Let's Paint a Rock today!

Christie Renee Hawkins walks through painting a miniature beach scene on a rock with craft paints and small brushes. She covers mixing colors for sky, ocean, and sand, then optional finishes like gloss sealer or glitter. The idea is to hide your painted rocks for others to find.

Hey everybody, we are jumping on for a quick Facebook Live. This is Christie Hawkins, I'm the owner of The Social Easel, and I have you aimed down here because we are going to do a little rock painting today. So I'm gonna give you guys a second to jump on here. I've got some leftover paint. I just finished teaching this palm tree painting in my, um, Inner Tribe, which is my VIP membership, and I had some leftover paint. So I talked to the girls in the group and decided it would be fun to jump on here and do a quick beach version of this painting. Not the full painting, but a little mini version of a beach painting on a rock. So how many of you have done rock painting before? I literally just went and found this in my backyard. I need to get some from out on our land, so I have a little bit more variety, but I kind of love this shape. And you could even— this one's got a flat bottom on it, so you could even set it up and do that. But it's really fun. Um, to do rock paintings and then hide them all over. Like, if you have kids or grandkids, take them out, do some rock painting. I'm just going to use regular craft paint, nothing fancy. If you want to seal it, you can, and I'll show you that in this video. Or you can just do some rock painting and then go out and hide them. And as people are walking, maybe on trails, um, out in nature, wherever, um, they might find your rock. I'm just going to bring them a little bit of joy and happiness that day. If you guys haven't already, accept permissions from StreamYard as well, and then I can see your name in the comments here. I love it. Someone said, we— I love rock painting, um, we paint and hide the rocks. We've been doing it for 2 years now. I love it, it's so fun. Hey Lynn, my day is going good so far. Cindy loves painting rocks. So, um, this painting in the background that you're seeing, I just taught this to, um, my private membership group. And if that is something that you're interested in and you want to become a part of the group, um, and be a tribe sister with us, um, you can just text the word waitlist to my phone number. Just text the word waitlist to 417-217-7044, and, um, we are building a waitlist for when we open the doors to new members. So I only open a few times a year, but if you guys are interested in being a part of that and having me as your personal, um, art teacher where you get 3 lessons with me per month in our private Facebook group, be sure to text the the word waitlist to that phone number there. And this is one of the paintings that we did. So I'm gonna prop this up a little because I don't want to get paint on it. This is about as zoomed in as I can get you, so I'm sure I'll be having paint all over me by the end of this. Speaking of, I better throw my apron on. Really quick. Bonnie said, I'm going to see the grandkids in Texas. What do you think my son-in-law would think if I packed a bunch of rocks from— hey, I think it would be fun, and then it's even cooler because it came from your state. Oh, how fun! See, Lynn has been in two rock painting groups for 4 years now. Very fun. All right, so we're just going to jump right into it. Again, you don't need anything fancy here. I just grabbed some craft paints. You can use DecoArt or whatever brand you want to. I've just got some different colors here, again, leftover from that painting that I just showed you, and we're just going to start with the background. I'm going to use smaller brushes since I'm painting on a much smaller surface. So I'm just going to start with some white and a little bit of this blue, and I'm going to kind of make like a baby blue color here for our sky. You know, another fun thing I thought about— I just, I can't remember who I saw it from. I actually think it was Reese Witherspoon. I can't remember what she was doing. She had painted seashells with all these different patterns, and they were so pretty, and I thought seashells would be a fun thing to do as a fun little project. Another thing I have left over from Florida that I could do is sand dollars. I remember when I was a kid and we used to get to go to Florida, not very much, but a few times when I was little, and it was my favorite thing to go in those souvenir shops and buy one of the painted sand dollars. Anybody else like doing that? But I thought it'd be fun to maybe paint like a little Florida sunset. On a sand dollar with you guys too. Yeah, just something fun to use up this leftover paint. So I'm gonna let that be my sky. I may even come up a little, we'll see. I don't want it to take up our whole rock here, so I'm just getting some of the darker blue Nothing too fancy so far. Yep, these are just craft paints. Then we're going to get some of this Ocean Breeze color. I love this color. I'm going to pick up some more of that blue with it because I want there to kind of be a transition there. Maybe add some white to this, make it a little bit lighter. So if you guys missed the beginning, I'm going to show you what kind of like our inspiration piece is for this. This is what I just painted with my group, and we're gonna do like a mini little beach scene on our rock today. And if you guys are loving this, make sure you hit the share button, let me know you shared it. Someone's saying, we paint seashells also. Sometimes I take the little scraps of wood and paint inspiring words and hide those also. The kids love it. That's a good idea. Yeah, we're getting ready to go to the beach on Monday, so So hopefully I can collect some new seashells. I did not do anything to the rock prior to painting it other than rinsing it off. I didn't even use soap. I just rinsed it and dried it, and that's it. Thank you for sharing, Marshana. Lori said, my grandson and I paint rocks. He just picks a rock and paints something on it. And he laughs at me because I pick a rock, turn it and turn it and turn it, looking at the different angles. He asks me what I'm going to do, and I'm telling him I'm waiting for the rock to tell me what's inside it. That's a fun little story though. Awesome. Tammy's leaving to go to Florida tomorrow. All right, let me grab We're going to do the sand color now. And all you need to do the sand color is just any kind of brown paint and white. So you can see I've got just some brown paint here, and I'm just going to mix a little white with that until I get the color of sand that I want. And these do not need to be solid colors all the way across. You want some variation in there. Maybe I'm gonna go a little darker, a little bit over here. That's awesome. She puts a Bible verse reference on the back of them and calls them gospel rocks. That's a fun idea, Nancy. Sharon paints ladybugs on the right-shaped rocks and leaves them around the neighborhood. See, it's just fun. It just brings a little bit of joy. People. You never know how something that simple can just brighten someone's day. Okay, so I'm just going to wipe off some of this. I'm going to grab some more of my ocean color here, maybe a little bit of white with it, and just kind of lightly go back over that brown, just add some little streaks in there. And then I'm just gonna— and I'm just using an angled brush for this, you guys. I'm not even switching paintbrushes right now. So all I've done so far is just blend back and forth, just a very, very simple kind of beach scene. Nothing too extravagant. Anyone can do this. This is fun for kids. Let's just have some little waves crashing down here. I'm just kind of pouncing that brush on there. What do you guys think so far? I kind of like the way It's kind of going around the edge like that and rounds it off. I think this will be really pretty sitting out somewhere for someone to find. I need to paint these edges over here just a little bit. I'm not going to wrap it around all the way today while I'm on here with you guys, just so I'm not having to keep flipping it back and forth. But you kind of get a general idea of what I'm doing here. All right, let me know in the comments if you like it so far. And then we're going to add a little palm tree on here. I think I'm going to have it just one little palm tree kind of come up around the edge right here. Now I need a tiny little brush for this. I've just got a little liner brush here. If you guys are ever wanting to know, like, the brushes and stuff that I use, you can, um, also just type the word Amazon. These are keywords that you can text me. So waitlist if you want more information about my membership, or you can text the word Amazon and it will give you a link to my Amazon store where, like, all the brushes and stuff that I use, they're all there for you. All right, I'm gonna get a little bit more black on here, and we're going to do a super dainty little palm tree. Well, maybe two, because I did that little line there. So when you're using a thin brush, you still want to make sure you have plenty of paint in it. But you're just not pressing down super hard. Liz, you will need to text the word Amazon to that phone number that I listed. So putting it here in the comments will not send you the link. If you text it to that number, you'll get a link to my Amazon store. And then I have a whole blog on palm trees, by the way, if you want to learn how to paint. A palm tree. We're going to make this one super simple, but I kind of make like a little almost like star firework shape there. And that phone number to text is also in the description of this Facebook Live, so if you missed the little banner that had it, you can go back to that. So we're going to start like this. And then we're just going to pull down, try to hold this a little bit closer. Little itty bitty little lines. And I think I'm just going to leave this kind of like a silhouette of the palm tree instead of adding the greens and yellows to it. What do you guys think? Remind anyone of Florida? Awesome, Robbie. Melissa, I'm assuming, said she hasn't been— she's been wanting to paint a rock forever, just hasn't found the time. This is going to inspire her. I hope so. Think of all the love and joy we can spread by adding these. Rocks out in the world. I don't think God will mind just one bit that we're going to take his creation and add a little piece of art to it, because he made us all creative to begin with. I think it makes him happy to see how we can take what he's given us and spread a little joy with it. You know what, that kind of looks like two palm trees together, so I'm just going to pull another line over here. Maybe we have to kind of overlap in a little bit there. We can just make it whatever we want. Thank you, Beth. We just got those done. Me and the girls went and got our nails done yesterday for Florida. I've always had flat, um, square nails. I decided to do the almond, something fun for Florida. But what I want you guys to see with this too is you don't need a ton of fancy detail It's just a fun little surprise that someone's going to find somewhere. I'm liking it. All right, what do you guys think? I think we're done. Just a fun little rock. I love the shape of this one. I think I'm gonna tuck it somewhere and just leave it, maybe propped up next to a little tree. Someone's gonna find it. And hopefully it's going to brighten their day. You could do whatever on the back. I could paint, just carry the picture around on the back, or I could put a little message back here. Whatever you want. And another thing you could use for that, I was actually going to show you guys this. These are the Arteza. I've been, I've been saying Arteza this whole time. It's Arteza. If you don't want to do these palms with a brush, look, I can just do this with a paint pen. You guys have these paint pens yet? They're awesome. Can add those lines with the paint pen on there too. If you're a little shaky with a brush, that's a great alternative. And they come in all different colors. Also great for kids. If you wanted to seal this, because I know someone's going to ask that, you could do DecoArt. This is DecoPodge Gloss. It's a glue sealer finish. It comes in different finishes. This one's gloss. So I could cover this whole thing in gloss once it's completely dry. Another thing you could do— this is brush-on glitter. I could cover the whole thing in this too, and it would add another protective kind of coating for that and add some glitter to it. I think maybe— what do you guys think? Should I put a little? Some people love glitter, and some people are anti-glitter. What if we put a little glitter in the ocean? I'm not gonna paint the whole thing in it, but what if we did some little glitter in the ocean there? What do you guys think? I'm gonna wait for your votes. Glitter, no glitter, all you guys are deciding. I'm just gonna add a little reflection lines in here. Yay, I got some glitter lovers! I love glitter. Now I'm just gonna use this right out of the bottle because I don't want to waste it and put it on my palette because I'm barely going to use anything. And this is my absolute favorite glitter. Um, it's been kind of hard to find, but it's called Craft Twinkles by DecoArt. But there are other brands. There's FolkArt and different, different ones that you can get. And maybe by adding the glitter to it, it'll capture someone's attention a little bit more too. Just only in the water. Oh, I think that was a fun idea. Oh, I love that. What do you guys think? Is it good? Okay, that's it. Just a fun little 20-minute lesson with you guys for the day. Hopefully inspires you to go spread some joy and happiness out there. Look at all this paint I have left. I could do about 20 rocks with that much paint. I got to do something else. All right, hope you guys had fun. We will be turning this into a blog post too, so if you missed it, you'll be able to check back for that in a few weeks.
