Episode 429: Cannabis Is Helping Him Battle MS and Glaucoma
18 Sept 2024 · 28 min
Johannes, a Danish man with MS and glaucoma, uses 1.5 to 2 grams of THC daily to manage pain and mobility. He waited nine months to see Denmark's only government-approved cannabis doctor, then turned to an illegal supply chain with help from his caregiver Irina, who calls herself a criminal for assisting him.

Now, multiple sclerosis is more prevalent in certain countries, particularly in regions farther from the equator. Canada has the highest rate of Ms. In the world, followed by Scotland, the Scandinavian countries and the northern US Our guest today is from one of those Scandinavian countries. And joining us from Denmark is Johannes, who has Ms. Along with glaucoma in both eyes. And joining us to assist Johannes is Irina. We're not going to use their last names because Denmark is one of those countries that kind of demonizes cannabis. Did I get that correct, Johannes? Denmark is not a good place for a cannabis user.
No, no, not.
It's fully correct, Ian.
Yeah. Now, which health issue were you first diagnosed with? Ms. Or glaucoma? Ms. What were some of the symptoms you experienced with Ms. Prior to your diagnosis?
I was having some pills so I could survive the first 15 years.
He's asking about what your first symptoms was before you noticed it. And then it was multiple grows. What your first symptoms was was to.
Fall on the floor.
Oh, you were falling on the floor. How long did that last before they told you you had ms?
Couple of three weeks.
Three weeks?
Yeah.
Now, when they told you you had ms, do you remember the day they told you?
Yeah.
Tell me about that.
Nurse from the hospital was calling me how to help, how I was feeling in that moment. That moment already knew all things about the disease. So I know what I could expect.
Irina, can you help us out here? What was life like for Johannes with MS?
I just started to know Johannes. 20. 19, I think, or 20. Yeah, 19. And when I learned Johannes and to. Yeah, when I got to know Johannes, he also got eye drops medicine for his eyes, and so he couldn't see so much. And the multiple sclerosis medicine he didn't take, he always just took oil. And at that time, it was actually the eyes was bothering the most because of the medication. So he dropped the medication for the eyes and got better for the eyes again and just took cannabis oil in capsules and also in little bottles so he could take drops. But the drops was too difficult for him to handle because of the side he has. So we got him into capsule for him so he could take it more easy. And when I got to know him and he got a lot more cannabis oil, because I know some. Some people who can get it to him, and he started to walk a lot better and he started actually to have better conversations with me. Yeah.
Now Johannes has difficulty speaking because of the Ms. Have you noticed that since he started taking cannabis, his conversation has improved quite a bit?
No, it's very different from day to day, actually. Some days he can talk more clearly and other days he has, like his. Or what do you call it in English, his demibond. It's more wronging. Like now you can't hear him. So good. So good.
Yeah, it's difficult for him to communicate because of it. Because of his Ms. Yeah. And now when you say you got the oil. In a conversation we had before the interview, Johannes was saying how dreadful Denmark is with its cannabis policy. Is it difficult for you to get oil in Denmark.
When you know the right people? It's not so difficult, but you have to know people who do it by themselves because otherwise it's very, very difficult to get. You can get CBD oil now, but not THC oil.
Yeah. And for ms, you need. You need high thc, correct?
Yeah, correct. Yeah.
Yeah.
So, yeah, I'm being a criminal every time I help him with it. But all the guys, women I know who's doing it, they're all making themselves criminals because we would like to help. And somehow I get it that the government shouldn't decide what we put in our body to heal ourselves as long as we don't do anybody harm and we actually get better of it.
Well, that's right. I mean, you're not the criminal. Johannes isn't the criminal for taking it. The government is the criminal for not allowing people to put in their bodies what they want. Nobody has ever died from taking cannabis. No, I mean, it's impossible to die from taking cannabis, but you can die from drinking too much water. You can die from pharmaceutical drugs, and those are legal, even though the pharmaceutical companies have been fined billions of dollars for illegally selling products that they say are safe, that are not safe. And so I don't think you're a criminal at all. You shouldn't call yourself a criminal because. No, I think what you're doing is you're helping you and Johannes. You are helping Johannes, and Johannes is helping himself. So why does the government have to get involved?
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
Sorry, it doesn't make any sense.
It's the most hopeless socialist country we have here in Denmark. We have socialists and communism everywhere. We are the highest paid country in the world. We pay the highest tax in the whole world.
Yeah, but they say Denmark is one of the happiest countries in the world.
Yeah, because.
They keep us down, that's why.
Yeah. Now, Johannes, when you weren't taking the cannabis oil, how were you feeling?
I was feeling very bad. But after I felt okay that I was taking care of the company for 15 years before I had to stop.
Hennessys used to have an entrepreneur company, a very big entrepreneur company.
Oh, okay.
Yes, actually one of the biggest at that time.
Oh, interesting.
Yeah.
And Irina Wynn, have you noticed an improvement over the years that you've known Johannes with his ms, or has it pretty well stayed the same?
It has pretty well stayed the same. Yeah.
But it hasn't gotten any worse.
No, no, it hasn't got any worse. Oh, is it?
Yeah, if you take the last five years I had one son was delivering in May.
Yeah, but that was before I knew Johannes.
Sorry, what was he saying, Irina?
Yeah, but he didn't get the question right. He asked me about if I could see an improvement or if it was just the same for you. The multiple sclerosis after you've been taking cannabis oil. And I think the attacks he have been having, I think they could have been harder on him. If he hasn't got the cannabis oil, he hasn't been committed on his sick house. When I start to learn him, to know him one time in the start, because there was nobody else to take care of Johannes. His. His children don't think it's good for him to take cannabis. So they won't support it. He's actually living all alone in his summer house here and I'm the only one who is visiting him and helping him. And then he got some little bit of help from the government in the morning to help get him his breakfast and that's it. Yeah.
So his children won't see him because of his cannabis use.
Yeah.
Well, it's interesting how. How do I phrase this politely? How brainwashed some people are about the use of cannabis.
Yeah.
I mean, Johannes, if you were an alcoholic, your children would still see you.
Yeah, right. Only also. Only I have never beaten my children. I have never done anything to harm them. Never. Yeah, I also pay for the education.
Yeah, it's, you know, whenever we talk to people around the world and members and they take cannabis and members of their family are opposed to it and influence them, usually it's at that time when the user of cannabis changes their mind and their health starts to fail. I mean, we've talked to people who have had very serious cancers and when their families have convinced them not to take cannabis, they have actually died.
Yeah.
And it's very sad. It's very sad that your, you know, your children don't support you, but, you know, one day they will realize their mistake.
I hope so.
Oh, yeah, I think. I mean, I think what you're going through now with your Ms. And glaucoma. Tell me about your glaucoma. Has that. Has that gotten better since your cannabis use or remain the same?
It's gone worse.
Worse?
Yeah.
After you started using cannabis. We talked about it earlier today and his side is starting to get a little worse. Maybe he's not taking enough cannabis. I don't know.
How much cannabis do you take a day?
About two grams. Yeah, one and a half or two grams thc.
Oh, that's a lot.
Yeah.
Johannes, if I took that much, I would be high for about three days.
I don't feel anything.
You don't feel anything?
Well.
No.
Irina thinks that's funny.
Listen, I have not had a cold in 50, 40 years. I have not had an influence with coughing or never. Never. I never been sick. Never. I never had a sick day in the company. I worked every day for the company. It doesn't matter. The school also.
Johannes, when you were working, were you taking cannabis?
Yeah.
You sneaky devil.
Yeah, yeah. But I didn't tell anyone.
No, why would you?
I was working very. Okay, for 15 years and I had some good customers and also some very good people who worked for me for 20, 30 years. So for Me it was not a problem. And because TV inspection company.
He had a TV inspection company so he could take a TV down the pipelines to see Johannes.
When Irina said that you're staying at your cottage and it's summertime now, do you move back to the town or city during the winter?
No. No.
You stay there all the time?
Yes. He lives here summer and winter. When I started to know him, his ex wife drove him up here because she has taken his cannabis oil from him and Johannes couldn't find it. And Johannes was mad at her and told her she could just drop him up in the summer house and just let him live there. So he has been living here, but now he has sold it and he had a dream about moving to Spain or usa. But in the start he's going to live down with me and my husband.
Live with you and your husband? Yeah. And you said, Irina in an email that it takes you an hour to commute to where Johannes is.
Yes.
Boy. Johannes, you've had. Go ahead.
No, I lived in the middle of Jutland on the west coast.
Johannes, you've had a tough time with both your health and your family. It must be difficult for you to be alone all the time. Most of the time, yeah. Because if. I mean if I did that and consumed as much cannabis as you did, I would be high and I wouldn't mind it.
But I don't feel it.
Get as high as a donkey, I'll tell you. And he just said to me afterwards, I didn't feel a thing.
Oh, you are. You are priceless. If you didn't take cannabis.
Yeah.
What would life be like for you?
Two, three weeks, that's for sure.
You know, in these. We've interviewed several people who have had Ms. And their cannabis is such a relief for them. Their symptoms just. It helps with the pain and the discomfort. And it's very frustrating for me to interview people like that who live in areas where it's illegal. And I think how can the medical profession and government know that something helps them so much as cannabis, but they penalize people like that. Irina, do. Do Johannes doctors know he's taking cannabis?
That's quite. Actually quite funny because I have been last time I have. Johannes to the doctor. Johannes said he wanted to a referring to a cannabis doctor. There is one in Denmark and he sees this also on the system now. So you can get supplies from the government to buy the cannabis oil from her. It's only one doctor and now she has nine months of waiting list. But when Johannes, he told his doctor that he wanted to go to her and he said, you can't do that. And I said, oh, yes he can, because he has helped multiple people with sclerosa. And he's just looked at Johannes and me and asked, do you had sclerosa? And I just waved my hands and I just. What? What? And I looked at Johannes and I said to the doctor, why do you think he don't walk? And he looked at the screen and he said, oh yeah, I can see you have sclerosis, so I better give you that. Referring to the cannabis doctor. Yeah.
Only a big boy.
Yeah, he got quite of bad words thrown at his way.
You swore at him.
Yeah.
Good for you. Now when you, Johannes, do you need a walker to help you get around Assistance?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, he has a walker. You have been taking measurements, you have been in a wheelchair, but you throw that away, the first one.
Why?
Yeah, why did you do that?
I don't want to sit in one.
When you got the first wheelchair, were your legs feathered? Yeah, yeah. So you started using cannabis and they got better walking on.
Yeah.
He'D throw it on the compost from the animals. But we actually talked, just talked about before that if he didn't have cannabis, he couldn't walk at all.
So, Johannes, do you want me to enter you into a marathon race? There's a marathon in London, England. Do you want me to enter you into it?
Yeah, why not?
Yeah. I think it's, I think your story is remarkable that you, you are a cannabis user, a cannabis smoker obviously as well. Yeah, yeah. And I think, you know, stories like you, yours are very inspiring for people because it shows you how you have defied the odds. You said you would be probably be dead in a number of weeks if you didn't take cannabis. And here you are many years later.
Your program has given me the will to live again.
You know that our program has given you the will to live?
Yeah.
Well, that's fantastic.
Yeah. Like I told you in the email, Ian, when I have been visiting Johannes and the cannabis is podcast isn't working, that's all he's talking about. So, yeah, he don't. Doesn't matter. If I'm going to visit him, I just have to visit him. I just have to make the podcast work so we can listen to you.
Well, we've, we have a couple of episodes coming up in the next several weeks of There's a young fellow in Scotland who had brain cancer and he is now clear and he's past the five year Mark, which is very good. And we have an episode coming up with the CEO, chief executive officer of a company in the United States who had breast cancer at a young age. She had 13 surgeries and now she helps people in the United States get their medical cannabis cards. So those will be coming up in the next few weeks. And we just keep doing this because we hope it inspires other people around the world. And we're very thankful that it inspires you and gives you the will to live. And you know, when I hear stories like that, you made my day.
Yeah.
And I want to thank you so much for sharing your story and I just hope you start to get better and one day you'll be in a marathon.
Yeah.
It'S exactly the same here. I feel so well behaved from your side and from science, you get exactly into the heart on people. And I want to pay you for.
This like I told you in the story.
Well, we can talk about that when we're offline. Okay. Thank you so much for sharing your story.
