So I wanted to take you guys behind the scenes and show you the full workout that I had here with a couple of my high school and college guys. This workout really illustrates the progression that I try and go through with a lot of skills that we're going to hit. We start off with a little bit of ball handling mostly as a warm up, and then we make it competitive. So just to get us going a little bit, this workout was focused on being able to create quick separation in the mid range and being able to hit tougher, contested shots. We start by repping out those shots against no defense. And then eventually we progress to a point where, where we can add a defender on the floor and make it live one on one, then eventually to one on two and eventually to two on two. So we can take that skill that we introduce and get into live play, which is where the most growth is going to happen. Let's get into it.
All right, we'll start baseline and actually we'll partner up first to get going. We'll partner up so we can go. Let's go rj, Brendan. And let's go, Cam, Aiden. Okay, so our, our mirror drill to start off. So we'll go one dribble. You guys all know this, but I'm your guy keeping this distance. What you've done, have you done this with us? Okay, so all that it is. Cameron, you're back at the start. We have probably about 6ft of space right here. He's keeping this distance with me, so if I speed up, he's got to be with me. If I slow down, he's got to stay back. Okay, he's taking one dribble in any move he wants to out of that. So one boom, one boom. Keeping that same distance. So we start going. He's keeping that. If I speed up, he's got to get there. So it's really just being creative, doing whatever you want and that will build us up off that. All right, here we go. A lot of you guys know that.
I'm a big fan of adding creativity and freedom into ball handling. And especially when I'm in a group like this when everybody already has a good handle. This is really about giving guys the freedom to experiment and, and to get a good feel for the ball, to get a good feel for their movements. And that's really how I like to approach ball handling when it comes to this point. So everything that we do to warm up with ball handling is all going to be creative stuff, giving guys freedom to kind of do whatever they Want to do Good.
So let's go one more time. Actually, we got to switch it again anyway.
Okay.
So. But make sure again, it's one go. Okay, Challenge yourself with that. Here we go. Okay, good. So now let's. Let's switch it again. We're gonna go with this mirror now. So you guys move down a little bit just so you have some space. Okay. So Aiden, only difference is with this, he's going side to side and you've got to mirror him. So if I'm here, you got to stay with me. Keep that same distance still. Okay, so keeping it with one dribble for now. So one then whatever you want. Okay, It. Okay, good. We'll go one more. So now it's no dribbles in between. So same thing. I gotta mirror you.
Okay.
All crossovers now. Okay, all crossovers. Good in.
Good in.
Goodbye. Okay, let's get corner and Cameron, you got ball first. Let's go. Someone on defense. Doesn't matter. For now you can take defense. So we're going around the arc and it's going to be a freestyle off that. Actually, before we get to that, let's go. No defense for this first rep, just so we get a sense for how it is. So all we're doing is going around the arc. Imagine as if there was a defender here and whatever sort of moves you want to moving yourself to the side at some point while you guys go. So we're here, we're moving. I'm gonna yell go at some point. As soon as I say go, attack and finish it. Okay, Go. If I don't say go before he gets to half, you can. You can just start. Can start anyway. Go. Good. Go. Go. Cameron, you can stop there. All right, let's get one on defense. RG can play defense first. So how this is going to work, you're going to do the same exact thing. Rj, you'll be kind of sliding. You don't have to play deepens right at first because it's not live till I say go. As soon as I say go, then it's live one on, one off that. Okay.
We'll say.
Yeah, let's go. Actually, let's go. Three seconds to score. Okay, you got three seconds.
Go.
One, two.
Good.
So we'll keep running it through and eventually we'll go. We'll make it competitive and we'll go score. You stay, but keep running it through for now.
So this is another example of adding that creativity into the ball handling. And then we can make it competitive by Adding in that defender and also that time limit. So this means that you can't just be in autopilot because you're waiting to hear that command from me. And then you actually have to score on that guy within three seconds. So it helps us to keep the intensity up and ultimately helps us to translate that work better into competitive situations.
Go, one, shot, go, one. Go. One, two. Take one, two, three. Go. One, two, Go, two. Go, shot, go, go. Let's go.
Elbow.
Let's go. Line at the elbow, we grab Evan, can you throw me one of those balls back there? So we'll go at the elbow. To start off, we're gonna go two, like a two dribble combo, and then we'll go into a three dribble. So if I'm here, 1, 2, 1, 2, 3. And then that's my shot right there. I can take one more drill after that if I want to. Doesn't matter.
Let's start. Right hand though.
So I'm here. 1, 2, 1, 2, 3. I can get there for my shot or I can go right off of that. Whatever you want it to be. Okay, right into your shot. Go. Let's get squirrel. There's going. Oh, back you, Brandon. My bad, my bad. Good.
So we're again hitting this creativity with these combos right here. Obviously in the game, you're probably never going to shoot out of a five dribble combo, but the ability to again, be creative with a basketball, do whatever you want to do with it, and then go into your shot is very, very valuable. So even if in a game it's only a two dribble combo that you're using, you're confident doing that because we've practiced it. And also when you do drills like this, it just gets guys into the mindset of hitting shots and hitting shots at game speed. Because guys are all focused on doing their two moves and their three moves and then we gotta hit the shot after that. So it really primes guys to be able to hit those shots that we get into later on the workout.
Stay at this elbow, do a little bit off of just a pull up, and then we'll go step back off it. So for this first one, we'll go right foot forward. We're just gonna do a quick one dribble pull up. So I'm going left right here. Quick.
Boom.
Right, left, right. And then that's my shot right there. Okay. So trying to get into it. We don't have a lot of space to get downhill off that. So for example, this could be we come off this ball screen here.
Boom.
We see that first dribble out, and then it's. We got a quick into that. So we're here. One, two, quick. That's our shot. Let's start it like. Yeah, almost, like, almost right at the elbow. Good.
One thing you notice later on in the workout is when we start to actually play, getting into game situations, you're going to see these same exact shots that we're working on right now at the elbow. So we want to start off by getting reps and getting these guys confident shooting those shots. And then we want to add in some defense, made them have to make a read a decision and then hit that shallow pressure on them.
So keep it same as that hip. So same on that right foot forward.
Good.
Let's switch those feet. So now left foot forward. Going right. Left.
Good.
Quicker on those feet, though. Good. Ooh, quicker feet, smaller steps. You got this guy who's about to step up to you.
Good.
Let's get three, two. Keep with the same footwork. Now go back to that right side first. Okay. Right foot ahead. We're going. Quick step back out of that. So I'm here. There. That's my step back. Okay. Yes. Get 12 of these short quick steps. Good. Hey, come back to you. 4, 3, 2, 1. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Good. Okay, last one on this side. Go here. One turn. That's your shot now. So there. Good. 9:12. Good. Other side.
One.
Two. Good, Brandon. That's it right there. So on that first one, nice and relaxed. That second one's when you go like you were anticipating it. So you were like here and then there. One regular dribble and then go. Aiden, same thing with you right here. Take it a step forward. Let your feet cross. Good, rj. There it is. It can be a little bit more than that. It can be a little bit more like you're coming down, but then it's like you're going like 65% to 100. Just hold up, Karen, hold up. So again, it's like some sort of ballskit situation, maybe, right? Or like if it's a high screen or if it's even, like you come up a handoff or whatever, and it's like you got a guy here coming up to get you. He's 1, and then you're out creating that space. 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 2, 3. Someone in office. Doesn't matter. You got that ball right here. And we're gonna go angled one on one. So how this will Work. Rg if you're defending me to start off, you're gonna be like, on my ins or my inside here or my outside, I guess. And we're playing off this live dribble. So as soon as I take my first step, it's live. Okay? Okay. And then after that, it's just. We'll go three dribble max off this. Okay. Three drill max of this. So here on my go, I'm here. And then we're playing off of that. And actually, I'll give you. I'll give you. Let's say. No, let's say this has to be a jump shot for now. Okay. Has to be a jump shot for now.
We good?
You want defense? Has to be jump shot. Has to be jump shot. The parties.
Shot.
Shot. So what I mean is, Cameron, you've got to be.
And here's where we really start to piece everything together that we've done this workout. It's one thing to hit shots against air, and it's another thing to have to hit shots when you have a defender on you. It's a different type of feeling. So we want to make sure that we're translating what we're doing in practice to what we're doing against actual defenders that you're going to see in game. So very, very important that we end with this again, you're going to see some of those same shots we were just working on. Now guys are going to get a feel for the speed they have to go at and how they're gonna have to go about hitting these shots.
Hey, you guys start off that dribble, too? You didn't that time.
Shot.
Okay, we'll do the same thing now, except we'll bring this line this way and we're gonna have one more defender. So it'll be one on two now. So, rj, can you grab one of those cones? So how this will work is we'll keep those same guys over there camera. You're ball first. Okay. So we'll have same guy out on defense out there. And then we're gonna go one more guy, start under the basket. As soon as you go, you gotta slide, get here. And then you're back playing. Okay. So you can now finish at the rim if you want to. Okay. But there's an additional defender, so you don't have to go around the cone. You just gotta get your foot level to it. Okay. As soon as he goes. Yeah, yeah. So you guys start that. That live dribble still moves closer. Did he get there? Just get there. Just get there. It's a judgment call. It's a judgment call by the shot. Oh, my gosh. That's what I'm saying. This rim, you can't get there in that many bounces. It will not give you the. It will not give you the bucket.
Get this.
Shot. That too. It. Yeah, you guys, if you guys want to call, if you can, I'll let you guys do it.
Take.
All right, let's switch sides. Go back to one on one.
Shot.
Shot it. I know, dude, I know. The defense in this defense on this court right now is ridiculous. That turnaround that way is always like straight on. It's just a little short.
Everything.
Want it? We did it. We did this already, but I don't think you've done it. So how this will work, you'll start with it, you'll pass. We're gonna block and block you to go past Cameron. He's passing rj. You're closing out to rj. So as soon as you pass the Cameron, you close RJ. Yeah. And then, and then RJ's got to make a pass over to Brandon and then Cameron's close enough to Brendan. It's live off that. Okay, so three dribble each possession that you have it, but then once you get it back, you can go again. One.
Two.
It take good. Let's split it up and then we'll just end it with. Let's go, let's go. Cameron, RJ here, Aiden, Brendan down there and we'll go 10 makes five spots. So 10 makes switch it and then just go all five spots.
I pretty much end every workout with some form of shooting.
A lot of workouts will go out.
Of a relocation or off some sort of movement or. But today I decided we'd just end it with some regular spot up shots. The most important area for all of these guys is their ability to hit three point shots because everything else in the game opens up for them if they're able to do that and all these guys can hit those shots. So it's important that we build on that and we continue to make sure that the shots that they're going to get the most, which is going to be for the most part, three point shots are shots that they can hit at a very, very high cl.
I don't know, but I want to see something.
