How To Train In-Season (Basketball Tips)

Coach Ethan (Ethan Khoza) explains how basketball players should adjust training during the season: prioritize maintaining and maximizing existing skills rather than heavy offseason development, focus on practicing game-specific situations (e.g., down-screen elbow shots or threes), and fit short targeted sessions around team practices (mornings, after practice for 15–20 minutes, or an hour on days off). He also encourages joining his private training group via the video description and asks viewers to like/subscribe.

What's up, guys? Coach Ethan here. I got a question the other day from a player who was asking me how he should train while he's in season. Obviously, with practices and games, it's a lot harder to get those workouts in when you have team stuff usually every single day. So what should you do to make sure that you stay sharp, but at the same time can bring 100% to all of your team activities? The first thing you need to realize is that there definitely is a difference between the way that you train out of season and the way that you train in season. Typically out of season, you might work on developing a weakness that you have and continuing to cement your strengths. In general, you're focusing on getting better and improving your game when you're in season. A lot of times you're trying to maximize what you already have and maintain your abilities that you've worked on for the entire offseason. So what I mean by this is that you're not going to usually have as many days in the gym where you're working on specific skills that you might not have. You might spend a little bit less time in the gym by yourself, but you want to make sure that you use this time to work on skills that you're going to have to be able to use in games. What I mean by this is that now that you're in season, you want to take a couple days a week and be able to work on game situations. For example, if you guys run a flex offense and you always have an opportunity for a down screen jump shot at the elbow, work on those a lot. If you guys run an offense where you shoot a lot of threes, take some time to work on those shots. You want to figure out where you're going to get shots from in games. And when you're in the gym able to practice by yourself or outside of team activities, you want to work on those specific situations so you can be ready for them in games and play better throughout the season. Now, the other question is when you should get these workouts in. And that kind of is going to depend on your own schedule. For me, back when I was in high school, I used to go in the morning before school and get my work in. But for some people, that might not be possible, but I recommend that you do what you can. So if you can't get to the gym outside of practices and games, before practice, after practice, take some time and get some extra shots up. Especially after practice. See if you have a teammate who wants to get some shots up with you or have an assistant coach who will rebound for you and just spend 15, 20 minutes after practice getting up those game situation shots. You don't need to worry about it looking exactly like your offseason workouts do. Right now we're focusing on maximizing our strengths and keeping keeping ourselves sharp for the game so that we're ready to go and ready to play our best. If you get days off during your week, which most teams do, try and get in the gym for an hour on that day off and get some shots up. In those situations that we talked about, do what you can to get in the gym. You don't have to be in there every day by yourself for an hour like you might be in the off season, but when you have the time, do it and get those extra reps in after practice. And that is going to make all the difference for you and that's going to allow you to not only maintain your skills, but really improve in those situations that we're working on.
