Lamelo Ball is one of the most polarizing prospects in NBA history. Before the draft, a lot of people thought that he was great. A lot of people thought that he was overrated and riding off of his name. But throughout the first two months of the NBA season, he's proven that he's a legitimate NBA talent and in my opinion, is going to be a superstar in the near future. Let's get into it. Just to give you an idea. At the time of this video, Lamelo Ball leads all NBA rookies in total points, rebounds, assists, season steals, double doubles, triple doubles, and player efficiency rating. Over his last eight games, he's averaging 21.6 points per game on 49 shooting, including 44 from three on 6.3 attempts per game. And within those last eight games, he also put up a career high 34 points against the Utah Jazz. As a pastor and a playmaker, we all knew what Lamelo Ball brought to the table even before he got to the NBA. And he undoubtedly makes his teammates better because of his ability to create situations that create advantages for them. But in his first couple months as an NBA player, Lamelo Ball has shown that he can the ball in an.
Elite level as well.
I want to break down exactly why that is. The first thing is his physical tools. Listed at 6 foot 7, he uses.
His length very, very well offensively to be able to finish and get by people much easier than most point guards can. A lot of times when he drives to the basket, he's able to finish over people and through people. Where the majority of point guards have got to finish over people or around people and be a bit craftier. Lamelo is able to finish in some absolutely incredible ways because of his length. This clip right here is a great example of this. Lamelo comes off of this ball screen and hold defender quickly. Then he jumps from the free throw line off of two feet and lays the ball up.
These are just straight up finishes that.
Most point guards can't make. And when you watch Lamelo play, you'll notice he's able to finish off of one foot or off of two feet. But he'll usually go to two feet.
Whenever he needs to finish in traffic.
Or if he needs to extend away from his defender. And it's a great example of why players need to make sure that they're working on their two foot finishing, that they're able to play off of a jump, stop off of a stride, stop off of an extension off of. Lamelo is really good at all of these and it makes him very Difficult to stop when he's in the paint. Additionally, he provides matchup problems because of his size. He's able to bully smaller guards, and he's also able to clean up plays like this. And not only is he a high level finisher, but he's very, very good at getting himself to the paint. And this is because of his elite ability to change pace because of his length.
If he's able to create even a.
Step on his defender, typically he's going to be able to eat them and get downhill.
In this clip that we looked at where we focus on the finish, the entire reason he gets to the paint is because of his brief change of pace coming off of this screen. When he gets past this screen, he slows himself down as if he was going to shoot the basketball, which causes Connaughton to rush out at him, creating an out of control closeout for Lamelo to attack and therefore get downhill and finish. He's much more explosive than people give him credit for, and a big part of that is because he's able to change his speed so well. Additionally, one other small detail that you'll notice when you see him driving is that he has very, very active off arm, which helps him to keep defenders off of him. In this clip right here, we see the speed change, and then we see the active off arm swipe, which allows him to get all the way to the basket for the finish. And a lot of times where players go wrong with the off arm swipe is that they're too soft with it. You're not trying to fight the guy, but you want to make sure that you get his end off of you. And as you see from Lamelo in both of these clips, it might take a little bit more physicality from you.
And because of his length and athleticism, all he needs is one step on his defender and he has them beat.
That one step he gets on his defender plus the off arm swipe mean that it's almost impossible for that guy to get back in front of him. And he's able to get downhill and either score or create for his teammates. Charlotte loves to set ghost screens for Lamelo to be able to get his defender to give him an angle to attack. As you see in this clip, Miles Bridges comes up and set a ball screen for Lamelo. But instead of actually trying to make contact with Lamelo's defender, Bridges clears up before that even can happen. Then Lamelo slows down to let that big recover back to Bridges. And once he goes, that lane is open and Lamelo can attack. Lamelo is already very capable of scoring at all three levels and one of the most interesting parts of his game is his ability to hit the floater from the mid range. He constantly opts to go for that mid range floater instead of your normal mid range pull up. This is one of the most difficult shots in the game of basketball to hit and the fact that Lamelo can hit the shot consistently goes to show his already very, very advanced skill level. One of the biggest question marks of a Lamelo ball when he came into the NBA was his consistency as a three point shooter. Shot making is one of those things he's going to continue to get better at with time. But up to this point, like I said, he's been shooting the ball at over 40% over his last eight games, which means that defenses have to respect his ability to shoot the ball from that range, which opens up the rest of the floor for him and for his teammates. And on top of all of that, we've all known the great feel for the game that he's had even before he stepped foot in the NBA. This is evident in the way that he's able to pass the ball and set up his teammates. So much of basketball is just being able to make plays and ultimately guys who are playmakers are the ones who win games. Lamelo Ball has been a playmaker since day one and I'm excited to see how he develops in the next couple years.
