If You Felt Lost This Last Year… Watch This

A motivational year-in-review workshop (YouTube video) led by Brendon Burchard that reframes end-of-year reflection into generative personal development. Burchard argues most people over-focus on reflection and regret and under-practice daily intentionality—‘job one’ is to summon the best of who you are consistently—and offers coaching prompts, psychological framing, and a brief promotion for the Growth Day app.

You can't see the ripple effect of your good behaviors this last year. You might feel your bad behaviors, but I can tell you you probably can't feel and sense the ripple effect of good character over a long period of time. In fact, my belief is most people spend too much time in reflection and remuneration and reaction, and they are not generative enough in their life. And that is where the regret comes from. I'm going to begin today's review of your entire year with a quote. I want you to listen to this quote and then maybe you'll find some encouragement when you hear who actually said it. Okay, so now we are in your year in review workshop. Let's begin. I am distressed, almost discouraged and fatigued to the point of feeling slightly ill. What I am doing is no good. And in spite of your confidence, I am very much afraid that my efforts will all lead to nothing. I'll read it one more time. I'm distressed, almost discouraged and fatigued to the point of feeling slightly ill. What I am doing is no good. And in spite of your confidence, I am very much afraid that my efforts will all lead to nothing. This is a quote from Claude Monet. If you are a student of history, especially art history, you know that Monet changed the entire world. The movement of Impressionism changed the way we literally looked at art, the way that we conceived nature, the. The epoch changing moment and that season of this person's life. He was mired in doubt, feeling like, I'm doing all this stuff, it's not turning out good. What's the point? I appreciate that other people believe in me, but I don't see it. I don't feel it. Have you ever been there this year? Do you feel like there's things this year that you did that just didn't amount to anything and you're worried that you're wasting your time or you're in the wrong profession, or you're selling the wrong thing, or your business is going nowhere. If you sense and feel that I'm here to tell you that's pretty normal. The greats feel that everybody around you always has some part of them that feels like, am I on the right path? Am I doing the right things? Will this turn out well? And so, as we review your year today, we're going to do it in a very different way than you've probably ever done before. In that I really want to make this a personal development workshop for you. Not just reflective, but generative. In fact, my belief is most people spend too much Time in reflection and remuneration and reaction. And they are not generative enough in their life. And that is where the regret comes from. They're living in a past. They're pushing a past story. They're living in a narrative they feel trapped in without understanding how truly conscious action can change your life today, regardless of yesterday, regardless of childhood style, regardless of astrology, regardless of how they felt three weeks ago, your ability to generate a new reality is beyond your current conception. Most people who achieve extraordinarily great things in their life, they will always attribute some sense of, of luck to it or grace to it. They didn't see it getting that big, becoming that, like, successful. And if they have an ounce of humility, their level of appreciation for it is at a 12. Because, you know, at some level they didn't believe in themselves. At some level they had some imposter syndrome. At some level things went really bad. At some level, they dipped out. At some level they got tired. At some level they wanted to quit. And yet things turned out better than expected. I'm here to share with you that your year. If you're watching this right now, and you have the gift of spending some time in your personal development today, and you have the gift of having a new vision for this next year, I'm here to tell you things are probably turning out better than you think. You can't see the ripple effect of your good behaviors this last year. You might feel your bad behaviors, you might feel regret, you might feel upset, you might feel like your potential is barely even scratched. But I can tell you, you probably can't feel and sense the ripple effect of good character over a long period of time. You probably can't feel and sense those good behaviors that you had that helped somebody get through the year that you didn't even know was struggling. You probably did some good this year that you've discounted or didn't see. And so I hope today as we go real deep into your psychology and your performance, because that's my job, I'm your mindset coach today. We're doing mental conditioning today to have an incredible and generative next year. So this is not going to be like, let's just journal on these little things. We're actually going to go pretty deep today. And as your coach, I'm going to push really hard today in some explorations of your year that you probably never had before, because you've never probably worked with a high performance coach to review an entire year before. So I'm going to ask A series of questions today about how you live this year so that we can find a better year next year. Because that's the goal. Continue getting better. Grow into our fuller potential. Tap back into a more powerful and strong new nature of who we are. I like to tell people, this year, you did job one or you didn't do job one. Job number one is to summon the best of who you are every day. That's the job. You did the job consistently this year, or you didn't even know that was his job. A lot of society, they. They don't know that's the job. They don't think about it. They. They're not thinking each day, how can I bring out the best of me today? How can I express the best of who I am? How can I feel the best positive emotions of my life today? How can I guide my behaviors today to be a person of character? How can I add value today as the best of who I am? Not just going through the motions to get a paycheck, but actually be an artist, Actually give the best of who I am? Because you know what? A lot of people don't want to give the best of who they are because they think they're not appreciated. They're playing a game of appreciation, recognition, reward, status. They don't understand the game is ultimately about internal respect. You do job one, summon the best of who you are as consistently as you can. Not to have success in the outer world, but. So you finish the year now saying, I gave my best this year, I showed up this year. I pulled the best out of myself, even when it was hard. I have honor and respect about the character who showed up this year because it wasn't just acting from a place of neediness or reaction, but rather, I chose who I was this year. I chose to create the energy and the intention, the behaviors that I will respect of myself. And that's a hard question to ask, but that's what a coach will ask you is, did you summon the best of who you are regardless? Could you all write that down? Did you summon the best of who you are regardless, Regardless of the circumstance, regardless of the mood, regardless of the fairness? Because a lot of people go, it's not fair, so why try? People don't even see and recognize my work, so I'll just go through the motions. They think they're, you know, getting by, sliding by staying under the radar, not getting noticed at work for not giving full effort. And the unfortunate reality is they're not cheating their employer, they're cheating themselves. Job number one, summon the best of who you are consistently. My question is, did that happen this year at the levels that you need it to? Not Me, not, you know, your boss, not your customers, not your audience, not your fans. For you, for the level of respect that you want internally, did you summon the best of who you are? Did you see yourself through? Did you pull out your best nature? Did you show up even when it was hard? That question will dominate your confidence in this next year. The more consistently we sense that we are showing up. Job one, I'm showing up. I'm gonna summon the best of who I am. The more we do that, year after year after year after year after year, the more that internal respect becomes a sense of competency. Like, I can do it. I. I can face hard things. I can show up. But also becomes a beautiful state of confident character. I know who I am. I will show up authentically. I know when what I'm like, I know what I will do, what I won't do. Because self awareness only comes from the ability to consistently summon the best of who you are. Everything else is maybe a philosophy, which we'll talk about, but to truly know oneself, one must express oneself. To truly know oneself, one must have expressed oneself, not thought about it, but actually shown up. And you'll never truly know yourself until you've actually reached that outer potential and challenge yourself to go a little beyond it. Until you know your edges, you don't have self awareness. You have concepts, but not awareness. Real awareness knows its edges. Real awareness knows its boundaries. Real awareness knows its, its potentialities. Real awareness, real consciousness has a sense of itself. That's what consciousness is, right? A sense of self. And so when you really express who you are and you summon the best of who you are, consistently, the self awareness grows. And everybody at this time of year, they're in self reflection. And I will say, why are you in self reflection right now? And they say, well, you know, I just want to do journaling so I can reflect on myself. I'm like, okay, great. So the point of that is to know your potentialities, to know your true self, not in reflection, but in observance of how you really showed up. That's who you are, not just what you think. It's who you show up as on a consistent basis over a period of time. That's who you are. Everything else might be thoughts, but who you are is how you show up consistently. We can say, no, no, no, Brandon, you know, it's my imagination of myself. I'm like, yeah, I guess you could call that a subjective reality, but objective reality is how you're going to gauge yourself. The real way you measure yourself is how you showed up. And this year, you can look back at a global level and be satisfied with how you showed up or dissatisfied. My urging to you wouldn't make an evaluation where it's satisfied or dissatisfied. My suggestion to you is to make it aware and generative. What I mean is, like, I can look back dozens of times and I go, I did not show up as my best self. I made a mistake. I regret that action. I went the wrong path. What, Brandon, what were you doing? I can see. I'm like, brendan, I'm like, what are you. What were you even thinking? But in no way do I get angered at myself. In no way do I shut myself down. In other words, I go, I can see that that was not the best behavior. I'm going to alter my behavior in the future without the guilt and the shame. I can objectively see that was a bad path. So now I'm going to generate a better path without the guilt, without the shame, without the anger, without discouragement, without tearing myself down. I think you spent way too many hours of your life tearing yourself down and way too few in full intention to summon and express the best of who you are. Because one is just easier. Because we have models every single day of people tearing other people down. We have models in the media of everything is conflict. If it doesn't bleed, it doesn't lead. So we have the way to tear ourselves down. We have the negativity, we have the division out there. But we very rarely have the personal power to go within and say, I'm going to summon the best of who I am today. I'm going to do that consistently. And so I'm going to speak in two terms to you today, two levels, if you will. And one level I'm going to ask you to do, like, a global review of the year. Global meaning like your general feeling about the entire year. All right? So you don't have to be specific. You don't have to have your calendar open and look at all your meetings and go, was that meeting worthwhile? We. We can get there, but I'm gonna start globally. But then once in a while, I'll go into the specifics. Now I'm gonna. I'm going to spend my time today in mostly that. That global realm with you. And I'm going to ask that you apply it specifically. But what I want you to do is realize that anything I share today might be a big picture, but you could also go into your calendar and look month by month or week by week, event by event and ask that question. Did I honestly show up the best that I could? Did I, in that moment, remember to summon the best of who I am? Did I do it so you could, like, look back and like, what were the big moments of this year? What were the big meetings of this year? What were the big opportunities and the opportunities where you feel like nothing happened and you could look at all of them and ask a very simple question. Did I summon the best of who I am in that situation? Did I remember to get conscious? Did I remember to pay attention? And I can share with you, the more often you could say yes, the better you feel about your life. It is the most simple and elegant thing I can give you from now on in your life. Job number one, summon the best to who I am. Like, be conscious enough to summon that. Like, to ask of that, to ask of that. You're not always going to get it right, but the more often you ask of that, the more you'll have personal power. Because now you're conscious, now you're living intentionally. I know a lot of people say, but, Brennan, that's also demanding perfection. No, I'm asking some of the best of who you are in that moment. You actually might be better in other moments, but in that moment, that's the best you could do. You showed up full hearted, not half hearted, not disengaged, not running through the motions, but rather intentional and present. And if you can do that over and over and over again, you'll find a different quality of life next year.
