This Workout Will Help Make You An Elite Shooter

Ethan Khoza breaks down basketball shooting drills that build elite-level accuracy by adding variability and challenge to your practice. The workout forces you to shoot from different spots and angles, mimicking game conditions where defenders move and space shifts constantly.

You need to start thinking about shooting the same way you think about lifting weights. If you want to get stronger, you have to add weight. If you want to get better at a skill, you have to add challenge that pushes you outside of your comfort zone. So here's some shooting drills you can do with a partner to do just that. First, we start off with a free throw line and we're just changing up our shot pocket so we're kind of moving the ball in a circular motion. Whenever that partner closes out, you're shooting the ball from wherever it's at. So it might come from the side of you, it might come from high, come from low, and we'll back up and do the same thing. For the three point line, we're working on being able to shoot through imperfection and variability. Now we're going to work on that same skill in a little bit more of a game like sense where the closing out defender is going to throw the ball out to the side of the player and they're going to have to catch the ball and get the shot off as that closeout's coming. So this may naturally lead to more of an outside shot pocket, which we just worked on. A very important skill to have if you want to make more game shots. Now they're out on the wing and they're going to wrap the ball around their waist as they're also walking around changing up the way that their feet are. That defender is going to close out and that offensive player has to get the shot off as quick as possible. This one's a little bit weird. That offensive player is going to start by pounding the ball with two hands as hard as they can. And then that defensive player is going to close out and the offense is going to get the shot up as quick as they can. Imagine. Going from playing tough physical defense, boxing out and pulling a rebound, to sprinting down the floor and immediately having to hit a transition 3. We're working on the same skill, but with about 0.5 seconds for the offensive player to flip that switch. Now the offensive players in the freestyle dribbling in place as that defender is walking around them in a circle. The offensive player has one dribble in any direction to get a three pointer off. Every shot is difficult and every shot is contested, which makes it not only more game like because of the variability, but also much more of a challenge. And this is how you truly expand as a shooter. Now we're going pin downs, but we're going sets of 2 for 3 with a made catch. And shoot for it to count. So that offensive player is going to shoot three pin downs. If they make at least two of the three, they're then going to shoot a catch and shoot. And if they make that shot then the set counts. And right here we just played first person to four completed sets and then we finish with a one on one in these pin down situations. So the rules are that the offensive player only gets one dribble. When they catch the ball they can use the screen however they want to, but if they make a shot they then have to make a catch and shoot after for that rep to count. And right here we played first to five and then right here we finished up with catch and shoot shots at all five spots where the goal was to shoot the ball as fast as possible on your release. We also mixed in some one foot threes as well to add an additional layer of challenge to it. If you want to become a better shooter, find ways to push yourself outside of your comfort comfort zone and watch how much better you get.
