Daniel Goleman: Three Kinds of Focus

8 Oct 2013 · 1 min

Daniel Goleman describes three kinds of focus: (1) inner focus — awareness of one’s own thoughts and feelings, foundational for cognitive control and self-management; (2) empathy (other-focus) — attending to and understanding another person’s inner world; and (3) outer focus — perceiving larger systems and how actions affect them. He cites a "landmark study" of over 1,000 children followed from age 4 into their 30s showing childhood cognitive control predicted adult financial success and health more strongly than IQ or family wealth.
