Welcome to the Jordan Agriculture and Research Center, commonly known as JARC. On behalf of Dr. Miguel Pedroza, please view this orientation video in preparation for your participation in the Olfactory Perception of Aromas in Red Wine research study. JARC is located at 2703 Barstow Avenue on the California State University, Fresno campus. Please arrive at JARC 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment. A research assistant will greet you at the front entrance and escort you to the wonderful conference room number 108. On the day of your appointment, please don't wear perfume, cologne, or scented products. Avoid eating pungent or spicy foods, and reschedule if you have cold or flu symptoms. Once seated, the assistant will provide you with a consent form that includes a description of the research being conducted. After you've agreed to participate, the research assistant will lead you through an olfactory acuity test, which will determine if you're a good fit for this study. If you're not a good fit, you'll be excused at that time. Once you're confirmed as a participant in the study, you'll continue with a warm-up exercise designed to orient you to the steps of the experiment, which are demonstrated in this video. When we're ready to begin the study, a research assistant will escort you to a sensory booth where you'll follow the instructions on the iPad. You'll be assessing 7 flights of red wine samples. There is no time limit, but the estimated amount of time to complete the evaluation is about 15 minutes. You'll be presented with 3 samples. 2 will smell the same and one will be different. Your task is to identify the sample that has a different smell. different smell or aroma. After you're seated in the sensory booth, switch on your cubicle light to indicate to the researcher that you're ready. A sliding door will open and the researcher will present a tray with flights of covered samples. Please don't taste or drink the samples. Smell the samples only and take your time. There's no time limit for the evaluation. Begin with the first sample on your left. Remove the COVID and swirl the glass a couple of times. Sniff at the centre of the wine glass. Try and take no more than 3 sniffs per sample and always work from left to right.
Use the iPad to indicate which sample is different and always make a choice.
The iPad screen will prompt you when you've completed the exercise. Switch on the cubicle light to indicate to the researcher that you have finished, and please remain quietly seated until the assistant excuses you. Thank you for participating in this study. You'll receive a $5 gift card as compensation, and we'll send you an email when it's time to sign up for your next session. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
