Ethan Khoza leads an 8-minute workout on creating space with ball-handling footwork and dribble moves. You'll work through toe tap snatch-backs, between-the-legs floats, step-backs, and jab combos, all designed to get separation from defenders without needing a hoop.

There are no excuses. We can work on our ball handling at home, our shooting, our finishing, but we can also work on our space creation and our ability to create separation. That's what we're going to do in today's workout. For this workout, this isn't like any normal workout. You're going to follow along with me. You're going to take your phone, your computer, you're going to grab a basketball, you're going to get a little bit of space outside in your garage, wherever. You're going to follow along. Do this workout with me. It's going to be eight minutes. We're going to go through a few different drills that are going to help you to create space and become a person who can really get separation from their defender. A lot of players think they need a ton of time or a ton of space to be able to work on their ability to create space, create separation, but that's not true. We're going to take a little bit of space right here in one basketball in eight minutes of your time and we're going to get better at creating space. Let's get into it. Alright, let's get into it. This first exercise we're gonna do is called toe tap, snatch backs. And all we're gonna do is we're gonna go between our legs. We're gonna go all between the right leg first. And if you notice my feet, I'm taking a little tap and I'm taking a bigger step when I cross the ball back over. So you see a nice little one, two, boom, one, two, snatch that ball back. Really working on being able to change speeds, be explosive. Right here we really making sure this cross, this snatch back is as quick as we can get it. We're going to switch legs at 30 seconds. Going through that left leg. Now same thing, really push yourselves with the footwork guys. This is a very, very effective move to have if you can get the footwork down. And for a lot of you guys, it's going to be a little tougher with that left leg. But learn it and then push yourself. Try and go as fast as possible. Now we're going to go with some between the legs floats. So you'll see right here I'm floating to the side, boom. Cross between the legs, float between the legs. You guys want to make sure that we create space to the side with that float dribble and then boom, you go explosive as possible between your legs. Really working on that ball speed being explosive. You know, in the context of a game, this is when you get your defender to rise up, to relax with that float dribble and then quick between your legs and you beat him. But you have to make sure that between the legs is as explosive as possible. This is again a time where you can mess up. Don't be afraid to mess up. Focus on really pushing yourself, going as fast as possible. When you start to get tired, push through that fatigue. You're going to either get better or you're going to get worse. When you get tired, you got to make that decision. Push yourself, Take a second, catch your breath. Now we're going to get into our floats, double behind the back crossovers. So you can see right here, I'm folding to the side, going behind my back twice and then finishing with the crossover to create space again. You guys want to make sure that this final crossover is very explosive. Really create space with it. This is a complex combo move right here, and you're going to mess up if you push yourself. You see me messing up right here. I'm pushing myself, trying to get better right here. We talked about in the last video, don't be afraid to look bad right now. Be willing to look bad in practice so you can look good when it matters. But right now, the only thing that matters is getting better. So push yourself, Go as fast as you can. Create space with that flow, dribble between your or behind your back quickly into that crossover. Take another quick breather right here. Now we're going to get into our continuous step back series. So for this first 30 seconds, you're going to take one dribble, go immediately into a step back, alternating between going to your left and going to your right. So when you go to your right, you're stepping back with that left foot, bringing that ball into that shot pocket and really working on that footwork, getting those feet in a position to where you could shoot from it. So after 30 seconds, we're going to switch to two dribbles. So same exact thing, except now you're taking two dribbles going into that step back. Remember, same thing with the footwork going to your right, you're stepping back with your left, going with your left, stepping back with your right. Now we're getting into our stationary jabs. Now, you guys already know one of my favorite moves in the game of basketball is the jab step. It's super simple but super effective for any players. Regardless of your height, your athleticism, it doesn't matter if you can effectively jab, you're going to be able to get open shots and open driving lanes. But you got to make sure you do it the right way. So as you see right here, we're starting, going, all right, making sure when I jab the basketball, I get the ball all the way to my outside knee. I shift my body weight and my foot to that side. So you see, body weight, ball, and foot are all going to the right to try and sell that jab. Going that way, try and sell that drive. Now we're going to the left. Switching up at 30 seconds. You'll see it again. That ball is going all the way across to my left knee. I'm really selling that. I'm putting it down, going to drive to my left, my body weight shifting. I'm getting my defender to bite that way so that I can go back to my right. And you'll see in our next series, we're going to add on to it, but you got to make sure that you set up the move effectively. You got to make sure you have a great jab step. Now we're going to add on to our last one. Going into our jab one dribble. So you're going to see right here, we're alternating between jabbing to the right and jabbing to the left. You're going to jab, you're going to take one dribble the opposite way. So again, make sure that jab is explosive. Get that ball all the way across really, really violently, and then you're going to take one dribble the opposite way as quickly as possible. You want to shift your defender, and then, boom, you're going the other, the other way right there. Really being able to train the ability to shift your defender and get into that one dribble. Pull up right here. Jab, go one dribble. Make sure you guys continue to value every single rep, even when you get tired. You've been going for a while. Understand that every single rep is equally as important. All right? If your 30th rep isn't as good as your first rep, that's a problem. You got to make sure every rep is as good as you can make it and your minutes up. Let's keep it going. All right, now we're going to get into our jab one dribble step back series, really putting everything together that we've worked on so far. One thing I want to say about the jab step is that I want you to make sure that you don't let that back foot slide. What I mean by that is that pivot foot that you have make sure that you don't let it slide so that you don't get a travel called. So you see right here, my right foot is my pivot foot. I'm making sure that I stay nice and low. You'll see my left foot right here, making sure I stay low enough that when I jab, it doesn't slide. I don't get a travel call. And if you find that that's happening to you, make sure you get lower when you jab. That's going to help you to keep that foot planted. Sink your hips, get low. And another benefit is that it's going to allow you to be more explosive on your jab. And when you're trying to go into that one drill, pull up. If you stay nice and low, you. You're going to be able to quickly get your body from that jab into that one dribble. Pull up, and we'll finish it out here, guys. This last 10 seconds again, make sure last rep is just as good as your first one. All right? Push through the fatigue, get better, and cement in that work that you've already put in and done. That's great. Focus work, guys. Eight minutes. Eight focused minutes. That's how we do it. Let me know what you guys think of this workout. Let me know what questions you guys have.
