Spend Money to Make Money is a LIE

In this solo‑hosted YouTube video, Dan Willis challenges the common belief that you must spend money to make money. He argues that entrepreneurs can launch a service‑based or low‑cost product business with virtually no capital by leveraging existing skills, free resources, and creative arbitrage. Willis then outlines the three primary levers of business growth—quality, speed (frequency of output), and money—explaining how each can drive sales and why money, while not required to start, becomes a decisive advantage when scaling. He uses examples from YouTube content creation and everyday service gigs to illustrate how higher output frequency and superior quality attract more customers. Willis advises new founders to begin as a side‑hustle, commit to at least one year, and reinvest any early earnings back into the business rather than taking personal profit. He emphasizes that initial growth should rely on output and quality, with money later used for advertising, promotions, and competitive advantages. The video concludes with practical takeaways: you don’t need upfront cash to start, you should focus on output and quality first, and you can fund growth from the business itself before eventually taking a personal cut.

You've got to spend money to make money. Or do you? Stick around, guys. I'm going to help you figure this out. Okay. First off, you got to spend money to make money. Now, for most folks, this has come across as somewhat of a barrier to becoming an entrepreneur. That idea that if you have no capital, you can't create capital. So it's difficult to get started as an entrepreneur because you have to have a year's salary saved or 5 years' salary saved, or you've got to have enough money to build— whatever the excuses are, money to make money acts as a barrier. And so for the sake of getting this video started, I want to start with this concept being fake. It's a lie. It's not true. Do you have to spend money to make money? No. That's not true. When you start as a business, you can start with a service, you can start with a product that you can make around the house that you've got stuff out of, you can pick up free stuff off of online, you can do arbitrage, you can do scrap heaps, you can— there's all kinds of stuff that you can do for free that you don't need money for. Okay guys, so is it possible to start a business from scratch with no money, no capital, and create something of profit? Yes, absolutely, it's possible. It is possible for you to go out there today, start a business with no money, no capital, and create funds from it. I promise you it's possible. People have done it. Massive empires may not have been built on the concept, but a service-based business is really simple to get started. Something as simple as— my daughter's in the other room right now, she can play piano. She found a little girl that didn't know how to play piano and She's getting paid a small amount of money to do that. Bam! Business from nothing, cost her nothing. She has a skill, she uses it, the end. Okay? Simple example. Do you need money to make money? The simple answer is no. But is that where we stop for today? Mm-mm. Okay, spend money to make money, guys. This is all about growth as a business owner, and that's what we're looking at, okay? And growth in a business takes one of 3 things. Quality, speed, or money. Okay, those are true. Do you need money? Do you need money to make money? No. If you have money, can you make money faster? Yes. Each of those 3 things acts as a platform to help you build your business. So if you want to— if we're talking speed, take a look at this YouTube channel. There's lots of people out there that want to start a YouTube channel. It's something that a lot of people have that goal to. They go out there and they start making videos. How often do you see a new channel making a video? Once a week? Once a month? Let's say you really— you follow the videos, you follow the advice that I give and other people give, and you put out 3 videos a week. Which of these videos, which of these channels is gonna have more success in the long term? Is it gonna be the guy that puts out a video every day? And I use guy unisex manner, guys, that's ladies and men. If you guys put up a video a day on your channel, are you more likely to succeed than someone who puts it out maybe one a week? Probably, right? Now let's add into that, okay? So you've got 2 people side by side. We've determined that probably if you put out more videos more frequently, you're gonna have more success. Same thing with business, right? If you're out there and you're, you're petitioning people with your service or your product more often, you're more likely to see more conversions, right? If you offer people your service or product more often, you're going to see more sales. That's just the reality of it, okay? And that's— I'm not talking marketing, I'm talking asking people. Go door to door, right? Simple things like that, using your existing Facebook and social media networks. The more people that you get eyes on what you're doing, the more likely you are to succeed because you have more opportunities for people to see what you're up to. Now let's throw Quality on top of that, right? So you've got 2 people putting out videos every day. One person is a guy like me, just a regular run-of-the-mill guy. The other guy is like Peter McKinnon, who's got his Photoshop and his After Effects, and he knows how to use a camera and video and sound recording and editing. And which of the 2 is going to be better? Who's going to have the more successful business? It's pretty plain, right? Peter McKinnon's going to blow me out of the water. Why? Because the quality far exceeds. And this is true of most people out there in business. If you have a higher quality service or product, chances are you're gonna see more sales, right? It's just the way it works. It's the way it's gonna play out. If you've got a higher quality product, you're gonna see more sales. So that tackles speed, that tackles quality. Now let's take 2 guys that put out videos daily, okay? Both of them have equal skill levels. So let's say like Peter McKinnon and Casey Neistat, okay? And they're both putting out videos daily, and one of them is broke, and the other one has the money to promote with ads, to promote contests, to buy stuff and give it away, which of those 2 is going to succeed? Clearly the guy that has the money, right? So are there best practices that can come first before the money hits? Yes. How frequently are you out there giving people your service, giving your product, right? That's first and foremost. Is the quality of your product or service right up there? If yes, then great, that's there. Those are the 2 things that you can control before money, okay? But it is eventually going to come down to money. Can you afford to do things that the competitor can't afford to do? There's a reason why Coke, there's a reason why McDonald's, there's a reason why Nike stay number one. It's because they pour obscene amounts of money into their advertising. Their products for the most part are being labeled poison these days and they still stay number one Because they've got the money to pour into their advertising and succeed. So, do you need money to make money? The simple answer that I want to give people getting started as entrepreneurs is no. In no way do you need money to make money. The more advanced question to that is, do you need money to make money? Yes, because those who have the money to invest into their business, those who have the money to invest into advertising, into marketing, into giveaways and promotions, they are gonna have a much higher success rate than someone who doesn't have those assets available to them. Okay guys, so long and short, is it true? No. As you're getting started right off the bat, it's not true. You can start a business. It won't be a massive business, but it will be a business that you can get started at no cost. You don't need to spend money to make money. As you grow though, and as you scale, do you need to spend money to make money? Yes, you do. Okay, the last thing I want to give you guys is, and it's a huge caveat that I feel I need to add in here, for those of you that have said, okay, he says as I'm growing I need to spend money to make money, am I supposed to be saving capital, putting it aside? The most successful advice that I've heard is this, guys: start your business as a side hustle. Okay, and I've got videos in the past about side hustles. You can look them up, they're there for you. But start your business as a side hustle and commit to 1 year. Okay, will you make money in that first year? I hope so, I really do. This channel has already started making money. There's been some paid placements, there's been some, some people that are supporting the network through Patreon and other things. So the reality is this, guys, this channel has already made money, but that money goes right back into the channel for the first year. I'm committed to that. You as a business owner, that's where you should spend your money in the first year. Do you need money? Do you need to spend money to make money? No. But if you do make money in that first year, I highly recommend you reinvest it back into the business and push it as a side hustle for that first year. So for me and this channel, guys, any support that comes in, anybody that is able to make money come my way for this channel, the reality is I've got a job outside of this. I'm a consultant. I have work daily that comes into my house that is completely removed from this YouTube channel. This is a side hustle. Any money the channel brings in goes directly back into the channel. So it's gonna be new gear, new mics, new opportunities. Maybe I'll travel, maybe I'll do some interviews, maybe I'll promote it using ads. But any money this brings in goes right back into the channel. Okay guys, that's how I recommend you use money to make money. It doesn't always have to be out of pocket. I recommend for the first couple years to see the growth in your business, you take it from the business, put it back into the business. Eventually what you're gonna see is that return from doing that effectively, and that will get you more money to play with, right? Eventually down the road, what you hopefully want to see is the money that the business is pulling in, you can reinvest back into the business and then start taking little bits off the top for yourself. And eventually you'll end up full-time. I'll do another video on how you can spend money effectively as a small business in order to see that growth, and a lot of it has to do with your digital marketing. But for today, guys, those are the answers I want to give you. At basic bare-bones level, do you need to spend money to make money? No. As you get growing a little bigger and you're looking to grow and compete with some bigger fish, do you need to spend money to make money? It helps. It does. Last but not least, if you're looking to spend money to make money, does it need to come out of pocket? No. Use your business to fuel your business at first. Okay, guys? So if you're not Daddy Warbucks, you're not sitting on a fortune, you haven't won the lottery, No problem. What you want to do though is you want to make sure that your focus is on growing the business and you can commit the funds back into the business for the first year. That is it for today though, ladies and gentlemen. Hopefully this was helpful to you. Question of the day is, do you need to spend money to make money? I'd love to hear. Let me know in the questions or in the comments down below. Again, if you haven't subscribed to the channel, click the subscribe button, the little bell, and I will catch you Monday with another video. See you then.
