Decision Making and Reactionary Drills (BIG Announcement)

Ethan Khoza breaks down reactionary drills that make up 80% of his workouts because they force players to think and translate practice to games. He walks through mirror progressions and live 1-on-1 and 1-on-2 variations, then announces his Vision Driven camp: July 2-4 in State College, Pennsylvania, limited to 18 players per group.

As soon as he goes, yeah, yeah. So you guys start that live dribble.
Still.
Not give you the bucket. Get that. I know, dude, I know. The defense in this defense on this court right now is ridiculous. So what I mean is, Cameron, you got to be.
It's like, oh, you're going through and.
You'Re doing a pull up or you're.
Doing a layup or whatever.
And it's like, oh, you know, there's.
No defense out here. So I don't think about it. But now when you add that reactionary element to it, where you're going left.
Right or whatever, the call might be two or three. Now you have to.
That, that, that's another part that you.
Have to think about. So you can't be on autopilot all the time.
So before we get into the rest of the video, guys, I want to preface this by saying that re. Reactionary and live drills are probably how I spend about 80% of all my workouts. And that's simply because it gets the best results. It's not always the cleanest or the prettiest. When you're in practice, players are going to make a lot of mistakes, they're going to miss a lot of shots, they're going to mess up. But ultimately it doesn't matter how good you look in practice. It ultimately only matters how good you are when it's actually game time. And those two aspects, reactionary drills and live drills, help to build those game skills. Reactionary and live drills help to build two super important skills if you want to be a great player. The first skill is adapt ability. And that simply just means the ability to figure things out even when it's not perfect. A defender might put you in a tough spot, they might reach for the ball, a double team might come, the help. Defense might step up early, you might get fouled. You have to be able to adapt and overcome those situations if you want to be a great player because defenses will change things up on you. And the better you are at adapting and overcoming those things, the better you're going to be consistently. So our reactionary drills really build this adaptability quality. Typically, I'm giving them some sort of verbal cue that they have to react to, which, which also forces them to be way more mindful as they're going through these drills. So they can't just be robots going through the motions, which again helps to translate that to a game setting as well. The second skill that's developed through this is decision making. Specifically that's the case with Our live drills, decision making is a crucial skill and that's why we do so many live drills. Understanding when to shoot or when to attack, knowing where to attack, knowing where to make the extra pass, knowing what to do when that help defense steps up. Knowing what to do if that defense plays you to your inside or they play the opposite side. Knowing what to do with that defender tries to cut you off early. Those are all aspects, aspects that are developed through these live games which you don't really develop when you're just working on skills by yourself. But as you guys all know, that's obviously a major part of basketball, so we should be training it. And the unfortunate reality is that it's one of the most severely under trained aspects of basketball and that's why so many players struggle with it. But all the drills in this video are going to help you guys out. Specifically, these reactionary and live drills are going to help you guys to develop those two skills. Which leads me to my big announcement. I'm going to be hosting the first ever Vision Driven basketball decision making and elite skills camp. And this is going to happen Friday, July 2 through Sunday, July 4. The camp is going to take place at the gym that I train out of in State College, Pennsylvania. And this camp is going to be a middle school camp as well as a high school camp. It'll be split up for boys and girls players. It's going to focus heavy on those two things we talked about, adaptability and decision making. Understanding how to develop your skills for a game setting, developing your basketball IQ and helping you start to develop those instincts that it takes to be a great offensive player. You guys are going to be exposed to a ton of different stuff and it's going to be a really, really great weekend. And like I said, not only are we going to hit that decision making and adaptability piece, but we're also going to hit those other skills like shooting, ball handling, finishing. So you can prove holistically as an all around player as well. Because this is a camp where it needs to be really hands on. We're going to limit each group to only 18. So 18 for the middle school camp, 18 for the high school camp. So if you're interested in that, the link to sign up is going to be in the description down below. You can go check that out. I mentioned on my podcast last week that I'd love to have players from all over be at this. I love to have players from all over. Pennsylvania, from Ohio, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, the dmv. It'd be awesome. Be able to get a bunch of different players from different places here. So like I said, guys, link below to check that out. Let's get into the video.
Let's go, rj, Brendan, and let's go Cam, Aiden. Okay, so these are our. Our mirror drill to start off. So we'll go one dribble. You guys all know this, but I'm your guy keeping this distance. What you've done. Have you done this with us? Okay, so all that it is. Cameron, you're back at the start. We have probably about 6ft of space right here. He's keeping this distance with me, so if I speed up, he's got to be with me. If I slow down, he's got to stay back. Okay, he's taking one dribble into any move he wants to out of that.
So one boom, one boom.
Keep that same distance. So we start going. He's keeping that. If I speed up, he's got to get there. So it's really just being creative, doing whatever you want. And that will build stuff off that. But make sure again, it's one go. Okay, Challenge yourself with that. Here we go.
Let's switch it again.
We're gonna go with this mirror now. So you guys move down a little bit to see us in space. He's going side to side, and you've got to mirror him. So if I'm here, you got to stay with me. Keep that same distance still. Okay, so keeping it with one dribble for now. So one then whatever you want. Okay? Okay, good. We'll go one more. So now it's no dribbles in between, so same thing. I gotta mirror you.
Okay.
All crossovers now. Okay, all crossovers. Let's get corner, and Cameron, you got ball first. All we're doing is going around the arc. Imagine as if there was a defender here and whatever sort of moves you want to moving yourself to the side at some point while you guys go.
So we're here.
We're moving.
I'm gonna yell go at some point. As soon as I say go, attack and finish it. Go.
Go.
Go. Camera. You can stop there. All right, let's get one on defense. Or you can play defense first. So how this is gonna work, you're gonna do the same exact thing. Rj, you're kind of sliding. You have to play deep is right at first because it's not live till I say go. As soon as I say go, then it's live. One on, one off that. Okay, we'll say, yeah, let's go. Actually, let's go. Three seconds to score. Okay, you got three seconds. Go. One, two.
Good.
Go.
Once.
Shot. Go. One, two. Take one, two, three. Go. One, two.
Go.
Two. Right here. And we're gonna go angled one on one. So how this will work, RG if you're defending me to start off, you're gonna be like, on my end or. Yeah, I'm inside here or I'm outside, I guess. And we're playing off this live dribble, so as soon as I take my first step, it's live. Okay. And then after that, it's just. We'll go three dribble max off this. Okay? Three drill max of this. So here on my go, I'm here. And then we're playing off of that. And actually, I'll give you. I'll give you. Let's say this has to be a jump shot for now, okay? Has to be a jump shot for now shot. So what I mean is, Cameron, you've got to be.
And here's who really start to piece everything together that we've done this workout. It's one thing to hit shots against air. It's another thing to have to hit shots when you have a defender on you. It's a different type of feeling. So we want to make sure that we're translating what we're doing in practice to what we're doing against actual defenders that you're going to see in game. So very, very important that we end with this. Again, you're going to see some of those same shots we were just working on. Now guys are going to get a feel for the speed they have to go at and how they're going to have to go about hitting these shots.
Hey, you guys start off that dribble, too. You didn't that time shot. Okay, we'll do the same thing now, except we'll bring this line this way, and we're going to have one more defender. So it'll be one on two now. So how this will work is we'll keep those same guys over there. Cam, you're going to ball first, okay? So we'll have same guy out on defense out there, and then we're gonna go one more guy, start under the basket. As soon as you go, you gotta slide, get here, and then you're back playing. Okay? So you can now finish at the rim if you want to, but there's an additional defender, so you don't have.
To go around the cone.
You just gotta get your foot level to it. As soon as he goes. Yeah, yeah. So you're gonna start on that logo also shot. It will not give you the. It will not give you the bucket.
Get this.
How this will work. You'll start with it, you'll pass. We're gonna block a blogging, go past Cameron, he's passing rj, you're closing out to rj. So as soon as you pass to CAMERON you close RJ.
Yeah.
And then, and then RJ's got to make a pass over to Brandon and then Cameron's close out to Brennan's. Live off that. Okay, so three dribble each possession that you have it but then once you get it back you can go again. 1. We're going to stay with that similar thing because now I'm going to going to be reacting.
So all that means is you're going to go into that same thing, claim.
How you want to play him and.
You'Re going to go into that move right there.
Okay.
So boom, boom there. Okay.
If I don't say anything to you, just pull up. If I say go then it's some sort of counter off.
Okay. So into that move that might mean if you're there, I'll go. That's feet there.
That could be your shot.
That could be there there. Go, go. Good.
Go. Whatever you want to do up here. If I say three, you're going into that three point shot off the dribble player.
Take two getting into mid range for the pull up. The catch is as you start to go, I can give you. I can say three and I can quit saying two. I can do three again and you gotta just go.
If you have those shots before I.
Call those numbers then gotta go with that. Three. Oh, now two, three, two and that's your shot.
Three.
Get five.
Three, two, three, two, three, two. Good.
Get one more.
Two, three.
Yesterday before. But we're going to add some reacting stuff to it.
So one, two, boom. Going right into our same exact thing.
Difference is he not feet forward.
If I give you right, right side finish.
Left, left side finish. Okay, but decently. Right, right, left, right.
Left, right, left.
Left, right, left.
