FULL Competitive Ball Handling and Passing Workout

Ethan Khoza runs a full ball-handling workout covering one-handed passing, the "kill the grass" semicircle drill for creative dribbling, and a "steal the ball" drill to handle pressure. The session ends with one-on-two live play where ballhandlers must create angles and play physical.

In this video, I'm going to take you guys through a full ball handling session that I went through at my camp. This workout focuses on all aspects of ball handling. Not just your ball control, but also your ability to pass the ball, your ability to play physically and create advantageous angles for yourself to score as well. So it takes a very holistic approach to your ability to be a ball handler and make plays. So grab a couple friends or a couple teammates and get after it.
On the outside of my body with that.
All right.
Taking that step with that same foot.
For.
Fighting for my feet on that catch.
Hit me right. Hit him right back. A major point of emphasis for us with passing is being able to pass the ball outside of your body with one hand. The majority of passes are not going to be your typical chest passes or bounce passes that you might throw with two hands. So your ability to be able to throw the ball with either hand is a massive part of being a great ball handler.
What was the other concept that we mentioned yesterday?
Probably.
I probably said it 50 times, but it was probably the first. I mean, it was the very first slide of the presentation. What was the one thing that you guys have to be okay with messing up?
Right.
So if you throw a pass that you might not be quite ready to throw yet, that's fine.
Okay.
That's why we're doing it, so we can get better at it. Let's go back with that right there for a few more seconds.
Here we go. So we build this to a point where we're really creative with these passes, throwing some behind the backs, getting balances as well, and also keeping our feet active and. And landing on two on the catch so that we can make a quick decision. Right after that, we went into our kill the grass drill. So basically, you're just going to pick an area. We use a semicircle, and you're going to imagine that there's grass on every inch of that area. And your goal is to be creative with different dribble combos and try and kill every single blade of grass inside of that. The point of this drill is to push yourself and not be perfect. So if you're never losing the basketball, you probably aren't pushing yourself hard enough, and you probably aren't getting better the way that you should be. So make sure you really challenge yourself and make yourself uncomfortable.
Okay, so Jack's going at some point, that hand's up, and he's right back to him. So now you better have an understanding of you're going to tune In. He might be relocating too. So aide might give it to me.
He might go somewhere else around the circle. Okay.
You gotta be able to find him right here. We talk about passing here. Now we're passing off the dribble, not the catch anymore. So how I want this to look is, aim's my guy right here. I'm going, I'm going, I'm going.
Boom.
He's gonna get it to me. I want it one hand off the dribble.
Okay.
So my left hand's not even coming to it. Just the other way.
Okay.
And he gets it there.
Boom.
It's with my left hand now outside of the body.
Okay. So now we're doing the same kill the grass drill, but we're adding in an external cue. So your coach or your teammate is going to put their hands up at some point as you're going and you're me. They're going to get them that pass off the dribble with one hand, trying to fire them as fast as possible. And then they'll get it right back to you and you'll continue on with the kill the grass drill. Your coach or teammate can also relocate after every pass to make it more difficult for you to have to turn and find them as well. Really emphasize throwing that pass as hard as you can and getting that ball in as quickly as possible.
Let's say Zema's on offense first. Sam's on defense. Next time, Zema's gonna rotate off. Sam's gonna go on offense. Y' all come in on defense.
Okay?
So how this is gonna work? So Zema's got the ball right here.
I'm gonna be.
I'm gonna be defense on Zemu right here. It's basically the same thing. Zemu's using a bunch of different combos, trying to handle the basketball. And I'm just playing defense on. I'm trying to steal the ball. Okay.
I'm trying to take that ball away from me.
So Zemo's got to make sure he.
Hasn'T let me grab me.
Uhoh.
Probably go for 10 seconds. So now we're going with the steal the ball drill. So now we're going to keep that passer out there. But now there's a defender in the circle trying to steal the ball away. So now you've got to learn how to play physical and be able to handle the basketball with pressure. The defense will steal the ball at any time, except once the passer is throwing it back into the ball handle, they have to let the pass get Back and then other than that, it's live.
That way right there. Okay, whose advantage is it now?
Well, technically it's his because he's a little bit closer to the basket and.
We'Re both spreading the same way. But how can I create the advantage right here if we're playing right here?
Exactly.
All that I gotta do right here is get myself right in front of Sam.
Very easy to get my own advantage.
Right here if we're going. Okay, so let's just walk it right here, Sam. Okay, so we're walking, we're walking. Sam's on my shoulder and then I grab myself right on his inside there. Sam's got no chance of recovering, but Sam and I do that and we're coming down. I just go this way. Sam might be able to recover, but he might be able to get the angle on me. So I've got to make sure I change my angle and get right in front of Sam so I can keep him there. We're going to go to score right here. So we'll probably start about right here.
Okay.
I'm just going to be trying to kind of throw Sam off. So we're walking right here. Sam's standing right on my shoulder, and at some point I'm running, creating that angle where I get in front of Sam and I'm going to go finish it. Run it back. Run that back, run that back. So listen, if you guys want to be great ball handlers, it's not all about just being able to control the basketball stuff we've been doing so far. It's also about your ability to play physically.
Okay.
If I'm being guarded by somebody and I want to get to that angle, I've got to say I'm getting to that spot right there. And it doesn't matter if you grab me, if you try and bump me a little bit, like I'm going to get there. So if you guys want to be great ball handlers, it's. It's about the ball control stuff that we do, but it's also about, you know, I've got to get to that angle. So I'm going to make sure I get there.
Okay.
I've got to get there. All right, Zim, let's see it again.
You're here.
We'll get this way now. She's behind you. Now you only got to worry about.
One defender right here. And now with this last door meshing everything into a one on two live situation, we're working to get that angle and cut in front of the defender while that help defender comes from across the lane. The goal is to create a one on one situation and then finish in the paint. Give this workout a try and let me know what you think.
