How Mistakes Will Help Your Business Grow - Episode 6

Dan Willis published a livestream with no audio after a Windows update and left it online. The silent video became his third-most-viewed upload, proving that consistent publishing matters more than perfect quality. He kept the mistake up to gather data instead of hiding it.

How's it going, everybody? We are back, and this time I am registering audio. I can see it. There it is, moving. So today is going to be a double whammy. You get episode 5 and 6 merged together into one phenomenal episode. So for those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, yesterday We had some issues with the Windows update happening at the exact same time I was trying to broadcast live, and it was just killing the stream. So what did we do about it? Real simple. I just kept going with it. Afterwards, when I realized there was no audio because the update had killed my mic, I left it because I was interested. I figured, why not give it a shot? All week we've been talking about quantity over quality. So what happens if I stick to my promise of quantity, one video every day, But I put out a video that is total bubkis quality. So a YouTube video that's like this, that's informational, that requires you to hear my voice, that has no audio. How would it perform? And I gotta tell you guys, looking at the analytics, it's really interesting to see how it performed. So out of— Excuse me. Out of all of the videos that we've had on the channel up to now, all of them, currently the video from yesterday with no audio attached to it, And maybe this speaks to how great I am at not delivering a message, but it's the 3rd highest viewed video. After the initial book announcement, the first video from this week that was getting us into this and how this week was gonna work and progress, it's the most viewed video, and there's no audio on it. So, what did I learn from this? Couple takeaways, and this ties into yesterday's message of Are you listening to your audience? Are you getting what they're saying? The message that came in loud and clear from yesterday was this: quantity over quality works. Why? People showed up regardless to at least look at the video. Now the watch time is significantly reduced, it's much less, but there are some people that actually stay tuned in almost 2 minutes into a 5-minute video just to see if the audio is going to come on at some point. What I've learned from this is people do actually just show up when you are creating content on a regular basis like this. Even further, I've learned that if I go into the other channels where I distributed that, I can tell who actually watched the video to engage with it and who didn't. I learned that certain people are in there actually watching the video, making comments, Dan, I watched the whole thing and your audio never kicked in. It's like amazing. And then there are people that just put generic comments like, I think this about what you said. It's like, well, clearly you didn't watch the video. And even that gives me a deeper understanding of the platform. Where am I able to engage effectively with a community that's actually watching the content, and where am I not? And for the ones that I am, great. How do I continue to encourage that group and reach out to them? And for those that are just, you know, watching the video, not engaging, Okay, great. How do I better grab those people with either how I'm distributing the imagery, the thought process behind the copy? How do I pull those people that I'm missing into it? So still, people would say, well, quality's gotta be there. Statistically, I'm seeing that's not the case. I'm seeing quantity is the key. Being committed to delivering quantity over quality, it's amazing. From that, we steamroll into today. What happens when the wheels fall off? So what you've got up till now is what should have been on the video yesterday, the audio you would have heard. For today, we're doing, what do you do when the wheels fall off? What happens when things break down? My answer, as you guys can guess from this video, you roll with it. Don't get upset, don't get frustrated, don't lose your mind over a mistake that happens. You're gonna make mistakes. There's nobody out there that is perfect. Nobody out there that can go an entire day without making a mistake. We do it. We're human. We make mistakes. The beauty of it is there are people out there that are capable of learning from that, and there are people out there that are incapable of learning from that. Which one are you going to be? That's the only real choice you have to make. So I screwed up yesterday. There was no audio on the video. I had 2 choices. I could pull the video, act embarrassed, and break my streak that I'm trying to make of Monday through Saturday videos for a year. Or I can leave the video up, own my mistake, have that accountability, learn from it, and apply it directly back into the channel. Which of the 2 options are you gonna act on? The answer is an obvious one. Excuse my cough. The answer is so obvious. Had I just pulled the video, I would not have had the insights into my audience, into my content that I have today. So this applies to anything that you're doing. It's not just video content creation. It's not audio content creation. It's not even specifically content creation. This is a solid life lesson as far as motivation goes, guys. If you are gonna make a failure— if you're gonna make a failure— if you happen to have a failure, if you make a mistake, it's not the end of the world. Own the mistake. Don't run from it. Don't turn from it. Own it. I screwed up. And then look at it. Analyze it. What did I learn from that mistake? There's always something. There's something you can grab from it. And anybody who takes every single mistake as an opportunity, whether in business or their personal life, goes, what did I learn from this? What can I grasp from it? How can I move forward from this? You're gonna find success. If every mistake you make builds you and makes you stronger, And every success you have builds you and makes you stronger, you're only getting stronger. That's it for today, guys. We are just pumping away at these. I'm having a blast. Today was on time. I've got audio. I can see the mic rolling. I can see no breakdown. I'm improving on the video content. What I need to know from you guys now is we've done a lot this week on quantity versus quality. We've learned those lessons. I'd love to hear from you guys. What kind of videos, what kind of questions You have, it could be business-related, entrepreneurial, it could be, you know, how do I do my marketing? How do you create content? What tools do you use? Where are you using them? Where are you distributing them? These are just some ideas from me, guys, but I'd love to hear what your thoughts are in the comments down below here. If you like this video, here's the standard YouTube spiel, right? Go ahead, click the thumbs up button. Awesome, thank you for that, and share it out with your friends.
