I'm working on a platform fighting game.

A developer spent five months building Smack Studio, a platform fighter with Melee-style gameplay and tools to create custom characters and stages. It uses a hybrid 2D/3D animation system that treats sprite parts like a skeleton, skipping tedious frame-by-frame work. The Kickstarter just launched with a tier that puts your character or stage in the final game.

¡Hey guys! ¿Cómo estáis? I wanted to make an update video for you guys to talk about the last 5 or so months of my life, which has been spent on a game called Smack Studio. It's a platform fighting game, but it's a sandbox platform fighting game. So it has the kind of the fluidity of Smash Bros. Melee or Project M gameplay-wise, but it has a unique feature of being bundled with creation tools for characters and stages. Right now we're in early access and the character editor is available to use. We just launched a Kickstarter page, so that's why I wanted to make this video to raise awareness for that and tell you guys about it. And I think a lot of people that watch my videos would, would at least be interested in it because it basically takes, you know, everyone that's played Smash or a fighting game has wanted to put their own characters in or, you know, make their own movesets or what have you. And this is probably the closest thing I can imagine to an accessible way to do it, 'cause it basically combines 2D animation and 3D animation in a sense, 'cause the, the problem with 2D animation is it's really cumbersome, it's like frame-by-frame animation and it takes forever. The problem with 3D animation is you have to create a mesh and you have to rig it to a skeleton and do UV wrapping and it's very complicated, but when it comes to the actual animation, 3D animation's a lot easier, so what Smack Studio does is it basically combines them. You can create one sprite, split it into parts, attach it to a skeleton, and then you can basically animate it as if it was a 3D model. It will actually rotate in 3D space. It's really wild. You should definitely check it out. And again, I think it's probably the easiest way— the easiest way that I know of to create your own characters. So if that sounds like you're— something that you'd be interested in, please check it out. There'll be a link in the description, obviously. And if you become a backer, you'll get certain reward tiers. So for example, You can get your name in the credits, that's if you do any rewards here at all. You can get a Smack Studio t-shirt like the one that I'm wearing. You can— ooh, and the most exciting perks are that kind of more near the top end of the tiers. You will be able to put your own stage or character in the base roster or stage list. So that means that you'll be able to work with our team, we'll get our heads together, come up with a really cool idea, and your idea, your concept, stage, stuff will be in the full game. So there's a lot more other rewards too. It's obviously very limited, it's just gonna be during the month of February. So please check it out if it sounds interesting to you. And, uh, yeah, that's really everything I wanted to say about it. If you have feedback, I would love to hear your feedback about the game. Thank you for watching, and I'll catch you guys on the next one. Let's just place the hatch.
