A Simple Way to Break a Bad Habit | Judson Brewer | TED

Judson Brewer explains why paying attention is difficult—because evolutionarily conserved reward-based learning (positive/negative reinforcement) creates context-dependent habits (e.g., eating, smoking, stress-eating). Rather than fighting these urges with cognitive control, he proposes using mindfulness and curiosity to 'become the inner scientist' and notice the sensory makeup of cravings, which leads to visceral disenchantment and gradual habit change. In his lab's smoking study, participants (who had on average six prior failed quit attempts) were instructed to mindfully examine smoking (even told to smoke) and many became disenchanted. Mindfulness training was reported as twice as effective as the gold-standard therapy for smoking cessation. Neuroimaging implicates the default mode network—particularly the posterior cingulate cortex—which quiets when people step out of craving. Brewer also describes app/online delivery that uses contextual cues to prompt in-the-moment mindful awareness.
