What should I do with my life?

Dan Willis walks through a four-stage framework for finding purposeful work: list activities you'd do for free, research how people monetize them, assess your skill gaps, then map concrete steps from where you are now to where you want to be. Put the plan somewhere you see it every day.

I put videos up Monday through Saturday about business, online business, being an entrepreneur, and I really, really just love how much this community has grown over the past 2 months. We're seeing a lot more engagement, and thank you so much to all of you guys that are new subscribers. Really, really love having you guys around. Make sure you stick around at the end, always get the question of the day. But for today, what we're looking at is what should I do with my life? For some of you guys out there, this question can be a little more difficult than it seems at first. And we all know that there's some pretty standard ways that people look at this of, well, there's the promise where you, you, you know, you wake up every morning and you do what you're passionate about and you die a happy man. And then there's the people that find some happiness and stability. So the people that go get the job and they work it for 40 years to retire and golf for the rest of their days. There's lots of different potential answers. To what should I do with my life? And I really wanted to help you guys just kind of wrestle with this and sort through it, especially with millennials. I come across so many millennials that are lost. They're working dead-end jobs. They hate their days. They hate their nights. They can't figure out what they want to do with their life. Stick around. Let's wrestle with this, figure it out so you can start heading in a positive direction. Let's go! Okay guys, so first up is this. There's an age-old guidance counselor method of stop and look at your life. Imagine for a moment, you know, crazy old uncle dies, you get the Scooby-Doo thing where somebody shows up and says, you've won $10 million, you can do whatever you want the rest of your days. What would you do? And whatever you answer, that should be what you head off and do. I think this is a little bit corny because at times you're going to look at this and there are certain things that you would do, but you may not necessarily actually want to do those long-term. But ultimately, I feel that this practice is a good starting point for creating a list of a couple ideas. Okay, so you guys, again, you know how fond I am of these Post-it notes right here. These bad boys are a blessing to every business owner and entrepreneur out there. If you don't have some, get some. What I recommend is this, guys. Answer that question with a couple different answers, 3 or 4 different answers. If you didn't have to work for money, it was taken care of, all of your needs were provided for, you're stinking rich, what would you do with your time? What is your passion? What is, what is the thing that you would go after? What are 2 or 3 of those things? List those down and hammer those out. That's the first step, okay? And I'm not telling you to put all your eggs in one basket on this and say, Well, if I never had to work again, I would just sit on a beach all day. Okay, well great. Throw a couple of ideas down there. Have something to spitball with and play around with, okay? Now let's go to the next step. Okay, so you've got your list here, right? And I'll give you guys my list. It's no trade secret, okay? So for me, I would be happy if I could speak publicly, if I could encourage small business owners, if I could encourage people to leave their work and head into something. I essentially would just love to talk. If this was me, I would love to talk, okay? And there's a bunch of different ways to do it. Obviously YouTube is one of them, speaking at conferences, writing a book, you know, podcast, Twitch, you name it. There's so many different avenues to doing it. But that's the next step here, guys. I want you to look at that list that you laid down. Here are some things that I, I'm passionate about, that I love, that if I didn't have anything blocking my way, I'd I would head towards them and do those things. Now that you have that list, I really want you to hammer down, okay, so these are the things that I love, X, Y, and Z. What are some ways that I can do that professionally? What are some ways that I can go towards that? So I love playing around with cameras. Like, oh great, I love cameras. What can I do with cameras? Well, I can go on Flickr, or I could be a photographer, or I could go get a degree and work for MTV. Whatever it may be, guys, write down 3 or 4 different ways that you could see people making money with that. I'm not talking about you, I'm talking about people in general. How do people make money doing those things? So whether it's with the camera and there's a bunch of different things that way, whether it's speaking like I suggested with a bunch of different examples, maybe it is even lying on the beach and you want to be a travel reviewer or a travel blogger, something of that nature. There are possibilities of people out there making money doing everything. So take the time to look at your, your passions, look at the things that you are excited about, and see how people are already out there earning money on it. Okay, so that should give you a solid list of about— if you had the XYZ, if you had 3 different passions that you had and you find 4 different careers or jobs or ways that people make money doing those things, great. Have that list of 12 things ready to go as we head into the next step. So what you've done now is you've identified the things that you're passionate about, that you want to do, the things that you love, that just warm up your heart. You get excited, you're thrilled about it, you could wake up every day of the week and go do it. Okay, great, you've got those, they're locked down, you're ready to roll. Now you're looking at other people that have the skills, have the abilities already, and are currently getting paid to do those things, right? Now what you need to do, and this is the hard part, okay, give yourself an honest examination of Where am I today? Okay, so let's pick one of the examples. We'll pick, let's say, the travel blogger. Okay, so you want to be a travel blogger, but you've got no experience doing it. You don't know what it looks like. You don't know how you have to get there. You've never done any blogging before. You've never done any filming before. You've never even traveled really before. You just know that you want to go there and do that. I'm not gonna say, well, because you've got no skills in it, don't go do it. I'm actually going to encourage you to go the other way with it. If this is something that you're going to love no matter what, day in, day out, you're willing to pump, you're willing to grind, you're willing to do it, great. My encouragement then, instead of don't go do it because you're not skilled to do it, is how do you acquire the skills to do that thing? Okay, now nobody likes their day job, that, that grind job that you hate, you've got to hustle at. Thankfully, I escaped mine years and years ago when I was stuck Working in management, I just hated it. Right now, I get to do this. I get to be consultant from my home and speak to people, inspire people, engage people online. I love what I do now, but I had to work that job initially to get to where I am today. I got to where I am today because I had a vision of this is the direction I wanted to go in. I knew that I didn't want this. I knew that I wanted this, and I knew that I had to put a line from here to here. To get to where I wanted to go. For you guys, I'm asking you to do the same. Nail down what you love, what you're passionate about. Figure out ways that people make money to do that, and then draw that line. Point A to point B, draw that line. How do I take who I am currently to get him where— for me it's a him, for you it might be a her— get to where I wanna go? And then draw those steps out, guys. Nail it down. I've gotta do this, this, this, this, this. Great. If you've got a list of things that you've got to do to knock off, that list is super, super important. So you made a couple lists. You've got your 3 lists of what is it that you like, what are you passionate about, what would you love to do. Your next list is how do people make money doing that currently. Now the list you have is I've picked one of those things, one of those jobs, one of those professions, and to get from here to there, I need to do this, this, this, this. Doesn't matter how many steps that one takes. Could be 10, could be 2. Doesn't matter. Make that list. Let's go. Last step. Each of those things you have on that list, those actionables— I have to do this, I have to do this, I have to do this— put a date next to them. Doesn't matter. Doesn't have to be, uh, reasonable. Be as outlandish as you possibly can with it. This date, this will be done by. This date, this will be done by. This date, this will be done by. I want you to take that list, okay? And whether you've got to go into Staples, whether you've got to go into— maybe you don't have Staples where you are. Go into any place that will print out a wall-sized poster, okay guys? So we're talking something that is large enough that no matter what, when you walk in the office, you see it. Maybe something like this. Here, look. See that Captain America thing? About that size, right? Something that big. That when you walk into your office, you see it. When you walk into your bedroom, when you walk into your living room, heck, hang it behind your TV, somewhere visible, that list with your dates. The reason why you want this list with dates is one, it holds you accountable, gives you a goal and a deadline. I need a camera to be a travel blogger. Great, so you're gonna work for the next 3 weeks or next month or next 2 months with the only thing you're looking to spend your extra income on that camera. That focus allows you to start knocking things off this list and achieving the things that you hope to achieve. It's such a powerful tool to have that list of here are the steps I need to take to get where I want to go. This is my focus and where I'm going. I highly recommend you have that poster that you get printed off either up in your office or up near your TV, wherever you get distracted, whatever you go do. So whether it's your Netflix, your smartphone, whatever, make it your smartphone wallpaper, whatever you can do to keep this list top of mind. So you're regularly looking at, What do I have to do next? What is my next step? And I'll tell you guys, like, if you look at my wall in my office here, you'll see it. There's not many Post-its left up there now because I've been knocking these things off, but each of those has a clear breakdown of these are things you need to do this year in order to get to where you want to go. I, I'm telling you this, guys, not because this is something I haven't done. This is an age-old practice. You will not hit a target you are not aiming for. Know where you want to go, follow your passion, absolutely. But create real-world steps. Don't let it be some arbitrary, figurative, magical thing. Be honest with yourselves. This is where I honestly am, this is honestly where I want to go, these are the steps I need to make it happen, I'm putting dates on those, and I'm convicted that I'm gonna hit those dates. That is it for today, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you so much for watching. I know this was a little bit of a longer video. I hope you enjoyed it.
