In this YouTube excerpt, Dr. David Perlmutter expands on themes from his book Brain Maker, emphasizing that a healthy gut microbiome is shaped not only by diet but also by lifestyle factors. He explains how stress raises cortisol, which can damage gut lining and disrupt bacterial balance, increasing leaky‑gut risk. He highlights the role of targeted nutritional supplements and provides recipe ideas to support beneficial microbes. Perlmutter also warns about the widespread overuse of antibiotics in the United States, noting their profound negative impact on gut bacteria, which in turn affects overall longevity and brain health.

When people read Brain Maker, clearly there's a lot of emphasis on choosing the right foods to nurture your gut bacteria to really create what we call a healthy microbiome. But there are a lot of other issues that we tackle that have a strong bearing on determining whether or not your microbiome will be healthy or not. For example, one big player in the health of the microbiome and really in this leaky gut mentality is the idea that stress, by raising a chemical made by the adrenal glands called cortisol, can actually be profoundly detrimental to the balance of bacteria that live within the gut and also to the junctions, the lining of the gut that keep that gut integrity and reduce the risk of leaky gut. We talk about, for example, the use of various nutritional supplements that can augment the health of the microbiome and of course provide various recipes for preparing those very foods that you can consume that are important. Beyond that, I think it's important to emphasize that we visit the notion of overusage of antibiotics in America, which is really quite profound, and that's been the topic of a number of bestselling books recently. We know that when we take an antibiotic, it does have a direct and fairly profound effect on damaging those very Gut bacteria upon whom we depend on to be healthy and for our longevity, and certainly, as we talk about in Brain Maker, for our brain health as well.
