Alicia Mackey Huber argues that cutting sodium is bad advice. Your body craves salt for hydration and electrolyte balance. She recommends natural sea salt or mined salt over iodized versions, which may contain aluminum or microplastics, and suggests adding a pinch to water each morning.

People are saying you should cut sodium. In fact, I have friends who are tired all the time who don't have salt. They've taught themselves to not like the taste of salt. The reason that your body craves salt is because it's part of how you hydrate, and iodized salt is not particularly good for you. The stuff that the purified sodium that they sell use has aluminum in it. But if you're getting sea salt, or better yet, mined salt that doesn't have microplastics, what you get is the ability to keep yourselves hydrated. So what I recommend in the book, and what I have been recommending for a very long time since the start of my blog, is a little bit of salt in water in the morning and you can get electrolytes. In fact, anytime you have more minerals in your liquids, your body will work better.
