Being able to create your own shot in basketball is so important. And the punch drag is a move that's very, very effective at doing this. Defenders get used to seeing certain movement patterns from offensive players. So when you stop short with that punch dribble instead of taking that next step, a lot of times it's going to create space for you to either shoot or drive or make a play for your team. Footwork is a major point of this workout, so make sure you guys really pay attention to the details here. Let's get into it.
For the first part of our warm up, we're going to go knee hugs into explosive forward lunges. As you see, after I come up for that lunge, I'm jumping off of that front leg.
For all of these, you're going to.
Go to half court and back. Next you'll go quad stretch into reverse lunges. Now we're going to go with these continuous side cuts. As you see, all I'm doing is going back and forth, making these cuts side to side, priming my body to be ready to make cuts when the workout starts. To start off our shooting warm up.
We'Re going to go with paint jump shots. And all you're going to do is.
You'Re going to stay in the paint.
Be creative, shoot whatever kind of shots that you want to. Switching that up between off the dribble, off the catch, off the spin off, different moves, doesn't matter, but you're going to make 20 shots total. So to continue on with our shooting warm up, we're really going to drill in some footwork right here. We're going to start off with this hop footwork. So as you're going to see, I'm.
Going to start with a foot in front of the other one and then I'm going to hop on that first.
Step, land and shoot the ball. You're going to alternate the foot that you hop off of every single time. So the first time I might hop.
Off my left foot, land on two, shoot it, and the second time I.
Might hop up my right foot, land.
On two, shoot it. You're going to go for eight makes.
Next we'll go one dribble and work.
On our one two footwork.
We're going to start off taking the left, right step into that jump shot.
You're going to go for eight makes.
With this.
And then you'll switch it, you'll go right left for eight makes as well.
For this next part of our shooting warmup, we're going to work on our.
Ability to Shoot coming off of this punch dribble. This is really building the foundation and targeting that footwork.
For our first shot, we're going to.
Go straight into a punch dribble and then into a foot replacement shot, which basically just means I'm going to go from having my left or my right foot in front to now getting my feet into a shooting position and I'm going to go up into the jump shot. For our next shot, we're going to start with that punch dribble. Then we're going to go into a foot replacement, into a step back. You want to make sure for all of these that your weight is really loaded up on that front foot so we can simulate the punch drag that we're going to get into later. Now, for our final variation, we're going to start with a punch dribble. Then we're going to take a second dribble going into a bump off into our jump shot. At the Division 1 level, the majority.
Of finishes come off of two feet.
So it's clearly a very important skill to have. Yet it's very under trained by players. So today's workout, all of our finishes are going to come off of two feet. The first finish we're going to work on is the extension finish. Coming off of an inside step, then an outside step and get around our defender and extend out for the finish.
You're going to start off with a.
Cone on the wing and you're going to give three manipulation dribbles, as you see me doing. Then you're going to go into a drop and you're going to attack downhill and finish with that extension layup. Take your time and make sure that your footwork is on point before you start to speed up and go game speed. For our next variation, we're going to go back to those three manipulation dribbles. Then you're going to go between the legs and attack the middle. And again you're going to step inside foot, outside foot, and then extend for that layup. Remember the context that we're doing this in. We're simulating that that help defender is coming across the paint to try and contest your shot.
We're going to go up.
The ball is going to be in the center of our body. And then when that defender bites and raises up, we're going to extend the ball out to the right side and finish it around that defender. And now for our last finishing variation, we're going to go with the three manipulation dribbles again. Then you're going to go into any double combo that you want to. You're going to attack downhill and you're going to finish with a stride stop, which basically just means you're going to go outside foot, then inside foot finish.
Now we're going to get into this punch drag series coming on the wing and for this first series we're going to be driving towards the baseline. Every time you're going to start off with this little self pass drift as you see me doing here before catching the ball. And you can choose to either attack the closeout right away or you can choose to wait a second, survey the floor, then go into that one dribble, punch, drag, foot replacement jump shot. Keep in mind that our goal when going to this move is that we flip our defender's hips because we sell that downhill drive. So that first dribble on the attack really needs to sell the fact that you're driving to get all the way to the basket before you go to that punch drag. For our second variation you're going to catch the ball and again you're going to attack, go one dribble downhill, punch drag, right into a step back. Now you're going to come off of this drift, you're going to go catch, downhill, attack, punch drag and then into that bump off for the shot. For this next variation you're going to catch the ball, attack, downhill, punch drag, Then you're going to go between the legs and finish at the rim with any sort of two foot finish. And for the last variation with this, you're going to attack, go into that punch drag and then you're going to go between the legs and then you're going to go into this little turn dribble bump off into a controlled fade. Now we're going to get into our punch drag middle series. So for all of these you're going to be driving towards the middle. Now our first one will be catch attack with one dribble downhill and then punch drag into the third placement jump shot. The second variation will be catch attack with one dribble, punch drag into a step back. Now we'll go back to two foot finishes. So after you catch it, you're going to attack going to that punch drag. You're going to go with a quick between the legs, get downhill and you're going to finish at the rim with any sort of two foot finish you want. Make sure you guys switch it up and you're creative with how you finish. Next we'll go punch drag between the legs and do a quick one dribble Pull up and we'll end this series with a punch. Drag into that between the legs. Dribble into a one dribble Step back. Make sure you guys click the top link in my description below to get my free Elite Perimeter score workout.
