If there's one thing that everyone seems to agree on, it's that humanity needs to evolve. Transhumanists and techno-utopians like Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and Sam Altman, they see technology as the solution to everything. According to these guys, the sooner we become machines, the better for humanity. You could call these technologies— AI, nanobots, biotech— material technologies. I think outsourcing our evolution to machines and machine thinking would mean losing everything that's beautiful about being human. There's actually another way to evolve as a humanity, and that's through an expansion of consciousness using conscious technologies. Ancient spiritual traditions like various forms of shamanism, Yogaviddhanta, Buddhism, and the mystical offshoots of Abrahamic traditions like Kabbalah and Sufism, they all offer practices designed to evolve consciousness. You could call these conscious technologies or technologies of liberation and transformation. We desperately need technologies of liberation right now. Although we live in a so-called free society today, we are increasingly not free within our own consciousness. Fear and a lack of discernment dominate our minds and our consciousness today, and I think the situation is taken advantage of by those in power. In our current political system, AI only exacerbates economic disparity disparities and misinformation, and is simply another vector for oppression. Furthermore, our current socioeconomic system is like a giant machine, a machine that rapidly absorbs any attempts to oppose it. AI can be seen as an extension of that machine of control and oppression. So one question I want to ask is whether, in addition to evolving our consciousness with conscious technologies, can we also use the mechanisms of this enormous machine to basically break out of its tendency towards oppression, technology alone cannot alleviate fear or help us to cultivate discernment. On the contrary, without an evolution of consciousness, technology will only increase our fear and confusion. We have seen this already with social media, and it will be no different with AI. So on this channel, I want to contrast the evolution offered by tech bros with that offered by wisdom traditions. And I also want to consider whether technology, and AI in particular, can be repurposed to subvert the very system that it seems to perpetuate. In short, I am exploring how we can evolve humanity and human consciousness instead of outsourcing our evolution to material technology, to the voracious, mindless machine.
