Is it true that people today, especially young people, are more emotionally fragile than their predecessors? Yes, it is true. It's scientifically proven. How much more fragile? I can't give you a percentage, but I can say that I've seen the curves. There's a really great book called Generations by Gene Twenge and we talked exactly about this because I had a hypothesis and she confirmed that I'm on the right track there. What we saw was a self esteem movement turned into a grandiose narcissism movement, turned into what I think today is a vulnerable narcissism movement. And that has certainly made us more fragile. I joke sometimes. I say, well, if I had to choose between grandiose or vulnerable narcissism, I'd rather be grandiose narcissist. I'd rather not be either. But you know what I'm saying. We found that we may need to rethink grandiose narcissism. Mostly when people look at grandiose and vulnerable narcissism, they look between people, but they don't look within a particular individual to see whether or not the particular balance of vulnerable and grandiose matters. So that we were like the first study to actually look within people.
