A woman recalls attending WAC and Web Girls meetings in the early internet days. A small group of confident women made her feel she belonged. Later, hundreds of women at Web Girls showed her the power of visible numbers in tech.
One of my first memories of working in the internet industry was, well, one of them is going to my first WAC meeting. And I remember that there were not a lot of women, but the women were strong characters. And I really appreciated seeing them there. Right away I felt like I belonged. And the WAC meetings were great because I was meeting people who had interests in the same areas that I did and we were all creating something new together. But I also remember going to the Web Girls meetings where it was just women and there I was amazed that there were hundreds more women who were doing what I was doing or who were getting into this industry. And so it was very interesting and very important to go to the WAC meetings where I really related to people but also to go to the Web Girls meetings meetings where I just could see this strength in numbers. And so that was great for starting out in this industry to see the strength that we have, that there were women out there also, you know, throughout the whole industry also working in this new and exciting era that was beginning to just start.
