A recorded interview (Dec 19, 2021) with Tyler Leclerc, a Massachusetts-based basketball trainer and founder of TJL Training and co-founder/contributor to Mastery Hoops. Tyler describes his transition from player to full-time trainer (began training in high school; finished school May 2018; owns a gym in Lowell, MA), his teaching philosophy centered on skill acquisition and motor learning, and practical coaching methods: using constraints/variability to keep drills challenging (example: Mikan modifications), reverse-engineering drills from problems, fostering player problem-solving and autonomy, and building relationships to increase buy-in and confidence. The conversation also outlines Mastery Hoops’ mission to bridge the art and science of training and provide resources for coaches, trainers, and players.
