Awesome. after you watch it, all right? But today, what are we talking about? Sales reps. What do you look for when you're seeking out a sales rep for your business? And what kind of character traits, skills, and abilities do you want in your sales rep? Now, we know there's a lot of shysters out there, so this is here to help you as a business owner and an entrepreneur actually track down a sales rep that is worthwhile. Let's go. First up, guys, what you are looking for in a sales rep is largely What have you done? And I know this frustrates a lot of people that are new to sales, that are looking to become more efficient, but the reality is this: no company wants to hire somebody that claims they can sell something when they've got no evidence that they've ever sold anything before, right? It'd be like you going to a doctor, heart surgeon, who's saying, okay, well, I'd like to do open heart surgery on you. You go, great, how many open heart surgeries have you done? And he says, none on a live body. All on corpses. I haven't really done live surgery on an open heart yet. Are you feeling super comfortable about that? Probably not. Now, some of you may say that's extreme, but the reality is, our businesses are often our lifeline, and it shouldn't be treated with any less respect. So when people are selecting a sales rep for their business, what they're saying is, you are a lifeline for us, you feed life into our business, and we want to make sure that we have a sales rep that has proven experience. So experience, number one key to selecting an effective sales rep is check their experience. Who have you worked for before? Where have you gone? What have you done? Now, this is nothing new, guys. This is the age-old resume thing, but I'm not asking for you to reach out for resumes for sales reps. What I'm looking for is show me your LinkedIn profile, show me recommendations from employers, show me specific projects that you worked on, and the results that you were able to achieve. Now, a lot of the time sales reps will have nondisclosure, so they can't say specifically what they did or what the specific results were. But for most people out there that have the internet, pretty much everybody these days, if you ask a sales rep, what projects did you work on for which company, you'll be able to actually go back and find those ad campaigns. You'll be able to take a look and see what they did and see how the business has done since. If you see a business that has grown monumentally since the time that those people were sales reps, guaranteed that had some effect from their sales portfolio. If you see a business that struggled for a couple of years, it seems they went on a downtick after that sales rep, chances are the experience doesn't match the mold, right? So again, you're gauging experience not by resume lines, but by actual performance. Look at the past businesses they worked for, look at the time that those sales reps worked with those businesses, and see if you can gauge what kind of success the business as a whole had, and often that can be attributed largely to how well the sales team was working for that business. Okay, experience proven through recommendation and proof of execution, right? That's what we're looking for. Next up, guys, you're looking for somebody that's not looking for a paycheck, but you're looking for somebody that is looking for the opportunity. They love the process, they love what they do, they love being in sales. Now, this can be very difficult to weed out, but the reality is a great way to go about this is having a multiple-stage selection process. Now, this is, again, is nothing new for an HR department. It's nothing new for hiring to suggest that you have a multiple-stage hiring process. However, in most multiple-stage hiring processes, what you have is you've got an introductory interview where you get a feel for the person. Then you've got something that leads to a more detailed description of the job. And finally, you've narrowed it down to a select few candidates, and you're just trying to get a better feel for the person. In reality, what you should see out of a salesperson on the very first interview in a multi-stage hiring process. It's your first meeting, don't even treat it as an interview. Literally, pour a cup of coffee, this is what you need, pour a cup of coffee, sit there, and talk to the person for 30 minutes. That's it. That's the whole first process. When you're selecting a sales rep, the whole first process is sit down for a cup of coffee. Get a feeling for the person's personality, their comfort in being able to speak, their ability to engage. To take control of a conversation, you don't have to do anything, really. All you have to do is show up with your cup of coffee, sit back, and enjoy a conversation with somebody. At the end of your 30-minute conversation, you are gonna have a very keen grasp on how sociable the person is, how genuine they can be, how open they are, and their ability to take control of a conversation, and not do so in a forceful way, but in an engaging manner. These are such key traits for a sales rep. Their ability to be comfortable in a conversation with somebody, while at the same time having the ability to direct a conversation and have the authority to guide that conversation without being forceful. It's a really simple process that a lot of people miss out in the multi-stage hiring, right? If they can't get past a half hour of coffee without any other reasoning other than they're interested in maybe the job, the reality is this, guys, a sales rep that can't hold a conversation with somebody for 30 minutes, isn't somebody you're necessarily wanting to hire on. Being a sales rep is all about creating that engagement, having the ability for somebody to look at someone, have that one-on-one conversation, and being able to guide a conversation, guide a person in a direction that you want to go right now. For a coffee with no direction, you allow a salesperson to create that direction, to create that conversation, and you just get to go along for the ride. This eliminates a lot of the stress and a lot of the hassle. Seeking out a sales rep, because literally all you have to do is enjoy a cup of coffee. All right. All right, guys, you've gauged by now whether a sales rep is capable of delivering. You've seen their experience in the past, you know what they've done, you've seen the proof of it, you've had the recommendations from people that have seen them do it, right. Next up, you know that people have the ability to have a conversation, sit down, have a cup of coffee, they're able to create one-on-one relationships, they're able to have conversations and create appeal and direction through their conversations. The last thing and the most vital thing with a sales rep is ask them what they are looking for in their position, in their role. What you are looking for in a powerful sales rep is somebody that talks more about the process, the environment, and the culture than they are about the dollars and the cents at the end of the day. Now, I'm not opposed to sales guys being about the money because sales is about the money. But you don't want somebody that focuses on sales. And we've talked about this with YouTube, we've talked about this with digital marketing. The core aspect to any good successful business is not a focus on the sales, but the process, right? If you're talking to somebody in sales that is looking for an engaging culture, they like the dynamic, they want to engage with people's ideas, they like to problem solve, they like to seek out new people in new ways, they like to attend conferences. This is a sales rep that you're looking for. Somebody that can execute, somebody that is key on having conversations and has a forceful demeanor that they're able to engage and guide conversations. And even further, they're more interested in the process than the dollars. That's who you want in a sales guy. If right out the gate, when you start asking people what they're looking for in a sales position with you, if they're saying, I'm looking for the dollar, I want a salary of $80,000 plus commission plus benefits plus— wrong answer. What you're looking for is somebody that's hungry and loves the process. When you're able to do this, when you're able to narrow it down and remove the candidates that are more focused on the dollars than they are on the process, what you're going to have are some genuine, Effective salespeople, people that understand, people especially in sales and marketing that understand the process is the key and not the dollars and cents of things. Those are the ones you want to hold on to. All right. So when you're looking for a powerful sales rep, keep your ears peaked for what are you looking for in this? What are you looking for in this role? What are you looking for in this job? What are you looking for in this position? And if they get back to you with salary, commission rates, benefits, stop, red flag, large red flag. If they get back to you about the dynamic, the team, and the client, that's somebody to go deeper with. That's somebody to look for. And that's a powerful sales rep. They understand the value of a sales rep lies not in the dollars and cents that they're going to earn. It lies in the community that's built around them to help engage and grow. All right, guys, that's it. I hope that helps you figure out a little bit more about what to do as a business, as an entrepreneur, to select a sales rep. If you are a sales rep, great.
