When your relationship with your dad was complicated

Christine J. Gold guides a meditation for people with complicated feelings about their fathers. You'll sit with anger, grief, and longing without trying to fix anything, and practice self-compassion. The practice includes breathwork, visualization, and permission to feel whatever comes up on Father's Day or any day.

If you're listening to this today on Father's Day or any day, I'm glad you're here. This meditation is for the complicated love, for everyone who finds this day brings up more than a card can hold. You don't need to explain why you're here. I already understand. Let's begin. Find a comfortable position, seated or lying down, whatever feels right for your body today. Let your hands rest gently or open or on your heart. Let your eyes close if that feels safe. Take one slow breath in through your nose and release it through your mouth. Again, in and out. One more, and this time on the exhale, let your body soften just a little. You don't have to hold hold anything right now. You can put it down. Feel the weight of your body wherever you are, the floor beneath your feet, the surface beneath you. You are held, you are safe, you are allowed to be here. Gently, without forcing anything, let him come to mind. Your father. Whatever version arrives first. The one who left. The one who stayed but wasn't present. The The one you loved, the one who hurt you, the one you barely knew, or the one you didn't know at all. The one you're still figuring out how to feel about. Whatever comes, let it come. We're not here to fix it today. We're here to hold hold it. Let's breathe together. In through the nose. 1, 2, 3, 4. Hold for 4, 3, 2, 1. Out through the mouth. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. And again, in through the nose, 4 counts. 1, 2, 3, 4. Hold. 4, 3, 2, 1. Out through the mouth. 1, 2 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. One more round. In through the nose for 4, hold for 4, and out through the mouth for 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. And this time, imagine releasing one thing you've been holding about this relationship. Just one thing. You don't have to name it, just let it move through you and out. Wonderful. I want to speak to the part of you that has been waiting, waiting to be chosen, waiting to be seen, waiting for an apology that may never have come, waiting to understand why. You can stop waiting now. Whatever his reasons were, his absence, his distance, his inability to show up, those were his wounds to carry, not yours to cause, and not yours to fix. You were always worth showing up for. I want you to hear that. I want you to feel that. I want you to know that inherently, not from him, from the truth of it. You were always worth showing up for. And if there is anger here today, let it be here. Anger is not the opposite of love. Sometimes it is love with nowhere to go. Breathe into the anger. And breathe it out. You are allowed to love someone and still acknowledge what they cost you. Both things can be true. Both things are true. I want you to place one hand on your heart. Feel your own heartbeat, the heart that kept beating through all of it, through the leaving, through the waiting, through the loving of a complicated man. This heart of yours It is extraordinary. It kept loving even when loving was hard. That is not weakness. That is one of the bravest things a human being can do. If he has passed, I want you to know He sees it now. The love you carried, the grace you extended, the way you showed up even when he didn't. He sees it now. And if there are words you never got to say, say them now in your heart. He will receive them. Love crosses every boundary, including the one between this world and the next. Take a breath. And one more. I'm sending healing energy to you now. If you can feel it, receive it. If you can't, that's okay. It reaches you anyway, into every place you have held this grief into every place the love got complicated, into the child in you who waited, into the adult in you who kept going. You are held, you are seen, and you are not alone in this. Begin to come back slowly. Wiggle your fingers. Take a deeper breath. If your eyes were closed, let them open. However you feel right now, that is right. There is no wrong way to move through this. Come back to this meditation whenever you need it. There is no limit. And if today is hard, if Father's Day brings more grief than gratitude, you are allowed to feel exactly that. You don't have to perform anything today. Take care of yourself.
