A state of high performance in 1988. Let me just take you back a little bit. So I was. Wow. I was a junior in high school. You wrote a book that said, hey, idiots. You didn't say idiots because you're nice, but I'm just translating, hey, idiots, you're eating the wrong kind of fat and you're eating too many of the wrong kind of carbs, and that's what's making you fat. And you had the courage to call it beyond Pritikin. Pritikin is one of the. Him and Ornish basically poisoned the country for decades with this low fat, high carb nonsense. But in 1988, how did you know this before everyone else?
Because I was the director of Nutrition, Dave, in 1980 with the Pritikin Longevity center, and I saw people healing from a no to low fat diet. I saw people healing and then getting very sick and getting cancer. They weren't getting heart disease, they were coming down with cancer. And I started looking at the research and I looked at the literature and I learned about essential fatty acids, the importance of fish oil, evening primrose oil, olive oil, and coconut oil. I wrote about it in 1988. So I've always been against the grain and I had to start telling the truth. And I saw so many people getting sick and getting cancer. So I wrote a book called Beyond Pritikin. Pritikin Longevity center wanted to stop the promotion of the book and the printing of the book, but I prevailed. And I've been promoting and publishing 35 additional books thereafter. So the right kind of fats has been a focus of mine forever and ever. Fat is where it's at. Sugar is a demon, and we can't demonize fat anymore. It really helps the brain, the heart, the liver, the joints, the hair, the nails, the skin, and our sex drive. That's all in my new book, Radical Longevity.
It is so remarkable because as far as I know, you're the first person to say that. And I've. I've definitely said the same thing. Oh, you can go low fat. And if you're a cardiovascular person and you say, I'm just going to put on this little thing, the side effect of that diet is cancer. I also publicly, on my blog, and he actually responded to it, mentioned that Steve Jobs was on the Ornish diet and that the Ornish diet killed Steve Jobs to his detriment.
To his detriment.
Yeah. And Dr. Ornish in his response on my blog said, well, I recommended he get the cancer surgery and he didn't want to do it. Yeah, but it was your nutritional recommendations for high sugar that caused him to. To get cancer by causing mitochondrial dysfunction. But you were the first. So you just noticed that there was a surprising abundance of cancer in people who were on the Pritikin diet. And that was sort of the first observation that led you down the path.
Well, from West Hartford, Connecticut, to Santa Monica, California, was my first job in 1980. And a woman came in to see me way back in 1980. She said, I am the director of Follow up, she said, and everybody may be healing themselves from cardiac problems, but they're all kinds coming down with cancer. You have to figure out why. And so I started looking at their diets. I started looking at their blood tests. People were running 130 cholesterol and bragging about it. I saw high LDLs, low HDL. And I said to myself, something is wrong with this picture. So when you see it in front of you, you have to realize that you've got to go a little deeper and look where people were failing to take a look. And that was in the literature. So that's where fish oil was coming into play in 1984. That's where the eating primrose are, the olive oil and even the coconut oil. So I wrote about it because of what I saw and because of this woman, Wilmac Keller, may she rest in peace, because she died, Dave, four years later of bone cancer.
