Stop Doing This In Your Workouts (Basketball Tips)

Ethan Khoza says most players drill in isolation instead of practicing game situations that force real decisions. Ball-handling and shooting only transfer to competition when you train reads and reactions. He's launching a 12-week Perimeter Score System program.

For 90% of you guys watching this right now, you're probably training the wrong way, and it's probably costing you a lot of results on the basketball court. In this video, I'm going to explain why you're training wrong, what that looks like, and how you can correct it so that you finally get the results from the time that you put in. Now, if you guys watch my video about how long you should be training for, I'll link it up above. Make sure you check that out. That's point number one. So if you're making that mistake, make sure you definitely fix that. So what is the mistake that most of you guys watching this video right now are making? Well, that mistake is that you're not training for what you want to actually get results in, which is the game. You're training to get better at drills. You're not training to get better at actually playing. What this means is that you work on your skills a lot, but you don't work on the ability to translate into the game. So let's use an example. Let's say you have a toolbox, right? And inside this toolbox you have a hammer, you have a drill, you have a screwdriver. But if you don't know when to use those or how to use those, then you can have all the tools you want in your toolbox. You can have the most expensive toolbox in the world. But if you don't know when you're supposed to use each tool, then it's almost useless if you even have those tools in your toolbox. So the most important thing is that, yes, you need to have those tools, but you also need to know when to use them and how to use them, or else it doesn't matter at all. So how does this translate into basketball? Well, this could mean that you do all the ball handling drills in the world. You're a great ball handler, you have all the moves, yet you don't know how to apply them into the game. So when you get into the game, you're just an average player when it comes to ball handling. This might mean you do all the shooting drills in the world. You work on your form every single day, but when you get into games, you're just an average player because you don't know how to translate it into the games. You don't know when to shoot, you don't know what situation to shoot out of. You might work on your finishing all the time, but when you get into games, you can't finish quite as well because you've been practicing to get better at drills, but now that it's the game you can't translate. You can work on all three of those skills, which you absolutely need. You absolutely need to work on those three skills. But almost more importantly than that, you need to work on how apply them into game situations. Because if you don't do that, then it's like having all those tools in your toolbox but not knowing when to use them. It's almost useless to you. So what does this mean for you? Well, if you're training that way, most likely what that means, you're going into the gym, you're doing, you're finishing drills, you're doing your ball handling drills, and then you're doing some stationary shooting drills. You have to make sure that the drills that you're doing can translate into games. And you're going to do that by putting yourself into situations in practice that mimic games. So for example, your drills have to make sure that you have different sorts of reads off of them. All that means is that you aren't just doing the same exact robotic thing every single time. Because when you get to the game, one of the most important skills to have is the ability to read and react. And that's a skill you have to develop from practice, from playing. But if all your practices are just robotic, do the same thing over and over and over. Don't even have to think about it. Well, when you get into the games and you have to react to things, you're going to be super slow, you're going to be a step behind everybody and you're not going to get the results that you want to have. So a lot of drills that I'll do with my players is we'll go through the same sort of scenario. So maybe it'll be a ball screen. But the first time we're going to work on coming off the ball screen and going into a one drill pull up. And then the next time maybe we'll simulate the defender jumping out the hedge and we'll split the screen, right? Or maybe we'll simulate the defender icing the screen trying to force us to not go over it. And we'll reject the screen and hit a pull up in the mid range again. Maybe next we'll simulate our defender going under and us shooting the three. So now all of a sudden we're working on different reads out of same situation. Because moved into the game, that's the type of things you're gonna have to do. You're gonna have to make different reads Based on what the defense does. That's one example. We'll do the same thing with different drills in the wing to work on attacking the basket, work on beating our defender, but we have to make sure that we add in those different sorts of reads. So when you get into games, you have the ability to react to whatever the defense gives you. We talk about how important it is to be able to finish, to be able to handle the ball, to be able to shoot, but it's equally as important to be able to read and react to the defense. Those four skills are critical and if you' missing one of them, don't let it be read or react. Because if you're missing read or react, those other three skills are going to be almost meaningless to you when you get into games. So now that we've gone into that, I want to tell you guys about something really, really cool that's going to be coming out soon. The perimeter score system is going to be coming up very, very soon. Now this is going to be a 12 week program that is going to do exactly what we talked about in this video. Put you in a game like situations to where you can learn how to read and react and apply those skills that you're going to learn into your game. Of course we're going to work on our finishing, our ball, handling, our shooting, but we're also going to make sure we have that fourth component that read and react. We're going to make sure that we can tie all those three first skills into the games. The best part about this program is that you don't need any of the people to do it with. While also developing your shooting, developing your ball handling and developing your finishing as well as go to moves your ability to attack out of the triple threat. All those things that you need to have as a basketball player, we're going to cover in this program. I'm super excited to get it to you guys. Believe me when I say this is going to be training unlike anything you've ever done before. And also it's going to give you results unlike anything we've seen before.
