Custom Super Smash Bros. Melee-Themed Twitch Overlay Tour

David VKimble walks through his custom Twitch overlay built around Super Smash Bros. Melee, with a Press Start countdown, trophy-get animations for followers and donations, and a camera scene modeled as the Melee trophy room. Alerts trigger Melee sound effects and challenger-approach screens, a derp counter tracks mistakes, and the credits sequence was edited in Dolphin emulator to swap in his own branding.

Hello, my name is David VKimble and you're seeing my Twitch overlay. Of course it is inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melee, and I'm really excited to give you a quick tour of what it entails, kind of my design inspiration, and just some of the sources and scenes that I have set up for it. This is obviously mimicking the beginning of Adventure Mode where it normally says "Press Start." I've replaced the text with "Stream starting soon" in the same typeface. And yeah, we'll kind of go through this step by step. This is the sort of countdown timer screen before the stream starts, but then as the timer gets down to the 10-second mark or so, I initiate this sequence.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1!
So that's the very dramatic opening to my stream. Obviously it's the Super Smash Bros. Melee opening, so I would have it no other way. And that, that music plays for a while. I can end it whenever I'd like, but you'll see kind of the basic elements of this overlay. Below me we have the stream labels from Streamlabs. Which kind of look at the latest followers, the top donations, those sorts of things. And they're actually color-coded by Player 1, 2, 3, 4, and a CPU color. That's actually very deliberately chosen. That's often overlooked. The background video is a behind-the-menu loop that seamlessly loops. That's 23 FPS at 720p in WebM video file format. So it's low on resources. It doesn't, like, tax my system too much, basically. And above my head we have a card from this game's winner screen. Uh, you'll recognize it from that. But above that we have a lottery counter which was coded by my friend Cryptek. Awesome guy, I commissioned him, he made some amazing stuff. As well as the event list above it, he also made that. And that's obviously taking inspiration from the menus of Super Smash Bros. Melee. So let's see what happens when I get a new follower. So that's just like the new trophy get animation. When you get a new trophy in Super Smash Bros Melee, the text kind of comes down and says, you know, trophy get. And in this case we have new follower, and then we have the name of the person that followed below that. Triptek also made that, so shoutouts to him for that. Next I'll show you what happens when I get a new subscriber. So that's inspired. This is a test. Obviously from, again, Venture Mode from Melee, when you complete a stage or you complete a section of it, that comes up with that fanfare, which is pretty cool. If somebody donates, this comes up. This is a test donation for $75. And a lot of the other alerts that I have have that similar alert box that you might recognize from Melee, but they all have different, different sounds, different little jingles. This is a test bit alert. Um, so, but then the only other variant that is included in this so far is when I get raided. So here's what happens when I get a raid. It's the challenger approaching screen, just like when you unlock a character in Melee. And let's say I get a particularly big raid, right? Let's say I get just a colossally large raid. I might go above and beyond and do this raid. On my Stream Deck, I have a button to do this. And people really like that because obviously it replaces the entire screen and displays their name if somebody raids me. And I have a lot of fun with that one. So that's kind of the overview of the main screen. I also have a channel point reward for a Donkey Kong appearance.
This game's hilarious! Oh, Donkey Kong!
It's literally just when Donkey Kong wins in Super Smash Bros. Melee, that little fanfare plays and that animation plays. So, um, that's a fun one. Let's say I have to get up from my desk and get us some glass of water or something like that, I have to take a break. I go to this screen. It's just like the continue screen from the 1-player modes in Melee. And you'll see that I have mostly Classic Mode trophies, but I also cycled in some of the Adventure Mode trophies also. Depending on what I felt was a better fit. And yeah, this just loops seamlessly from the entire cast. And obviously you can actually select yes or no on this screen like you can in the game, but that gives you an idea of how it looks. Now I'll go back to my main screen here and— oh, by the way, here's what it looks like with gameplay. Well, that's not what I wanted you to see. That's, that's just Infinity. You guys don't need to see that. Here we go. So this is— here's the game. My green screen's a little off right now. I see that up there, so ignore, ignore that. But any gameplay would obviously be in this box. And that's that. I'll now show you the lottery. So to kind of explain more about this derp counter, if I make a mistake on stream, chat can do a derp command. And if they do that, then do this. And every time I increase the derp counter, it adds one to the counter like you see here. Then at the very end of my stream, I will go to the lottery, which looks like this. And obviously you'll recognize this from the lottery in Super Smash Bros. Melee. But when it comes to my stream, when you spend one of the coins, it looks like this. It rolls this, and I might do something silly. And people can redeem them. For example, I can do one of these. Little micro dab for ya. And that sound you just heard, by the way, was— it's on the Melee disc, but it's actually an unused, like, positive/good sound effect in Melee. And here's the negative one. So I had to find a way to use those, and I made use of them here. And then what you can see is I have a camera scene. So this one is obviously heavily inspired from the trophy room. I'm gonna remove my webcam for a second here so I can show you the details. So Joseph Demurefire made this for me, awesome guy, and he basically modeled all this from scratch using the trophy room from Melee as an inspiration and then adding some things in that's kind of for my own personal flair. For example, the Banjo-Kazooie one that's kind of up there in center, and the Smash Ultimate poster on this— on the wall. And then obviously we have a Switch and a Wii U and a Wii and 3DS and, uh, Jones Soda bottles, which wouldn't actually have been in the actual game. Uh, so just— and then of course we have the frame, the pause screen in front, which mimics the pause menu from Melee. So, um, that's some inspiration there. And yeah, so I'm— you've seen the bulk of it so far. There's only 2 more things to really show you. And the final one is the, the credit sequence. So I do have a credit sequence on the end of all my streams, and I wanted to mimic Melee's as close as possible. So without further ado, enjoy the credit sequence for my streams, and I'll show you a few more scenes after that. So as you can see here, I have completely customized this, and the way I've done that is I've replaced the names of the people with transparency in Dolphin, the Dolphin emulator, which makes them all invisible. And I've kind of replaced some of the logos with my own in Dolphin, but with the low textures feature. And I've added some stuff in post to make it look like it's credit sequence for me instead of for the game. Or just some random highlights from the stream from yesteryear.
Congratulations!
So there you have that. And yeah, this is the screen that appears before we raid somebody, and this is a little warning stating that, you know, this— hey, the stream might not be family-friendly. Because I tend to do a family-friendly stream myself, so I like to provide a little warning, but also mimicking Melee's style of message in the process. If I don't raid someone, if I just end stream outright, I'll play this scene instead.
Game over.
So kind of depressing, but that's the idea. It's supposed to motivate me to raid someone. So there you have it. There's a good overview of the stream. I hope you enjoyed it. If you are interested in catching me live, I'm at twitch.tv/ www.twitch.tv/DavidVKimble, and I stream on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays in the evening. I would love to see you there. If you have more questions about the stream, please drop by and answer any— I'll answer any questions that you have. Looking forward to seeing you there. Thanks for watching.
