The SIMPLE Trick To Get More Shots In Games - Score More Points in Basketball (Basketball Tips)

Ethan Khoza argues scorers should ditch the triple threat mentality and shoot first every time they catch the ball. Facing the rim immediately pressures defenders and creates better passing angles when you need to kick it out.

Just ride me, baby. What's up, guys? Coach Ethan here today I want to talk about why the basketball triple threat is actually a myth. And I'm going to explain to you what you really should do when you catch the ball on offense. Now, for those of you who don't know, triple threat means when you get the ball, you bring it into a position where you can make one of three plays. You can shoot the ball, you can pass the ball, or you can dribble the ball right away. Typically, that means you're going to turn, pivot, and that ball is going to be right in that shooting pocket so you can make one of those three plays. Now, on the surface, this seems right, but actually it's the wrong mentality to have if you want to be a really great player. When you catch the ball, the first thought should not be triple threat. The real triple threat should be shoot, shoot, shoot. That's what you think when you catch the ball. When you catch the ball, you need to grab it, turn, and look like you're going to shoot. Your first thought is, when I catch this ball, I'm shooting it. Now, there's a few reasons that you should do this. First of all, you got to score to win basketball games. A lot of times players pass up shots because they aren't looking to score. But if you want to win and you want to be a great player, you've got to be able to score the basketball. And a lot of times, the most ideal time to score is when you first catch the ball. So if you catch it and immediately look to shoot, a lot of times you'll get open shots that you can hit just because you do it quickly and you're decisive about it. The other thing too is that when you turn to face the basket and shoot, think about what you do there. You get your feet aggressively turned towards the basket, you get your eyes up at the rim, and the defender is put in a difficult situation to where he has to understand that you're looking to shoot the ball. When you turn and get your eyes to the basket, the defender is going to have to react to that. If he doesn't move out and close out to you, you can shoot. If he does and he overexerts himself, you can go buy him. If he jumps again, you can go buy him. That's gonna open up a lot of things for you. If you just get your eyes in the basket and things shot as soon as you get the ball. The other question players might have is, well, what if I catch the ball at the three point line and I'm on a three point shooter. Well you still should be thinking shoot when you catch that ball because again, like I just said, you're gonna get your defender into a pressure filled situation. If you catch the ball in a three point line and immediately look like you're gonna shoot the ball, he's gonna have to make a decision on you. And again it's gonna put the other thing to understand is that when you get your eyes up to the rim on a shot, you can see the entire floor. A lot of times players catch the ball and they don't actually see the whole floor. So even if they're in triple threat, they aren't really able to make a pass because they don't see who's open. But if you catch the ball and you think shoot, shoot, shoot, you turn, get ready to shoot. Your eyes are up at the rim, therefore you can see the entire floor. Now you know if you get there and you don't have your shot but you have a team that is open, you can make that pass as opposed to only having one or two options when you get the ball. Now you're gonn have all three because you think shoot as soon as you catch the ball. This is an incredibly effective mindset to have as a scorer, guys, especially if you can shoot the ball. If you can shoot, you should be looking to do that every time you catch it. Now I'm not saying that you're going to actually shoot the ball every time that you touch it, but if your first look is to do that, you're going to get a lot more looks. You're also going to put the defense in a very tough situation where they understand you're willing to shoot the ball. And a lot of times you're going to want to beat them because they're going to make mistakes and they're not going to be disciplined.
