Youtube Upgrade Time

Dan Willis upgraded his YouTube setup for episode 75, buying a used Canon EOS Rebel T4i, Rode microphone, and tripods from Facebook Marketplace instead of Amazon. He chose the camera for its autofocus and flip screen, and plans to use the gear for the next 200 to 300 videos.

It's time to take Millennial Motivator to the next level. Camera gear day, super excited. Stick around, check out what we grabbed. Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I'm Dan of millennialmotivator.ca, helping you learn how to create, engage, and inspire. If you're new to the channel, click that subscribe button down there, little bell. You'll get a notification when my next video goes live, but I put videos up Monday through Saturday all about business, Being an entrepreneur, using the internet to make your lifestyle the way that you want it to be. Today though, guys, I am really, really, really, really excited. Today we are talking about getting new camera gear, new equipment, a whole new YouTube setup for this channel. It's been a long time coming. For those of you that have been watching, you know that I've just been using an old webcam that I've got for my computer and my phone whenever I need to. And that's been great up to this point, but I've decided it's time to make the investment, really double down on the channel, start bringing you guys better quality content, and it had to happen eventually. So today we're going to take a look at how that happens. I want to walk you guys through the process a little bit of how I found it, how I worked through it, how I made it fit to my budget, and then of course the reveal of what we grabbed to help build this channel up, getting ready for tomorrow's 75th episode. That's right, 75 episodes since the end of December to right now. We've pumped out 75 videos. So this is a bit of a celebration, a day early, but we'll check it out tomorrow. The new one will be— the new video, the 75th video, will be shot on the new camera gear setup. So I'm super excited. Let's check it out. How do you find it? How— what is it? And let's celebrate. All right guys, so what I did was I knew that I had a certain budget that I wanted to hit. I did give Amazon a shot, tried to find some stuff. What I realized was this though, being a Canadian, eh, Amazon is a really great tool if you are US-based. However, when you come into Canada, finding the right camera at the right price proves to be a little bit more difficult. There's not as much to choose from, there's not as much out there. eBay, Amazon, same deal, not a lot of people selling. Now, where I did find as a Canadian a great place to find cameras is the Facebook Marketplace. So that's where we are right now. As you can see, this is simple stuff. No, these cameras aren't going for a dollar, but this is just Ottawa. If you go to a bigger city like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, you're gonna see even more options. But there are a ton of great options here for you to go down, pick through, find what you want. So really it was as simple as find a camera. There are a couple of different models I was looking at, but essentially just search camera and you'll see all of these great cameras come up. Anything within a certain area of where you're at. And bam, here's all of these different options. There's some that are just the camera, some with the lens, some of them have a little bit more. Guys like this that come with a camera with a whole bunch of lenses. There's tons of great stuff out there within a short drive from you to where you want to go. So it was as simple as me going through, finding something that was reasonable. You know, you're— this is something special. We're getting towards 75 videos on the channel. I wanted to make sure I had something that could last me through until video 150, let's say, or 200. Who knows? See how long I can make this camera gear last. Maybe it'll be the full year that I'll go with this gear, right? Maybe it'll be all the way to 300 videos. Who knows? But the reality is I wanted to find something that could last. So going through here, found a whole bunch of different options available to me. Now ultimately what I settled on was— pull up this, this camera set for you. So found this guy, was local. Not a bad gig, not a bad setup. And what I decided was, okay, I wanted kind of a little bit of everything. So he had this whole layout here, uh, essentially he wanted a certain price. The great thing about this is you can negotiate one-on-one, whereas on eBay you're, you're usually bidding against somebody or it's buy it now. Amazon, it is what it is, that's it. With the Marketplace, you get a little bit of a leeway here where you can actually barter a little bit. So I'm not going to tell you what I actually spent on it, but you were able to barter, barter a little bit, save some extra money. Got a whole great setup for it. So let's stop, take a look at what we actually grabbed today and what I'll be shooting on moving forward. All right, so we've got our gear, we know what we want, we've made the arrangement, we gotta go pick it up. So I'm gonna hop in the truck right now with my buddy, we're gonna head into town, we're gonna grab this gear, and we're gonna come on back and show you guys what it looks like. Uh, lesson learned here. Always storyboard your videos. I forgot to say, we had to go for a burger, of course. You can't just go in as a couple guys and grab a camera. So, we went for a burger. Burger Bistro, check it out. Cornwall. Delicious. Uh, he had the kangaroo. I had the camel. That's right. Kangaroo. Camel burger. It's a whole different story. I'll do a different video on it sometime, but check it out. And then we go get the camera. And then we come back and you'll see what it is. That's a good burger. It's not that— Alright guys, we're back and everything was as promised. So one of the big things when you guys are buying off Facebook is you don't have that assurance when you buy from a store or Amazon that the product is going to be the way that it is. There's no security there. So that's one of the downsides for sure to finding your camera on that marketplace, right? eBay even gives you some security that what you're buying is what you're buying, right? It'll say down in the description normally, this is what the camera is, this is what it's about. So this setup that I got, guys, that I found on Facebook Marketplace was from a guy that wanted to start a YouTube channel, went in, made the investment, dropped a couple thousand dollars on gear and equipment and whatnot. Shot 4 videos, 4 total videos, didn't see the success he was hoping for and decided, screw it, I'm done, and off we go. Now, going through a lot of the camera setups that I saw that I was interested in, this seems to be a recurring theme, especially lately with the YouTube Partner Program changing. Now, that's great news for those of you that don't care about the Partner Program changes that are looking to get yourselves a great kit. There's so many people out there right now, it's like a fire sale. Everybody that used to be part of YouTube that no longer wants to because the partner program changes, they're dumping their stuff and it's at a great price, guys. So let's take a look at what we got here. We've got— had to have it— the Joby tripod, right? So this one is one that I see just about every how-to. This is how I vlog. This is in my camera bag. This was a tripod that people had and I decided, okay, if I'm looking for something, I That's got to be one that I got. So I'm kind of excited about this to play with just because it's, it's fun to play with. Like, the tentacles are fun. I'm excited to see what I can do with that. So we've got that for on the road. Uh, that's gonna be a great tool that we can use, uh, for the living room. Yes, I love my office. It's gonna be great, but I'd love the ability to go on the road, uh, to bring this with me, uh, for if I'm in an office or if I'm doing a one-on-one interview somewhere in Ottawa. Spoiler alert, there may be some of that happening shortly. But I wanted something a little more stable and sturdy, and so bam, we've got a nice quality tripod kicking around here. It's Neewer or Neewer or something. There it is. There's that. Had to get a mic, and this is one of the things that I'm really excited about, guys. The mic on my computer right now is just an Aukey studio mic, okay? And it was great when I was doing Twitch broadcasting. It was enough. People really didn't care to hear my voice anyway. They just want to see you play the video game. But what I found with YouTube is I really wanted some better quality. So bam, Rode mic. It's gonna be a beautiful little thing, just slide it on top of the camera, and hopefully my auto audio quality will improve. Can't do anything for my speaking, but hopefully the audio quality is gonna improve. Gonna have a great new sound to go along with the videos, guys. Now there are certain things I I'm still figuring it out, okay? So a lot of this stuff came in the bag. I don't know what it is. So if you know what it is, let me know. There's this extra little piece here. I don't know what that's for. I'll figure it out, I'm sure. But as of right now, no clue what that is. That's an extra little piece in the bag. This thing? It's a reflector screen with a bullseye on it, I think. I'll figure out what that's for too. We'll play around with that a little bit, see what we can get out of it. But here's— here it is. The future of the channel! Bam! Let's see what we got in here. So like I said, guys, this was bought, 4 videos were shot with it, and it's practically brand new out of the box. How cool is that? I love it. Practically brand new out of the box. So this is the EOS Rebel T4i. The reason why I went with this is And there's a couple little features on it that I like. One, I am not a photographer. I am not. I'm just not a photographer by trade. This is not what I do for a living. I am a consultant. I deal with business. I deal with social media. I don't do photography and filmography, though I am gonna have to learn, obviously, being here on YouTube. But what I understood was this— Canon cameras, first of all, the autofocus on them makes things really, really easy for us. Okay, so that's number one. Canon camera makes it easy. Great introduce— introductory cameras. For vloggers. So that's great, that's there. Bam, we've got that autofocus. I don't have to play around with focus. Fantastic. If I can just set it on the tripod, ready to roll filming, that's what I wanted. Okay, so important, important, important for me was I am not a tech-savvy, photo-savvy, filmography-savvy guy. What I know is I need to be able to put this somewhere, push a button, and off we go, we're filming right now. The other thing that I realized is 9 times out of 10, I'm not a guy out there like most vloggers, most people with a YouTube channel anyway. I'm not one of the guys that has somebody there to shoot with me. Yeah, I've got kids and my wife, but they've got their own lives. They're busy. They can't constantly be running around making sure everything's in focus and shooting me. So I had to be sure that I could see what was going on. And this is one of the biggest things that I love about this camera. So most cameras have this viewer. They've got the— they've got your, your, your view here that you normally see taking photos, and then they've got the, the view screen on it, right? Bam! Love it. So I can throw this sucker on a tripod, see what's going on in the screen, know what's happening. So super pumped about that. Now there's no Wi-Fi connectivity or any of that stuff. I didn't need that. I'm happy to plug this in, take the SD card from here, throw it on my computer. So I didn't need any of that nonsense. What I needed was a camera that I could attach the Rode mic to and Take this on the road, be comfortable with it, play around with a little bit, see what I could get out of it. Uh, the autofocus is there, does a decent job with, with just the, the live footage as far as I understand. Will be shooting in 1080p just like the HD camera that I've got on my, on my desktop, so I'm happy about that. So all in all, guys, this was the score. And of course, not one but two lenses, so I'm not sure how to play around with those. I'm gonna learn. I'm gonna Pop onto some great channels out there like Peter McKinnon and Sarah Dietschy. I'll throw up links or something to those guys there. But here is the kit, guys. That's what we're gonna run with for the next little bit. I'm gonna be running with this kit hopefully all the way through to 300 videos. We'll see how it goes. But if you guys want to see more specs on this stuff, of course I'm gonna start including this in the comments down below, let you know what I'm shooting with as part of the description. Hopefully this does really well, and tomorrow is a milestone for us, guys. 75! We are up to our 75th video on this channel since we started at the end of December. We are already up to 75 videos. So tomorrow will be a what did I learn on YouTube in my first 75 videos? And rest assured, some of our computer— our camera stuff is gonna be on there. Learning what we need as far as quality of camera, quality of mic, quality of video, quality of audio. It's gonna be there. I'm excited for it. And hopefully I get to start playing a little bit more with Premiere Pro. You're gonna see some of that in this episode already. With me playing with audio and trying to make clips happen and, you know, really producing more of a video for you guys. But the reality is, hopefully you can see it, I'm pretty excited about this. This is a big step as far as this channel goes. So thank you so much for watching, guys. We'll catch you tomorrow for the celebratory 75th episode on the channel. But thank you so much for watching, all of you that have been here since the go. If you guys like this video, go ahead and click that like button down below, share this out with your friends, You're family, and I will catch you tomorrow with another great video. Bye.
