How The Best Shooters Train - FULL College Shooting Workout

A college-level basketball shooting workout (coached by Ethan Khoza) that emphasizes game-like variability, decision-making, and competitive pressure rather than rote reps. Drills progress from catch-and-shoot warmups to contested, off-the-dribble, and multi-player reaction drills (e.g., toss-and-step, two-on-one requiring a three) designed to replicate in-game shot variability and pressure.

Being a great shooter is about a lot more than having good form and getting up a ton of reps. Those things matter. But it's also important that we add in as many game like qualities and train them as much as possible. That's what we're targeting hard in this workout. There's a lot of variability from shot to shot, meaning that every shot is different, just like it will be in a game. We're also adding in contests and decision making as well, which are also present in game, which helps us to really see this translate from practice to into those game situations. I had a nice group of college guys over break right here and these guys really got after it for an hour. So let's get into it. So we started off just going straight catch and shoot jump shots. As our warm up, we split the group in half. So two were going on this and two are going at the other end. And the only rule is that you have to change up how you get into each shot. So sometimes you're sliding into it, maybe you backpedal, you might sprint into it, you might get into it just off a standstill catch. But it's got to be different every time. This just allows us to get a nice feel for making shots and build a little bit of psychological momentum as we go forward into more difficult stuff.
Let's go. Central Mountain versus world here. Rj, you go corner to start here. Kaden, you go like wing. Jeremy, you go corner. Kaden, you go win wing. We'll go all extra passes here, so I'll just get it. I'll throw it to your right, to RJ with it. It's make it. You stay though. Okay? So if you miss it, you guys are flipping. Then we'll go first to 10 makes here.
So now we're starting to make a little bit competitive and we're working shots coming off of this different angle with this extra pass. Look, now there's pressure on every shot because you only get to stay if you make the shot and if you miss, then the other person's up. We're going first to 10 again. To add that competitive factor in there, this is a shot that you're going to get in pretty much any offense out there. So it's a pretty important that all these guys can hit the shot consistently.
Keep that one. Rj, let's go back. We're gonna keep it with partners here this time.
Let's go.
We'll go combined score though. Okay, so you guys will be together, you guys will be together. It's gonna Be all like contest. But it's gonna be different angles though. Let's say it's you and me, rj. You might just like kind of move that way a little bit. I'll give you this and then we're up into that shot right there. I'll give you a ball back. We'll flip every time. So you'll, you'll be that guy next. It could be literally whatever you want it to be. You could be like I could just tell you to go that way. I'll chase you down. We could go like, we go like hand off this way and then I can come back to it. But you just gotta give him some sort of press right there on every shot. You guys will flip every time here. We'll go first group to 12 here. First group 12.
So right here we're working some lightly contested shooting. And I like this a lot because it allows us to get a different look and a different shot every time from a defender who's closing out from a different angle each time. So it allows it to be very game like because every shot is very different and there's always pressure. Again, we're keeping it with that competitive thought here as we're going first group to hit 12. And now we're really building that mindset and that ability to lock in and make shots to split light pressure.
Same idea to start though. But now everything's going to be off the dribble. You can choose whether It's Mid Ranger 3 for your dribble here. So that could be like a shot fake to like a side step or whatever you want it to be. So that means defense, you're going to overrun it pretty much every time. We'll go 12 again. Make sure you're flipping. Even if you make it, you're flipping cuz you went, you took like six in a row there at the end.
So now we're working these contested look but everything has to be off the dribble for all these guys. Their primary shots are not going to come off the dribble but they can use that dribble as a counter if that defender is close. They can be able to use shot fakes to be able to get that defender to lift and then either get to side steps or get to pull ups coming in the mid range. Again, I love the randomness of this. Every shot's a little bit different and again we go competitive and go first team to get 12 knees.
You'll start like about on the three point line offensively. So we're Going to toss it back and forth. I can toss it. However, it doesn't matter. You have up to three tosses to like take it into a step. So you tossing me here, you're tossing back and for. I have up to three to step into it and then I'm up. Okay, you can step any direction you want to. You can throw the ball like, you can bounce, pass to them, whatever. As soon as I see you take your step up. Okay, up to three. So it could be on one or on two or on three. Right there before you stand. Let's go first to eight. If you score, stay at your spot. If you miss or you get scored on, you're going across.
So right here we take up the difficulty a little bit here. Offensive defense will toss the ball back and forth. Offense gets up to three tosses to take a step, any direction. And on that step, they're getting to their shot. When that defender sees them take that step, they're contesting it. We're going to score. You stay again to keep that competitive nature high. Now we're really exaggerating some of these contested shots and this is a shot that's harder than a lot of shots that they're going to shoot in a game. But it's a great way to add some challenge into this workout.
I'm going do that all three of you guys today. He said, tell Cam I'll see him tomorrow. I was like, oh, okay. It's a two on one. You guys have to shoot a three though. So rj, you can. Yeah, basically you toss the ball wherever and then you just determine how you want to play. So you can close there and then Jeremy, you go like drive and take cm, whatever. If RJ happens to recover candy, you can keep going, get it back to him. Whatever. Whatever we want here gotta be a three. You can also go like pick and pop. Like you can go screens here. I don't care. It has to be a three. Okay, we'll go first group to eight here. Score. You stay as a group. Hold on. Actually, let's do it this way. Let's go quarter court. So we'll go. Someone starts corner and then like slot.
So right here we have a two on one shooting drill where that defensive player is going to throw the ball and then play it however they want to. The rules of the offense has to get to a three though. So now we had an element of reaction, decision making into this shooting as well. And there's a little bit more pressure too, because now you have a teammate who's relying on you just like you do in a game. This allows to get a lot of game like shots with some of that same pressure that you're going to feel in a game on every single one of these shots. Tensions definitely rising.
You leave those in the dryer too long. Yeah. Why are you not tucking those in? Kind of work off like that side pass again. Almost like an extra or like kind of like a drip. It's almost like Kaylee just thinking almost like, like a pop coming off that small screen. So you're just going to stand here and hold. You're gonna face me, though. So I'm starting here. I'm starting off by like pushing that way. That's gonna take me that direction. So as I go, I'm going this way. And then you're following it with that contestant or you stay. If you miss it or get scored on, you're going over.
So now we're getting into more contested shooting this time though, from a side angle. So that defensive player is going to start with the ball in their hands. That offensive player is going to push them away as they move to the side. That defender will throw them the ball and then culls out and contest that shot. So now we're just working a test from a different angle right there, adding a different level of challenge and momentum. A big part of being a great shooter is being able to make shots going different directions and with your momentum being different. This is a great way to challenge that.
