Adding A Custom Domain Name In Kajabi Using CloudFlare DNS Servers, SSL and Page Rules x 3 (2019)

Christina Haftman (creatingdigitalassets.com) demonstrates, via a screen-recorded Kajabi/Cloudflare walkthrough, how to replace a default mykajabi subdomain with a purchased custom domain using Cloudflare DNS, enable a Full SSL certificate, add the required CNAME pointing to endpoint.mykajabi.com, and create three Cloudflare Page Rules so all URL variants (with/without www, http/https) redirect to the canonical site. The tutorial uses a client site (retirementlifestyleplanning.com), shows changing GoDaddy name servers to Cloudflare’s, and includes testing and troubleshooting notes. The narrator notes the domain was newly purchased (Oct 1, 2019) and that propagation can take minutes to a day.

Hey there, it's Christina, president and founder of creatingdigitalassets.com I am a product creation consultant and a digital marketing strategist for Internet entrepreneurs. And I exclusively work with Kajabi. And in tonight's video I am setting up a new custom domain for one of my clients. So I thought that it would be a good opportunity to create a tutorial on how you can do this as well, because it's a very common question in our Kajabi group on Facebook. So here we go. Okay, so this is when, when you first get Kajabi, we really want like speed of implementation so you actually determine what your site settings are. But you'll have that mykajabi up in the domain name in the browser and that just enables it to be hosted on their servers and it be immediately available when you publish. So it'll be immediately on the Internet. And some people leave it that way or leave it that way for a little while. But best practice to be professional is to self brand it. Like sometimes people leave it like that during their trial, during their 28 day trial. But anyway, this is what you want to do once you choose a custom domain name. What I mean by that is when you go to GoDaddy and you select, you know, a domain name that's available that you want to have for your website and then this is the process, the sequence of steps that you're going to take to remove the My Kajabi and have it be your domain name. Okay, so I'm going to show you over here. This is for a client and her domain name that she wants to have on her kajabi site is retirementlifestyleplanning.com Now I've already done the first step. Let me actually go back here to the Kajabi help. We're going to come here too in just a minute. And you want to go to learn.kajabi.com this is the online help portal. And just type in the search bar custom domain. And we're going to do how to set up your custom domain with Cloudflare because we're going to use Cloudflare to do this. Okay. Now it's going to give you all of these directions. Okay. We've already done these steps. So before I got the idea to do the video, we worked together earlier in the day we set up a Cloudflare account. It's free. You just want to go to cloudflare.com and create your account. It goes through here. What to do? But once you create Your account on cloudflare, you want to scan the DNS records for the domain name that you've purchased. So what we did is we scanned the DNS records for Retirement Lifestyle planning dot com, but there wasn't really any because she just bought it. So you can follow this tutorial to get through this section, but it's going to come to. Let me see, let me catch you up to where we are. Okay, This right here is where we change the name servers. So what we did is Cloudflare right here, Gave us a pair of name servers to use right here, Graham and Wally. So what we did, they told us to change those name servers. So we went into GoDaddy, which is the domain name registrar for the website that she has, and we changed them. So they were the default GoDaddy name servers. We went into DNS management, changed them, and as you can see here, now inside of GoDaddy, we have them pointing to Cloudflare. So we did that step and that's all you need to do over here. There they are changed on the godaddy side. And in Cloudflare, I'm already logged in. See, right here they're changed. Okay, so now what we want to do is get the certificate, this SLL certificate, we want a full one. Okay. And I guess it was as easy as that. So go back to the instructions. You want a full SSL certificate. That's what I just did right here. Oftentimes it would be flexible to full. That's what you just saw me change. Okay, and now we're going to add the custom domain into Kajabi. So if you want to follow along with the official Kajabi tutorial, this is where it is in Kajabi. You want to go under settings and then you want to go. I guess we can under settings and custom domain. And we did. The cloudflare DNS did this. We enabled this. We enabled the. We're going to do this. We're going to go to the next one and we need to change the cname record to endpoint.mykajabi.com okay, so before we do the SSL, which actually we did, we just did the SSL. I'm going to go back to the overview, back to the DNS and we want to make sure that the c name www.just try to show you this. I guess that was up here, CNAME, we want it to be endpoint.mykajabi.com so right here we're going to change this. Okay. And it's orange so you want to make sure that the server is activated and if it's not, it'll be gray, and if it is, it'll be orange. So I don't think we need to save that. It just. It took it right there. And now we want to. Since we did that, we can go back into Kajabi. I know I'm jumping around, but this is the C name www endpoint.mykajabi.com and add that record. It's already here. CName www.earthpoint.mykajabi.com it's added. So now we can go to the next step. And as you see, these steps are lighting up as we are completing them. And our SSL certificate is full. We enabled it, so we're going to click next. Okay. The SSL tab, it was flexible. We made it full, so everything's cool right there. Now what we want to do is we want to add the custom domain name right here and it's retirement. Lifestyle planning.com and we hit save. Oh, I have to type in the www. So you have to get the syntax right. It will error if you do not. You see here the example. So we have to put the WWW there. I'm glad I made the mistake so in case, you know, so you won't have to make the mistake. Okay, we're gonna have to wait a little bit. Sometimes this takes 10 minutes, sometimes it takes two hours, sometimes it takes a day to propagate. But right here it says the domain is pending Veri. Once verified, links in your site will automatically be using this and there's nothing more you need to do. So I'm going to save it and. Oh, there you go. This is what you want to look for. Okay, Everything is green. All these steps have been done. This turns green. The status is the DNS is set up. We have this full SSL certificate that's for security. That's like the HTTPs, the lock icon in the browser. So now we can type in HTTPs. Well, actually, we do have some page rules to do, but let's just do that first. Okay, so we did the DNS, we did the secure socket layer, and now we need to go to Page Rules because there's some things we need to do here. We need to create page rules. Now there's three of them and you want to just come down here. We've done all these steps. This is a custom domain and this is just some troubleshooting in case things aren't working. Like right here is where we're going to add Our page rules. And there's three of them now. What? These, what? The reason for the reason that we're doing these is that sometimes people type in our domain name without the www. They just start typing in the name of it. Sometimes people use the WWW prefix, sometimes people type in the HTTP and then sometimes people forget or they don't forget and they type in the HTTPs. So no matter what they type in the browser, it doesn't matter. These page rules are going to make sure that any of those of those, you know, addresses, website addresses will always resolve to her address. Okay? We'll always resolve to retirementlifestyleplanning.com no matter how it's typed into the browser. Any browser, desktop or mobile, doesn't matter. This is a global setting. Okay, so what we want to do is we're going to set up the first page rule and it's going to be that's your domain.com *. Now what I do to make sure that I have the right syntax is I copy it from here. I take it into Cloudflare and I put it here and then I just edit it. Retirement planning. I'm sorry, lifestyle planning. Lifestyle planning.com. make sure there's no typos. This is detailed. Okay, now this setting is a forwarding URL and it's going to be a 301 permanent redirect. And then we're going to actually enter this when we get to the destination. Okay, so it's forwarding URL 301 permanent redirect. You can find it in the drop down. It's a forwarding URL, it's a permanent redirection. The destination URL follows the syntax. But we just want to put her domain name in here. Right here. Now what I'm going to do is take retirement lifestyle planning. Just grab that, copy it, and I can paste it right in here between the dots, make sure that it's all accurate. Save and deploy. Okay, that's your first rule. Now we're going to go to the second page rule. Now the second page rule has to do with HTTP. So we're going to type in this and we're going to always use HTTPs, the secure one. Okay, copy that. We're going to put it here and then I'm going to put her domain name right here. Retirement lifestyle planning.com and this is always use HTTPs. Okay, save and deploy. Make sure I got that right. Okay. All right, that's your second page rule in Cloudflare. The final one, the third page rule is this is the third page role and it's another permanent redirect Forwarding URL from here. In the cloudflare. And this is what happens when somebody doesn't use the www. Retirement lifestyle planning.com and this is setting is going to be. This is alphabetical. So scroll down to forwarding URL status code is the permanent redirect. And then we have to grab the syntax of this. Okay, copy that, paste it here, edit it for her domain. Okay. Retirement lifestyle cleaning. Now we're all done with the page rules, but the order is not arbitrary. The order matters. And they should look like this. So the. They should look like this. The one without the WWW and then the HTTP and then the HTTPs. So we have to make sure they're in that order. So we want to have this one. Move it up. I think we use. How do I move it up? I guess see move this one down. Oh, you can just drag and drop them. Okay. So you can just pull it. I guess pull it up. Pull it down. You should be able to use these. Okay. You kind of have to use your cursor to pinch these. I thought you just click them to go up and down or you could drag and drop, but you really just have to grab this with your cursor and that grabs a hold of it and then move it where you want it and then it will show you the color where it's going to go. So that's how you do it. You see that you grab it, it'll change colors and you can move it and. But this is the way we want it. We want it without the www and then the HTTP and HTTPs just like it is in the kajabi instructions. And now you're all done. So we don't need these anymore. This is perfect. And now what we can do is to test it. Go into a new browser and type this in retirement lifestyle planning.com and there it is. This is her site. It's retirement reimagined. This is a template that we did today for all of her landing pages. And it's just the header and the footer. And then what will vary is what's in between. So this has her brand logo homepage. About page blog speaking. We're gonna have a speaker one sheet contact form. We did work on that. It's not completely done but I can show you. Actually the link is broken because we changed the my kajabi so I can't show you. I fixed that. And then this is her calendly and terms and privacy in the Footer, social icons, copyright, and. Yeah, so what she's doing is really exciting. It is. You know, how there's obviously retirement planning, and if you think about the. Think about that. The first thing that comes to mind is financial. And there's a lot of resources that are out there to help people with their, you know, planning financially and making their investments across and within asset classes. But what she's doing is she's addressing the emotional and the psychological transition. Her target audience are people who have had a very successful career professionally, probably college educated, maybe they had, you know, advanced degrees, but they've had like 20, 30 years or more in their jobs and their careers. Doctors, attorneys, architects, accountants, engineers, like, all different, that kind of a thing. And they're exiting, they're retiring. Some of them are not even retiring out of choice, but they're sort of forced out of it. Some of them are government employees with a pension. Some of them are partners, and there's like, a mandate in their contractual agreements to retire at a certain age. And they're used to. They're. They're. They're used to working, and that's where they get their identity. They're used to being productive, feeling important, being the expert. And, you know, they're transitioning, and it's sort of like an identity shift. Like, who am I now if I'm not doing this work? And so, you know, and then there's varying degrees of health, whether or not they're in good health or not, if they have children, if they don't, if they have family, if they don't, if they want to travel, if they don't. How much money they have is one part of it. But mostly it's more like the psychological change, like not having purposeful, meaningful work to do and shifting into, like, a new chapter of your life and deciding what kind of legacy do you want to leave? Do you want to write a book? Do you want to, like, productize your expertise into an online course? Do you want to do philanthropy? Do you want to mentor children or teenagers? Do you want to get more active in the church or in some kind of groups or organizations? Do you want to start a YouTube channel? I mean, there's all different kind of things that people would want to do before, you know, some of them are even, you know, thinking about legacy, thinking about their own, the. Their own, like, mortality, like how fragile and finite our lives are. So it's like the period of time where if you were going to do something, we're going to have to do it now. Right. Because don't know how much time you have left. So it's kind of like all of those things into one. Like that period of life comes with its own transition of challenges. And again, it's more like an identity shift because if you've been doing something for decades and you're really good at it and it immediately stops, that's kind of a shock. That's really shocking. And how do you plan for that? How do you plan for that? And that's what this is all about. Retirement lifestyle planning. So I'm really excited to be working with Tammy on this project and I wanted to show you, since we're brand new, it's completely just in its infancy. She doesn't really even have a social media presence for this brand. No email list. You know, it is really a fresh start. A brand new domain name she purchased. It's October 1, 2019. So it was a good opportunity to show you guys how to do the custom domain name with Kajabi and how to change the pair of DNS servers from whatever they are at your domain name registrar to the names that Cloudflare gives you. Getting your SSL certificate to keep your site secure so it won't get hacked. And doing those page rules so that every version of whatever someone types in the browser, it will always resolve to your website, no matter how they type it in. You see the lock here to the left adjacent to the domain name? That means it's secure. And that's always comforting to the site owner and website visitors that it's not like a questionable site. So it's very professional. Mykajabi. Mykajabi is not in the domain name anymore. This is like what we have here. And you see, like, if I expand it, the whole thing pops up. So we did the page rules, which means any, any, which, any way in which someone types in her domain name, it'll always resolve to this, to the homepage and that's that. I think I'm rambling a little bit, so I want to end this video. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments. If you're like, this is great, but I don't have time to do it. Or do you want to hire me to do it? It only takes about, as you can see, about probably no more than a half an hour because I did some of the steps before the video and I, I could do it for you and Kajabi again. Learn. No, not that. Where is it? Here it is. Not that. Did I close it out? I think I did this tutorial in written format. If you want to follow along, you want to go to learn.kajabi.com type in the search bar custom domain. And you want to use this one, you want to use this one with Cloudflare. Okay. And you can just follow this along with this video and you should be good to go. It's good to do it DIY so you can learn what this stuff is all about. But if you want to, if you want me to do it for you, just get in touch with me. I'll leave my email in the description box below. You can always comment and I'll be happy to help you if you have any additional questions. We do have a Facebook group for Kajabi for the user community and you can always ask in there because I know it's a global marketplace 24 7. I'm in Northern Virginia in the United States, so you might not reach me immediately. It might be a whole other time zone. So please do you know if you need something immediate, just hop in the group and somebody will help you. Okay. Thank you for watching. You can find more about me on this on my YouTube channel here and my website is creatingdigitalassets.com and this is Christina. Talk to you later. Bye.
