Live as free men in Christ! (How to let go of the burdens of life)

In this devotional teaching, the speaker (Dan Willis) opens with a prayer and reads John 8:31‑47 (ESV), focusing on Jesus’ statement that “the truth will set you free.” He explains that this truth is not a generic or societal notion but the specific revelation of who Jesus is, why He came, and what He accomplished on the cross. The speaker argues that true freedom comes from abiding in Christ’s word, which convicts believers of sin, leads to repentance, and initiates a process of sanctification. He contrasts the freedom offered by Christ with the bondage of sin, judgment, and the false authority of the Pharisees. Throughout, he addresses men specifically, sharing personal struggles (financial hardship, relational issues, fatherhood, business challenges) to illustrate how the gospel’s truth can lift burdens. He repeatedly invites listeners to lay down their sins, seek repentance, and experience the freedom that comes from knowing Christ’s sacrifice has paid the debt. The teaching concludes with a call for prayer requests, offering personal prayer via direct messages, and encourages viewers to reflect on whether the truth has lightened their load and spurred deeper relationship with Christ.

You guys are free. You don't have to be bound by anything. And when we open up John today, we're going to take a look at what that means and how that expresses itself in your walk. Okay, so before we get going here, go ahead and grab your Bible. If you don't have one handy, that's okay. I'm going to be reading from the ESV. I'll read the passage out loud for you guys, but I encourage you guys to try to have a Bible with you when you go through this. Uh, it just— it helps to have it. That tangible Bible in your hand. I find a lot of times when we're breaking down the word, but if you don't have one, that's okay. For those of you guys that do, what we're looking at is John chapter eight. We're going to start around verse thirty one. Okay. So before we get going here, I'm just going to pray real quick. Lord, thank you so much for today. Thank you for the men that are watching this and wrestling through it. I pray for freedom in their lives from whatever it is that they're facing. And as we look at your word today, Lord, we come to understand what that freedom is, where it comes from, what it means. Your name we pray. So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, if you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. They answered him, we are offspring of Abraham, and I have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say you will become free? Jesus answered them, truly, truly, I say to you, Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever, and the Son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are offspring of Abraham, yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father. They answered him, but Abraham is our father. And Jesus said to them, if you were Abraham's children, You would be doing the works Abraham did. But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are doing the works that your father did. They said to him, we were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, even God. Jesus said to them, if God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but of him who sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. You are of the father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell you the truth, you do not believe me. Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God. We're going to stop there for today. Really want to draw us back here, taking a look at that first couple passages of, if you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Okay, that this passage isn't a generic truth. This isn't your truth. This isn't what society says is true. This is the truth. He's speaking very specifically about who he is, who Jesus is, why he came, what he's doing. And knowing that, knowing what that sacrifice looks like, what it means for us, it gives us a freedom that we otherwise wouldn't have. We talked yesterday about, about judgment. If you haven't watched that, you can go back. All of these are in a playlist for you. I'll link it down below. Um, but you can go back and take a look at these other segments. But he's talking about judgment over and over and over again here, and the freedom that we have from that. And that freedom comes from this truth. God sent him for us so that we would be free. Free from what? From sin, from pain, from anguish, from all of them. The Pharisees that are standing here throwing shade at Jesus, saying, we know this, we know that, we come from this, we have all this authority, this position in society, we know the— we're from the right group of people, how dare you tell us? He's going, I am telling you, I am, and I'm telling you because God told me to tell you. And the thing that I'm told to tell you is, unless you can hear these words, unless you can live a life that you understand that this is true, that the promise that Christ gives you is true, you're bound. You're bound. If you can't hear it, you really want to wrestle with that. You really want to wrestle with that. Those that come from the Father can hear this. You can hear this word, and it's gonna It's gonna be this thing where that truth sets you free. This isn't a societal truth. It's not truth and justice movement. It's not, it's not any of those things. It is specifically Jesus, who he was, why he came, and what that accomplishes. And what it accomplishes is this: you have the ability to go to God's word, have it convict you. Okay, it will convict you. It will judge you. And that's okay because you've been judged. And set free. There is a judgment on sin here, and Jesus is going, yes, there is a price to pay. And yes, you as believers, yes, you as Christian men that are struggling and going through hardship and facing hard things, that's okay. Those things happen. It's not okay that the sin is there, but I've paid the price. That's the truth that will set you free. Should you continue to sin? By no means. You should struggle with your sin. You should wrestle with your sin. You should confess your sin. You should repent your sin. But Do that with God. Go to God and realize that what Jesus has done, what Jesus is here to accomplish, what Jesus did accomplish has set you free from that. It's a burden that you don't need to carry. It's a burden that you don't need to let others put onto you and convict you of, which was common with the Pharisees. Pharisees are trying it even here with Jesus of like, we know you, we get to tell you who you are. No, that's not how it works. If you guys are going through a hard time, if you are men that are going through a very difficult phase right now, This is— this should be a huge encouragement to you. This truth sets you free. There's, there's no binding on you. There's no word on you. There's no judgment on you. There's no criticism on you except that which comes from God. And if you hear these things and it spurs you to a place of repentance, it spurs you to a place of moving forward, walking alongside, understanding you're going to commit wrong, there's sin in your life, but it's a process of sanctification. You're going to get better. You're going You're gonna get better. You're gonna get better. You're gonna grow. You're gonna learn. You're gonna get closer and closer in your relationship to Christ. There's so much blessing here, and there's so much freedom in that. So if you're struggling today, if you're having a really hard time, my heart goes out to you. It does. And believe me when I say I understand. I've been through those moments. I've been through those those hard times. I've been broke. I've had I've had Relational problems. I, I've struggled as a father, as a business owner. I've struggled as a friend. Those things are there. They're hard. They're not easy. The relationships that we as men go through— and this is for you men very specifically, I want you to hear this— this sets you free. If you're burdened by something, if it's weighing you down, go to God and realize those sins in your own life, you're set free. You don't need to carry them. They don't define you. You get to move forward. You get to be who it is that God wants you to be, and you get to be in that relationship. So whatever it is, lay it down. If you have something that I can pray for you guys for, I really want to get back to praying for for men that are in need. And if you have a prayer request, feel free to throw it out there. If you're not comfortable doing that directly, all my socials are there. You can DM me. I'm more than happy to pray for the things that need to be prayed for, and I'm more than happy to lift those up. I hope this is helpful to you guys, and I really do want to hear what, what do you guys think about this, this statement here that truth will set you free? What do you guys think about that freedom that comes from knowing every debt that needs to be paid has been paid? That truth will set you free. Does it lighten your load a little bit, or does it continue to be something that you need to wrestle through? Hopefully, hopefully it's the one that you feel a little bit lighter today after having heard that, and I hope that freedom is something that spurs you to get to know Christ more and more. I'll catch you guys with the next chapter, uh, probably tomorrow. Take it easy.
