Ethan Khoza teaches ball handling through pocket pulls, a drill that builds touch and control instead of just pounding the ball. The workout progresses from stationary pulls to the same spot, then mixed spots, exaggerated reaches, exchanges like between-the-legs, and finally moving drills. Most players skip this foundation and jump straight to flashy moves.

When it comes to controlling the basketball, it's about more than just being able to pound the basketball, even though that's what the majority of players spend their time working on. It's also important that we're to manipulate the ball so I can take it and move it to different places and feel comfortable putting the ball where I want it. And if you watch the best ball handlers in the world, you're going to see this ability to manipulate the ball and find that gray area. Obviously we can't carry the ball, but we still have some leeway to be able to move it where we want to move it. So the first thing we're going to do is start stationary. We're going to work on being able to pull that ball to our pocket. We're just going to start off right to the same spot. I'm just repeatedly pulling that ball. Imagine like I have a hoodie jacket and I'm pulling that ball to that pocket there. Now we're doing the same thing, but you're going to mix up your spot where you dribble every time. So I might go there pulling it to my pocket. I want to go somewhere new every time. If that's too easy, you can start to really exaggerate it. So I might really let that ball reach out to the point where it's hard to control it and bring it back. So now we're gonna do the same thing, but this time we're get to an exchange. So off of that pull, I'm gonna go either with a between or behind the back. So there. So now we do the same thing, but we're gonna move in this general area so I have anything there, but I'm mixing in those holes. Now we're gonn but it's going to be on the move so I can go forward with it. So I have full freestyle, but I'm mixing in those pocket pulls.
