Hair Removal Options

Makeup artist Leticia Calhoun-Smith walks through four ways to remove facial hair: waxing, threading, plucking, and razors. She swears by cheap beauty-supply razors for quick results that last three weeks, but recommends waxing for heavier hair or a mustache. Threading and plucking hurt too much for her.

So since I'm on a journey to get rid of this, and since it's not been my thing prior to now to make it a priority, I figured I would ask for some help. So I called on my friend Leticia Calhoun-Smith, who's not only my friend, but she's also a makeup artist who makes sure that when I'm doing a photo shoot or a video, I don't look like this. I figured she might have a thought or two about facial hair and how to remove it. The first question is, do you struggle with facial hair?
Do I struggle with facial hair? Yes. Let me tell you why. There's this one little piece of hair right here that comes out of my chin. It comes out like every other week. And then I got this other little piece of hair over here. At first I was like, is this hereditary? Did this come from my grandmother or something? Because it need to go be with Jesus. But anyway, yes, I struggle with facial hair, and so we're gonna talk about how to get rid of the facial hair.
Okay, second question: what are the options for getting rid of facial hair? Since you're the pro makeup artist, what do you say we can do?
Wax, or you can use this little weapon right here. This is what I use. This is my little razor. That I get from the beauty supply that's about 99 cents. And I just take this— now of course if you have a mustache like some of us do, you can wax that or you can thread it. Now I personally don't like threading because it's very painful and I can't take pain. I also don't like plucking because it's very painful and I can't take pain. So therefore, the easiest thing for me is to take this nice little razor right here, you know, I just get that little chin hair and I just kinda get real close and I just clip it right off. And then I also have this little one right here I told y'all about earlier. I just take this, I just get rid of it, and it's just like gone. And it'll stay gone for about 3 weeks, but some kind of way it likes to raise up its ugly head. But anyway, like I said, wax, thread, pluck, or 99 Cent at the beauty supply, this razor right here that is super tabulous.
Which option do you actually recommend, not just for general facial hair but for my mustache?
Now I like to use that little 99-cent razor, but if you have a mustache or a lot of facial hair, I do recommend waxing. Now a lot of people like to thread, but again, it takes a little longer because you take the individual hair with thread and you just keep plucking it out, you know. And so if you can take that pain, which I cannot, that's fine for you. However, if you do have a lot of facial hair, I would say the quick and easy way is to wax.
Okay, so decisions, decisions. Wax, thread, pluck, the 99-cent thing. I don't know what to do.
