What is your Youtube Subscriber Goal?

Dan Willis argues that your YouTube subscriber goal should match what you actually want, not some arbitrary number. He values one viewer over millions and says creators who obsess over subscriber counts miss the point: define success first, then engage authentically with the people who show up.

So if you're new to the channel, click that subscribe button down there and the little bell. But today what we're talking about is your YouTube channel and how many subscribers you need to be successful. So if you're somebody that's out there that's been struggling to get your YouTube channel growing, you're trying to figure things out, stick around, I'm gonna give you the reality How many subs you need to find some success on this channel. Let's go. First up, guys, the answer to this one, like many, is not simple. It can be 1. That's the total number of subscribers you need to be successful on YouTube. It could be 15 million. It's really a matter of what are your priorities? What do you see as something that you absolutely need to achieve with your YouTube channel? Now, if you're somebody who's out there who's looking to make a full-time living on YouTube and you expect your AdSense to be the sole source of income, or your affiliate marketing or whatever, you want your YouTube channel to be the place that's pumping, the reality is you're gonna need a whole heck of a lot more subscribers than not. Okay, now if the reverse is true and you're looking to just engage with the community, you're looking to get a message out there, then your subscriber base changes quite a bit. So the first thing that we need to do to understand how many subscribers you need to be successful on YouTube is this: we need to understand whether or not you have a clearly defined target and goal. How are you defining your own success on YouTube? Is your success being defined with something very simple like you want to get a message out there, or is your success going to be defined by a monetary value? How much money can your YouTube channel make? Make sure you guys have that locked down. Once you know that, we can move to the next step. Let's go. Okay, so you've got it figured out, and whether it's you know the the monetary value and you need as many eyes on the prize as possible, or you know you've got a message out there that you want to get out there, or a skill out there that you want to teach people, great. I I just want to throw this out there for my channel. My personal goal was to help one business this year, and I I've already been told you guys have been amazing. The people that have subbed to the channel. People that I know from outside of this on other social networks, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook. Amazing to see how many small businesses have already been helped, how many entrepreneurs have already been helped with this channel. So for me, how many subscribers do I need to be successful? Well, technically I don't need one more. Technically, the subscribers that I already had were of enough value to me that this channel is a success. So hooray, I can shut it down. No, not really, I'll keep going. But Really guys, the number that you set for subs is important to your goal for sure. The thing that you need to consider though before you consider your subscriber base is your viewer base, okay? And this is one that kills me when I see a small channel, medium channel that isn't able to really appreciate the views that they already have, okay? So let's say you, you're new to YouTube, you've got 1,000 or less subscribers because I can't really speak to 10,000 or less. I'm not really there yet. I'm still really in that 1,000 zone, even though I'm at about 1,300. That's still the 1,000 zone for me. So that's where I'm living. That's as far as I wanna throw advice until I get further. But what I will tell you is, in the 2 months that I've been at this, we're coming up on a full 2 months here, the full 2 months that I've been at this, what I've come to realize is, if you can't value 1 viewer, okay? So you get 1 viewer, and I'm talking not your mom, your sister, your brother. I'm talking one viewer, one legitimate person you've never met before who's watched your video. If that's not of value to you as a small creator, you're missing the boat. And that one viewer, if you don't cherish them, if you don't appreciate that one other person watched your video, I promise you this, that one viewer is going to feel that vibe on your content and is never going to subscribe to your channel. Okay, it's a reality. If you can't appreciate one viewer, you can't appreciate them enough to create content for them, you can't appreciate it enough to get them to subscribe to you. Okay, next up, 1 subscriber. How many subscribers do you guys have? 1, 2, 5, 10? Don't be upset or frustrated with where you're at. And guys, I can't stress this enough, this is a best practice that I have been throwing out on this channel since day 1. You gotta love the process, you can't love the metrics. Okay, the metrics reveal how much you love the process, not the other way around. Okay, the process shouldn't reveal how much you love your metrics. Oh, I'm only gonna make good content because I've got 15 million subscribers. You see how that's completely backwards, right? No, you go, for my 100 subscribers, 500 subscribers, 1,000 subscribers, however many you have, I'm gonna create the best content I can possibly create for those subscribers. Here's what happens when you shift that paradigm to loving the process and valuing the one viewer, the one subscriber. When you're able to shift that mindset, when you're able to really focus in and go, okay, how do I create the best content for the people that are watching my videos right here, right now? How do I go about doing that? When that's your mindset, when that's what's happening, all of a sudden this nutty thing's gonna happen. Those people that are currently watching are gonna feel valued. They're gonna feel appreciated. And what happens when people show up, get content that's relevant to them, feel like they're a part of a community, and are feeling like they're being listened to at the very least, or they feel like they're contributing to what's going on with your video content? I promise you, those people are going to hit that sub button. It's going to happen. Maybe not floods and floods and floods of them, but you're going to start to see people slowly hitting that sub button. You'll see people comment all of a sudden, maybe one comment first, maybe 2, 3, or 4. Make sure that you're engaging with those comments. But the more you make people feel valued on your channel— and I'm not talking do it for the sake of making them feel valued so you can get the numbers. Again, love the process, love that you're building a community. I get so pumped when I bust out my phone and I see all these comments on the latest video. It gets me psyched. I head to the office and And I just sit down and I reply to every comment. Unless you're a spammer who's saying, sub to my channel, I'll sub to yours. Sub for sub gets deleted. But if you're somebody who's genuinely contributing to this community, every comment, every comment I will reply to. And that's part of the game. Cherish every comment, every like, every follow, every subscribe, every share, share. Just, Enjoy it. Love it. Love this community. Love what love what you're doing out there, and realize that everyone is enough to get you there. Now, this is the last part, guys, and this is going to be the final caveat that I'm going to give you on this topic. If you want to be that fifteen million channel, and again, I try not to speak to this because I haven't been there. I don't know what that's about. I don't have my two hundred fifty k sub. I don't have my hundred k sub. I don't have my ten k sub. I can't really speak to it, but what I've seen is this: the people who are able to appreciate the one subscriber and know what it means to create quality content for one subscriber will very quickly learn what it means to create content for 100, to create it for 1,000, so on and so forth. You look at the success stories on YouTube from guys like Peter McKinnon that started at nothing, built their channel up in under a year to over a million subs. How does he do it? He created amazing content from go all the way through to the end. He showed the appreciation for the one and was able to continue that all the way through to the million, okay? So there's no person who's at a million subs who didn't show their appreciation for the one. I promise you this. It didn't happen. Even guys that are just getting started and their channels are booming— Will Smith starts a vlog on YouTube. No surprise he's up to 250,000 subscribers. He's a big name, he's a big guy, he does that. That does not mean he doesn't show the appreciation and value for creating quality content to the one. He started just like the rest of us, one guy, one video, no subscribers, and it grew, okay? Appreciate your community, create a community. Forget the numbers and realize the value of one sub. So, How many subscribers do you need in order to make your YouTube channel of value? If your answer is any more than one, I want you to pause and really think about what you're doing here and why. Okay, even if you're looking to be the 15 million dollar— uh, 15 million person subscriber that's bringing in dollars on his channel, you want to make sure that you're still valuing the one. You have to learn how to value one person, guys. Question of the day is Do you agree? Do you think you need to be focusing on 15 million people, or do you have to focus on the one person? I'm never claiming that I'm perfect, guys, that I know everything, so I'd love to hear your feedback. Let me know down in the comments below, and if you guys could share this out to your friends and family that might enjoy the channel, hit that subscribe button, and I will see you guys tomorrow with another great video. Catch you then.
