want to add in here? Okay, first let me show you. I think this is probably one of my new favorite colors. This is deep magenta. I used this in my rooster, in case you guys missed the rooster. There he is. Let's see, so I want some of that color. Let's grab— that one's not open yet. Hey, Rachel! Get a little bit of red here. But what I was gonna say, I get sidetracked very easily too. I'm gonna show you guys one of my tribe members did a painting, her own painting, and I was— I like fell in love with it. And I was like, can I use that as inspiration? Because it's so awesome. And she did this amazing painting that had cotton and fall-colored flowers in it, and it was so pretty. So I'm gonna put a couple cotton balls— cotton stems in here also, and we're just going to fill this thing up. It is similar to the wine color, but it's a lot brighter. Can you see that? Is this not a fun palette or what? By the way, I reuse my palettes all the time. All right, what am I doing? I want brown. I want brown next to my tan. So some of you guys may have seen my cotton painting before. It's actually behind here. So we're going to use some of this as inspiration and mix some of these cotton stems in here. And the Cotton Stems painting is part of the membership too. So I've already got a lot of thick white here left over from my rooster earlier today. I'm gonna add a little bit more to that, and I'm gonna grab my angled brush here. And I may have to stick these down low since I did not paint a background on here. I'm gonna get a little bit of color with this. I have some like metallic leftover. So when I say a lot of paint, can you guys see how much paint that is? I really load my brushes up with a lot of paint. So I'm just gonna come in and just make these messy Little blobs again. Look at this. Have fun with it. It's so fun to get a lot of paint on your brush. Messy little circular-like blobs. Maybe I'll do one more here. And this is how I start building my paintings. I'm gonna go straight from that since I've already got my angled brush. I really like using the angled brush when I do flowers and stuff like this. Because they're just really— they scoop up the thick paint really well. Let's have this one open maybe just a little bit here. Let's give it a little center inside. Alright, I got a quiz for you, a little pop-up pop question. What color would I mix with red if I wanted to make it darker in the center of this red flower? If you know your color wheel, you might be able to get this right. If you're in my tribe, you better know the answer to this. Make sure— Deborah, I agree, painting is so relaxing. Hey, Anne! It's not purple. You could, you could use purple, but what if you're looking at the color wheel, what color would I use to tone down red? What would give it a neutral? I'm still waiting on the right answer. Diane is the winner, so it's green. So look at what I'm doing here. Can you guys see this? I think I'm gonna do a lesson on color mixing next week because I'm kind of obsessed with color mixing. So why would I do red and green together? Because they're opposite on the color wheel. So when you add opposites to each other, it gives you a neutral tone. So it gives me a toned-down version. So basically I can make like a burgundy out of of green and red. See this like plum color that I'm getting from that? And then watch what happens here. So I want that to kind of be the center. It's going to be darker in the middle there, and I'm only putting a little bit there because I'm going to pull some of the bright red back on top of it. Let's add another one up here. And I don't really know what kind of flowers these are. They're crispy, messy flowers. So I'm just kind of swishing that around. See how quickly I'm moving that brush? Let's add— I've got this really pretty gold over here too. This is that, that new one. That I really like. So I know I want to leave some room for some yellow. If you hear a squeaking noise, one of my dogs has a dog toy right behind us. So maybe like that. What do I want to put in the middle? I think I want to put maybe a gold one in the middle. Maybe I'll have a little bit of this peeking out here. Okay, just for fun. I want some of that bright color down there. All right, so now I'm going to go back to my green and red, and the more you mix of one color versus the other, you're gonna get all kinds of shades. You could take red and green and probably make 10 different colors out of it. So this is a really good thing for you to practice at home, even if you've never painted before. Grab a mixed media pad and just start color mixing and see what colors you can make, because it's so much fun. So much fun. Okay, thank you. Renee said, ladies, I couldn't paint when I started. I've learned so much. Thank Thank you so much, Renee. Renee has done awesome inside the group. It's very exciting to see the progress that these ladies are making, and some of them are even selling and teaching now. It's just crazy pants. And most of them literally have never painted before. So I don't tell you that to brag on me, but I tell you that because I want you to believe in yourself. And just because you've never done something before doesn't mean you can't do it. And the only way to get better at something is to keep doing it. What was that quote I just shared on Instagram? If you're not following me on Instagram, make sure you're following me on Instagram. Hold on, I put it in my story. Okay, two things. One, from James Wedmore— I'm just gonna give you guys some truth today too— don't rob the world of your gifts. Use your talents to create connection, to inspire others to share theirs. And to make an impact on humanity for the better. Absolutely agree with this. And God gave us all gifts, um, and so he meant for us to use them. And he gifted me with artistic ability, and I love it, and I love teaching others. So whatever your gift is, go out there and use it. What's my next one? Hang on. Aha, this one. This is, uh, Rachel Hollis: be humble enough to suck for as long as it takes to become better. Does that make sense? You have to— it all starts somewhere. Okay, you're gonna learn something along the way. You just have to allow yourself to make the mistakes to get better. We don't just pick up something. Okay, so let me use this for instance. You guys may not know this about me. I played darts with my husband probably about 3 nights a week. We put— we redid our basement and put a dartboard down there about a year ago, and prior to that, I have never thrown a dart in my life, and I was terrible. I was terrible at the beginning, and we just kept playing and kept playing, and I don't really like to lose. I do a lot, But I can actually beat my husband now, and I'm pretty good at darts now. And so when I used to beat him maybe like once a month, now it's more like once a week. I beat him twice this week. So let yourself practice. Don't tell yourself that you have to be perfect at the very beginning. Have fun. Art is supposed to be fun. So I want to add some yellow crazies in here too. I'm switching to the palette knife for this one, and all of this was leftover paint that I had this morning from painting my rooster. Let's add maybe a big one here in the center. Don't worry, I know I haven't shown you the, the cotton yet. I didn't forget about it. Sometimes I do this while I'm painting. I kind of want to get my things in place and then I come back to them. Thank you, Deanne. Let's have this one go sideways. Oh, I got a little green on there. I don't want green in my flower. We could turn these into sunflowers. I'm going back to my angled brush, and I want a little bit of like an orangey— some picking up some of my red just to change the color of this just a little bit. Maybe do a little accent some petals coming up here. And I kind of like it when they mix together with the colors behind them. And you can come back— so I know all this is overlapping right now— decide which one you want in front, and then we'll come back and pull those in the front. Patty, I usually don't keep it from drying because I put so much gel medium in this. I and I was using thicker paint, it will, it will stay wet for a few hours. If you're just using craft paint, it will not. You can try covering it. I never do with my craft paint. Let's add in some of our stems here. Maybe I'll have a couple kind of poke up. We can add some different little berries or something on there. So this is how I do my cotton. We kind of make like these little, like, leaf claw shapes, like 3 prongs on here. I think I want this cotton to be on top, so I'm actually going to pull this back on top again and make that other yellow flower— make this one go back behind. Maybe the same thing here. This is getting kind of lost. So again, you guys are getting to see me kind of compose as I go. I don't have this painting all planned out. We also want some leaves up here. So my leaves are really basic. I may cover this up or have that sticking out behind. Kind of a curved shape and then a curved shape. I call them like parentheses. Kind of think of a parenthesis. Let's add another one here. We don't have enough greenery coming out the top. I need some more green up here. And again, this is messy and loose. Maybe have this one kind of come down lower here. And I've got this dark green, and I'll pick up a little bit of like mustard color with it. Use the yellow as a highlight. Maybe add another one over here. I'm going to cover that up. I want a big leaf here instead. So what I want you guys to get used to is being messy, having fun. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. So I tell my girls all the time, everything in painting can be covered up. If you do something that you hate in this painting, you can cover it up just like you're seeing me do right now. I'm changing things up as I go. Just because you painted something on there doesn't mean it's done. You can always go back and change it, and especially if you are working with craft paints, they dry so fast that you don't even have to wait very long. So anyways, this kind of gives you a glimpse of of kind of how I do the vines and the leaves and stuff in our pumpkins. But the door is closed tonight at midnight for that pumpkin palette. So make sure— Heidi already posted the link. Make sure you get signed up if you want to learn how to paint that painting up above, how to build your own palette boards, which then you can use again and again in whatever project you want, and how to do your very own paint parties. Heidi's going to fill you in on all the tips for that. So we make a great little partnership. So I like doing the painting, she likes doing the teaching, and so it was kind of perfect for us that we ended up doing this. I want that cotton stand out a little bit more. I may even— I'm gonna grab a little bit of light blue. I don't know if you guys can see that. I'm going to tone that down a little bit, but a little bit of that light blue just to give that cotton some color instead of it just being pure white. Hey, you— if you haven't heard of it, Heidi and I are doing an online workshop And it's only $20. Doors close tonight. So this is your last chance to sign up for it. Heidi put the link in the comments. And yeah, so I'm going to teach you how to do that, and you get full license if you want to do your own paint parties with it. You have my permission to do so. And yeah, Heidi's going to give you all the tips and tricks on how to have a successful paint party business. And maybe if you've never done one before, so if you're brand new and the thought of doing paint parties scares you, she's gonna walk you through all of that. And if you've never painted before, that's okay too. I'm gonna show you how to paint. So we're gonna have a lot of fun in there. It's only $20, which is a steal. I charge $45 per class to do my palette paint nights. So this is a great deal. For you guys to get in on. So I think I am gonna leave that for now. We've got it pretty abstract. I want to get the point on here. So I'm using this angled brush to kind of get a nice point on here, and this has a little bit of red in it, which is fine, right? Because now it's just gonna tone down my green. I gotta fix this leaf. It's bothering me. Let's tone this down just a little bit. What color? I think I'm gonna put— I always think I'm done and then I change my mind. I'm gonna add a little yellow. Centers in those magenta ones. And I think I'm going to do a little brown and wine color. This one's opening up a little, so I'm actually going to pull the leaves back over that. Same here. So I put those centers on, and then I come back with my yellow, and I'll just kind of pull that on top again, kind of flare that out. You could make them a little more petal shape if you wanted. This one, this yellow one's gonna go behind. I need to just get a little bit more white. Deanne signed up earlier today. Awesome. Sorry if I'm missing some of your questions. Sometimes I get wrapped up in the painting. Oh yeah, that was a question. If you are going to be gone and you're worried that you have to be here for the painting, you do not. So you'll still have access to that group and to the painting. Even if you're gone, all you have to do is go back into the group to get access to that. This cotton ball is driving me crazy here. He needs to be bigger, and then I need to pull the brown back over top again. That one's behind. Let's pull this one a little bit on top again. So that's my messy little flower vase for you guys tonight. Let's give it a little table here to sit on in my new favorite color. I've just got this paint I need to use up anyways, right? So I'm just going to give it a crazy messy bottom down here. I love this color. Scooping. Some red in there with it. So that's your, that's your fast fall flower vase for today. Glad you guys like it. It's a little crazy and messy, but that's alright. If you had fun painting with me and you want to do more, sign up for the pumpkin class. By the way, the best thing about this, I'm going to show you. This is my workstation. See this little guy right here? That is where I put the camera. So when I'm filming, the camera's like this and you get an aerial view. So you're not having to dodge or look over my shoulder or anything like that. You get an aerial view, close-up. You're going to know exactly what to do, exactly how to do the brush strokes. And I'm going to be painting it live inside the group, which means If you do catch me live, you can ask me questions while I'm painting. If you don't catch me live, you can go back, you can still ask me questions, tag me in it, and I'll come back and answer them. So you kind of get me as your personal art teacher during this span of time to help you, and if you're stuck on something, to kind of tell you how to fix it, all that good stuff. So, um, Jesse, it starts on August 1st, um, and it runs— our teaching is from August 1st to August 9th, and sign-up ends tonight at midnight. So it's $20 for a workshop on learning how to do the palette, how to build it, how to paint it, and Heidi's gonna teach you how to do a paint party. So all that good stuff. Teaching begins August 1st. We're getting everybody into the group. We have over 300 women in there with us so far. We're so excited and excited to see what you guys can do with this painting this fall. Whether it be for yourself just to hang in your home or for you to make some money for the holidays. Because if you're a creative, you need to get out there and be creating in the fall because this is the best time for our business. People love pumpkins, they love sunflowers, and it's a good time to be selling them and booking those parties for it. So let me know if you guys have any other questions, and then I'm gonna hop off here. So hopefully that answered them all for you. Yes, as soon as we get off here, if you don't see the info in the links, Lianne, I don't know if I'm saying that right, Leanne, Lianne, all the information is in a link that Heidi put for you. Okay, so there's a link when you click on it, it'll tell you everything you get in the workshop and you'll get signed up for it. When you get signed up, you will get an email that comes automatically from Heidi. It will not say from The Social Easel, so don't let that confuse you guys. It'll come from Heidi, it'll go to your email. Here's what happens with emails. We send them to whatever address you put in there automatically. So this isn't something that we manually do. We have our computers do all that for us. It is sent to whatever email address you put in. So make sure you typed it right, number one. If you know you did and you still don't see it, check your spam folder and check your promotions folder. Some emails sort things differently, but check to see where all that, like all the sales, all the, like, you know, your Target ad, whatever, all that stuff. Sometimes we get thrown in that mix and you'll miss our messages. So it comes from Heidi at Texas Heart and Soul is where your email is going to come from. That'll have the link. To the private Facebook group, and that's where the party is. So that is it. What is the wine color you were using? Deep magenta, Artist Loft. This is from Michaels. All right, girls, I'm hopping off for the night, and I will see you guys next week. Bye!
