Just ride me, baby. What's up, guys? Coach Ethan here. Now, we all know the importance of being able to shoot the basketball. It's arguably the most important skill in today's game, especially as a guard or wing player. If you're a great shooter, you're gonna find yourself with a lot of opportunities to play on a lot of different teams. So understanding this and the importance of shooting, we have to know that being able to get your shot off quickly is also very, very important. As you start to play against better and better competition and guys start to get bigger and more athletic, the defense is going to be better. That means the time you're going to have to get your shot off is going to decrease. You have to be able to get your shot off quickly, but not only that, it has to still keep that accuracy that it has. So if you find yourself struggling to get your shot off quickly, I'm going to give you guys some tips right now to help you out with that. First thing to understand is that you want to make sure you're always ready to shoot the ball. This means you're always low and you always have your hands ready in your shooting pocket to catch that ball. If you watch any of the great shooters in the NBA who have quick shots, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, you'll notice that they always ready to shoot the ball when they're coming around screens. All right, here is Thompson again. Here's Thompson will just check back in a knock shot. You'll see he's always low, ready to catch the ball, and he immediately can go with that shot because he prepares himself before the the ball gets there. Understand that in a lot of aspects of basketball, the play does not start when you get the ball. Shooting is a great example of that. You need to be ready to shoot the ball before it even gets to you. Because if you try and get ready when it gets to you, it's too late. Somebody's contesting or blocking your shot. Now, a myth in basketball is that you should never lower the ball when you catch it. This is commonly referred to as dipping the basketball. And it essentially means that you catch the basketball, you go back down quickly and then right back up with it. The old school manner of teaching this is the coach will tell their players not to do it. They have to catch the ball and immediately shoot the ball from where they're at. But if you watch any of the best shooters in the world, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, James Harden, all of them have a dip in their shot, meaning when they catch it, they bring it down and then go back up with it. And all these guys are able to get their shot off in the NBA. And in fact, dipping the basketball allows them to be more consistent and a lot of times get their release off quicker than they would if they were to go from here and rigidly bring it right there and then shoot the basketball. They're able to catch it, go right into that dip, quickly, rhythm, boom, up, through and finish. So don't be afraid to dip the basketball. That being said, this needs to be a quick and fluid motion. And the last tip I'll give you guys goes back to one of my previous videos that I did talking about what your actual mindset should be when you catch the basketball. As opposed to thinking triple threat, your mindset has to be shot, shot, shot. Meaning as soon as you catch the basketball, every time you're looking to shoot it, your first look when you catch the ball is eyes up to the rim looking to shoot the basketball. Now, this isn't only going to get you more shot attempts, but it's going to put more pressure on the defense. I'll link to that video above, make sure you check it out. But essentially, if you're thinking shot, as soon as you catch the basketball, you're going to be able to get it off quicker as opposed to you thinking pass, catch, shoot. You gotta make a decision and then decide to shoot the ball. If you're able to catch it and your first thought is shot, then you'll be able to get it off before the defense gets there. But if shooting is your second or third priority when you catch the basketball, you're gonna struggle to get the shot off against tight defense because you just won't have enough time. Make sure your first thought as a shooter is shoot every single time. This doesn't mean you're going to shoot the ball every time, but that means your first look every time is if I'm open, I'm shooting the basketball. So there it is, guys. That's how you can get a quicker release on your jump sh. That's going to allow you to get the ball off against better defenders and shoot the ball consistently at a quicker speed.
