UX Insider: Product Hunt Roundup - E.19 - The Demo Account Is the Best Onboarding?

In this solo video, Daniel Andor of the Duran product design studio walks through five recent Product Hunt launches—UserLens, Articos, RoundOS Dataroom, Thunder Phone, and Onset—examining their onboarding flows, demo‑account implementations, navigation structures, and overall usability. For each product he creates an account (usually via Google), explores the initial setup steps, and notes where the experience succeeds (e.g., clear demo accounts, clean sign‑up pages) and where it falters (e.g., missing back navigation, hidden next‑step buttons, inconsistent sidebars, unclear terminology). He repeatedly highlights the importance of visible next‑step cues, consistent UI patterns, and contextual guidance to prevent users from missing critical actions. The video concludes with a synthesis: while some tools excel at onboarding and demo‑account exposure, many still need better guidance, clearer navigation, and more intuitive step progression to fully convey product value.

Hi, I'm Daniel from Duran, a product design studio for growth stage tech teams. Together we explore what's working, what's not, and what you can learn from the newest launches on Product Hunt. Let's dive in. First, we have UserLens. Let agents talk to your customers. Okay, let's create an account. Nice, simple signup page. As you can see, don't have any options to create an account with email. It's just Google or Microsoft. So we will go with Google. Okay, now adding the workspace name, UX testing. You can also skip. Let's add them. And then we are inside of the product. Let's see. Nice, simple so far. You have the steps on the right. This says that there are 2 essential steps to complete and we have 4 optional. The first one is you have to connect A database. Now we don't have a database to connect, so we see what we can do without it. There is also a demo, which is quite a nice touch to have, have a demo here and you can play around. I assume we will look into that as well. But yeah, I don't have a database to connect so far, so we will leave it as is. Home. The states here are changing a bit, but like nothing major though. Every page is slightly different, I would say. I don't know, notebooks and campaigns, they are somewhat similar. Home is different, health is different, and then there is people and accounts. How do I go back to, to the page where I started? So it looks like I cannot go back there. I have to click on open setup. Okay, let's see the demo account. And here we are, this is the demo account. As you can see, it's like we have A nice yellow bar on top to make sure that it's visible that this is just a demo account. What we can do here, like we have a home, go with reengage, and then you can chat. Still analyzing things. So we'll see how much it takes. And that's all. Okay. Couple more questions. Just go with the default. I'm just curious of like what they actually output in the end. Still working. Also look around other stuff, I assume, right? So I'm not sure what health does and notebooks. We also have people here and accounts. And we have the recent chats here. Start something new on the side. Okay. Let's go back to campaigns. What happened with my campaigns? This isn't part of a campaign or campaign is something different. Okay, let's just go here again. Yeah, I'm not sure which section is this part of, but okay, we have this. What we can do, we can create a new chat. So this is just part of the home screen. And under campaigns, if I click on new campaign, it would be nice if they would have the same style of suggestions, I would say. Okay, a couple more questions. And here we go. We have the first campaign, right? Yep. This is the first guidance and who and what's next from here. This is quite easy to miss. I'm not sure if is there anything else that I should do. So the next steps maybe could be a bit more visible. Like this is quite easy to miss. And then you can activate and the campaign is activated. And then you can run. But if we go back, how we cannot go back now? I wasn't sure if there was this button, but overview. No, there wasn't that button. So maybe adjust the button somewhere to move from this step to the next one, because otherwise it's very easy to actually miss the buttons, you know, the next steps that you should take. But other than that, I really like the onboarding. So this looks super nice, easy to follow. All the steps are here and visible. It's nice that they Show what kind of sources you can connect and also the the demo account. It's like that's that's super nice. Okay, the next one is Articos. Test your audience first. Decide with evidence. Let's see what we can do with this one. Okay, very minimalistic. Create account. Let's go with Google here as well. Now we are in the onboarding part. So we have a couple of questions. We also have a chat here, which I'm not sure why it's here, but. It is there. Current role, let's go with— what's the difference between a founder and an agency owner? Let's go with agency owner for now. Okay. It was very short, like just 2 steps and we are straight in the product. And the whole thing is a chat window so far. There is new study and dashboard. There is also demo study. Looks like another product with a demo, which is nice. And you can read into the study participants, clarity, methodology, positioning, and everything else. Okay, if we go back, new study. Let's go with a landing page test. How is that? Value proposition. And let's add ours. Okay, we have suggestions for target audience, product leaders, startups, SaaS teams. This field, it's, it can be a bit challenging to read because there's like a lot of stuff in it and, and it's very short. But approve, I didn't check the global. Can I? I cannot go back. I was curious if it's like a dropdown or just you have to input stuff. Okay. What's this thing on the right side? There are persona. Okay. Can I add more? Okay, let's go with this setup and see how it goes. So now they generate 9 personas. Also, they kind of ruined our name. We have the personas. I'm not sure how they generated these. Oh, what? Yeah, there is a lot of data in it. You can refine, you can delete as well. Okay, let's generate a script. I'm just curious where this whole thing will lead at the moment. Okay, and now execute the study, and I assume this will take a while, right? Okay, you can download the transcripts as well, and there is also video. Okay, this you have to upgrade for this one. We still need a couple more. Can I view the transcript? Everything is done, and now we can go to the report. Okay, so once the report is done, they will just email it over, so I assume we don't have to wait here. I'm not sure how long this takes, but we can look around a bit. So going through the steps was not a big problem, I would say. The only thing is the name. They got the name wrong. I have to look into the results to see how or if that's affected in any way the rest of the document. And other than that, if you take a look here, It's a bit weird that things are changing here on the sidebar. So for new study, you can see we have recent studies here, but for dashboards, we don't have it anymore. Persona library puts it back. Organization keeps it there. Oh yeah, probably dashboard. And I'm also not sure why they call it dashboard. You can create a new study here, which is the same thing as this one. So maybe just merging these 2 in one page could help. And then having a single page for all this. Because I assume if I click on create study, then yeah, you'll end up here as well. Okay, is this still ongoing? Yeah, this will take a while, I assume. So yeah, probably there are a couple of things that can be improved. So especially here in the navigation side with the new study and dashboard, either can be split like how it's on the other AI tools when this is clearly a way to create a new study or create a new chat. And then dashboard, persona library, and organization will be part of the actual sidebar or navigation structure. Okay. I'm not sure how you can add personas to this library. You can save them from the studies. And then you can add members and settings, I assume. And homepage. What's the homepage? This goes back to the homepage. Okay, that's a— I never saw anything like this, at least not so far. And account settings. Okay, and we have organization. So these can leave people a bit lost about what's here, why it's there, like why I have organization here, but I have account settings here. Organization should be also part of account settings as far as I know. So yeah, maybe this can be just put under account settings somehow. Also, it's a bit weird that this is an overlay. The rest of them are pages. But yeah, other than that, nothing major, I would say. And we have the report almost. We almost have the report. I still some things going on here. You have a score which looks like we didn't do that well. Okay, you can also talk to the research, but you have to upgrade obviously. And there are a couple of things here that you can go through. It's like the research, the report itself looks useful, I would say. So I will definitely go through the whole thing. And then it takes a while to read through the whole report. But yeah, it's a nice touch that you have all the sections on the left side. I assume I cannot download— yeah, cannot download the PDF. And it's easy to follow along of how you set up actually the whole research. Okay, the next one is RoundOS Dataroom. Every paid Dataroom feature free forever, including who read which page. Let's create a free room. But then how do they make money if everything is free? Okay, so they have some kind of paid plans. Okay, let's create a free room. Very clean signup page once again. Looks like there is— looks like everybody created a nice clean signup page so far. And we are straight in the product. You can upload the documents. No onboarding as far as I can see. There is this chat that welcomes you, and there are questions. Whatever is that? Documents, links, data rooms, overview, visitors. Let's upload something. See, let's upload a PDF. Go with our deck. Okay, this is uploaded. And now what we can do is here I can select it. I can create a link. You can give it a name. Keep updating anyone with the link. Verify email. Can you create like link 1? Okay. Can you create multiple links or is just one link? Still creating. Takes a while or something is still uploading. Okay. Temporarily unavailable. Let's try once again. Still not working. So This is still uploading. At least there it says uploading. Here it says upload complete. Let's refresh. Maybe, maybe. Okay, still scanning. You can upload a new version. You can delete. Can I create a running one? Let's try once again. See if this time will work or not. Yeah, looks like it's not working. Switched up. Now it's working. Yeah, now it's working. So if it actually created a bunch of links, if I go back here, you can see the links here. So it created the links, but for some reason it didn't work. Okay, and then we will just open them to see how it looks. So let's open this one. It will ask for an email and a name, and then you can go through All these steps. It's not bad actually so far. And if I close this, somewhere we should have statistics. So you can see there is open 1, people 1, last open 1 minute ago, and average time. Does that work? Like, I stayed on that a bit. Can I see, like, there is some stuff there so you can see it. And also how much I stayed on each page. Okay, let's try another one. Let's try this one. Copy link. Chrome OS opens again. Okay, so they will send me a code which I have to add here. Code added. And now I assume it should look somewhat similar. Now it has all these text over it. The other one didn't have that as far as I remember. And this one actually loads way, way slower. Okay, and now if we go back here and refresh, you can see again the same thing. Nice. Yeah, simple product. You have all the stuff that you need for uploading. This, this also works, but when I was here, it didn't really work, or it takes a while probably to Yeah, takes a while probably to actually collect the data. You can reprocess whatever that means. You can see everything here, who opened it, who's the most engaged. Nice. You can build data rooms. You have the overview, you have the visitors, which is just me. Agreements, not sure. Agreements, brand that you can also customize, and the workspace. Nice. So you kind of have everything that you would probably need to send out like PDFs. In our case, I send out PDFs as presentations. For that, we would be kind of covered. The only annoying part was once I uploaded the documents, it said uploading, but it wasn't uploading anymore. And then when I created the link, it failed a couple of times. So the links were created. So That might create a bit of frustration there. The next product is Thunder Phone. Let's get started. You can create an account. Oh, that's straight from the beginning. They asked, how did you hear about that? Which is optional, but it's very easy to miss the label actually here. So we'll just leave it empty. Create the account. Let's accept these. Okay. And now we are in the product. So we have a small onboarding with a couple of steps. 5: create the agent, set up the billing, add a phone number, run a simulation, and view your call. You can also skip and go to the dashboard. Let's see what this create an agent does. So you have the transcript here for the voice agent. Okay. Actions. You can engine. Got it. Languages. Connected apps. API connections. And the cost. And the fact that it auto saves. We still have two more steps. Quite a lot of them. You can deploy it here. And now you can talk to the agent there. Okay. Click to continue. Where? Where should I click now? Click the yellow dot. I cannot find the dot. Oh, so this one. Okay. And you can, whatever. And other than this, I assume like I should deploy. And now it's deployed and you can run a simulation. Okay. And now I would have to set up billing. So if I go back to home, yes, the next step would be to add the payment. Now here again, we have like a bunch of steps. This add cars to continue yellow dotty, it's very easy to miss in my opinion. So it's a bit confusing because you also have steps that you just click next and you also have steps that you have to do stuff. So yeah, I'm not sure if this is the best approach because it's like, again, now it says something here and done. And I can add the number. So basically I can go through the steps even if I don't complete it. But the fact that they combine steps with actions and steps without actions makes it a bit easy to miss the one that you actually have to complete because you were used to the fact that the rest of them were just next, next, next. And also it says that click on the yellow dot or something like that that's pulsating. Because of how the thing is cut off, it's really hard to notice that something is actually pulsating below. Other than that, yeah, the product looks okay, but I would definitely work a bit on the onboarding and see what can be streamlined there. There is like a lot of steps that you have to do, but yeah, these products can be a bit complex on the onboarding. The next product is Onset. Keep customers in the loop on every release. Let's start. Yeah, verify that I'm a human. Sign up with Google. No testimonials, nothing else on the signup page. It's like a very bare bones clean, simple signup page. Workspace name. I usually don't like when something like this happens. Okay, workspace created and we are in the product. Welcome. Hi there. Excited to have you. Quite a long document. This is a new release. So what should I do next? I assume I should create a new release or something like that, right? So yeah, it would be nice to have some, some small guidance here and there. So You can create a new release. You can write everything here. You can publish the release. Then you have releases. But yeah, I just landed here. So it would be nice to have like a bit of a guidance of this is what you should do next. You can connect a bunch of stuff. Release notes. How is this release notes? This is their release notes. Okay. And yeah, you can switch between light and dark mode and so on and so on. But yeah, other than that, the product looks somewhat easy to use. I mean, it's like an editor, so it shouldn't be very, very complex, at least what I can see here. Not sure about the roadmap. They will be deprecated either way. Subscribers, okay, you can add them. I assume you can also import them somehow. You have sources or add subscriber. How do I upload them or something? I'm not sure how you can actually add the subscribers, like adding them one by one. That's a very long list. I assume you can somehow import them, right? Through these, maybe through the integrations or anything else. My account. My account is something different. How I can go back now? Let's go with save. Nothing. I'm not sure how I can go back from here. I click save, it's saved, but still here. I don't have an X to— doesn't work with escape either. I just have to click on back. That's it for today. Hopefully you found some interesting products, ideas, or some learnings from what they are doing well and where they can improve. As you can see, especially on the onboarding side, some of them have really strong points like how they onboard people and also having the the demo account that you can play around. But for some others, there is still a bit of room for improvements in guiding the users through the value of the product and what they can actually deliver. Thanks.
