What's up, guys? Coach Ethan here today I wanted to talk about how to develop your basketball iq. Now, basketball IQ might be the most important part of the game. Basketball IQ is such an important trait to have because it can make up for a lot of deficiencies that you might have in your game. For example, guys who have high basketball IQ and can make the right basketball play are very, very sought after commodities on basketball teams and are invaluable pieces. And before we get into it, let's define what basketball IQ is. Basketball IQ is the ability to read and re to small little details that allow you to anticipate what's going to happen in a basketball game. I'm sure all you guys see players who just always happen to be in the right place at the right time, always seem to make the right play and you're not really sure what it is. That's called basketball iq. And a lot of times guys just naturally pick up on that. But it's okay if you don't naturally have a high basketball iq. We can develop it. And I'm going to tell you some ways you can do that. Right now, the first thing you guys need to do if you want to improve your basketball IQ is watch more games. There's a difference between watching games and learning from games. A lot of times we'll turn on the NBA, we'll turn on a college basketball game, and we'll just watch it to watch it as a fan. And that's all well and good and it's fun to do that. But if you really want to get better, you need to make sure that you take time to watch games to learn as well. Now, what that might mean is you study players and see what they do in different situations and how you can take what they do and apply it to your own game. For example, what I like to do is I like to pick out one player who plays similarly to me and try to learn as much as I can from them. A lot of times it's nice to take notes too. And that way be able to have it in your mind when you go and play. For example, if you're watching a player who's a great defender, watch how he guards the other team's players. Watch the way he defends the three point shot. Watch how he defends, pick and rolls. See what you can learn from him and take those little bits and pieces and add them to your own game. If you're watching a guy who's a great offensive player, see what moves he makes. See when he Makes them see what he does when defenders try to guard him different ways, how does he react to double teams, different stuff like that. If you're a big man and you run a lot of pick and rolls in your offense, watch a player like Clint Capella. If you're a point guard, watch a player like Chris Paul play. In life, if you want to learn things, you have to study them and basketball is no different. You got to put the time in to learn and watch players and be able to emulate what they do. The other piece that will help you develop your basketball IQ is to spend more time playing basketball. This means five on five pickup games. This means three on three, one on one. A bunch of different basketball situations you can put yourself in in develop your basketball IQ and be exposed to a bunch of different situations. Be able to evaluate yourself after you play in these competitive situations and figure out what you did right, what you did wrong, what you can improve upon, and maybe sometimes where you miss some opportunities that you could have had. You can watch a lot of basketball and learn a lot, but you have to actually apply it by playing in games and putting yourself in situations to use what you've learned. Now let's talk about your team focus. If you want to have a high basketball iq, you've got to know the scouting report on the other team that you're playing. Now, if you're in high school or higher, typically scouting report is something that you get for every game. But again, you need to make sure that you study and have this down. So when you get into the games, you mentally know what to do. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. And if you don't get the scouting report down, you won't do as well as you could. If you get into a game and you know the strengths and the weaknesses of your opponent, it's going to be much easier for you to get to spots that you're going to be successful in as opposed to you going into the game not knowing anything. Having that knowledge and being able to study again is going to put you in a much better position than a lot of other players because IQ wise, you're going to know what you're doing. It's also important to know your own team system as well. Know how your offense runs, know all the details and intricacies of your own offense. That way, when you're in the game, it's all second nature when it comes to making plays. The best players in the world and the ones with the highest basketball IQ know the system they play in. Like the back of their own hands and you can tell when you watch them. If you want to be like that, then you've got to put the time in and study that as well. And the last part about developing your basketball IQ is to develop your game awareness. This means that when you're in games, you understand what the situation is. How many timeouts do you have left? How much time is left on the clock? Where is the inbound coming from? What do the matchups look like? Is there a player in foul trouble? The smartest basketball players in the world understand the importance of these little game details. So there it is. Watch and study more basketball games. Play more basketball. Know the scouting report. Know your own team system. If you master those five things, you'll develop a sky high basketball iq.
