Hi, my name is Gerhard Schwartner and welcome to Selling Power tv. Today we have a very special guest, Jim Cathcart. He's a good friend. He is an amazing speaker and coach and mentor. Welcome, Jim.
Thank you, Gerhard.
The reason we are getting together is you're teaching a masterclass about the topic of mentorship. Why is this so important?
If you think about top achievers in any field, every single one of them, without exception, had a or several mentors, people they turn to who are further development level than them on some aspect of what they do well in business. How does that apply to us? Well, look at who you admire. But that's only useful to a point. If you want to go further in your path, there's got to be a point where you engage with that person and you get their direct guidance to you. How would that work for me?
So what is the role of the mentor and how is that relationship structured so that there's accountability?
It needs to be thought of in contrast with a coach. Maybe the most effective way to think of coaching, business coach or otherwise, is an athletic coach. They're not only going to tell you what to do, they're going to watch you do it or have you report back and then they're going to correct you and send you back to do it again until you get it right. A mentor is like a wise elder best friend. The mentor's job is not to make you better. It's to advise, encourage, support, guide, open doors for things like that that help you get better through your own energies.
How many people are you currently mentoring?
I have about 20 that I'm currently actively mentoring. I meet with them every week and we take a look at the things they've done and how it's working for them. And a lot of times when I come onto those calls, I'll listen for a while and I'll say, gerhard, let's rethink what you're doing because what you're trying to build is X. What if X didn't matter at all? Have you considered Y as a better alternative? Because you could just shift your weight to that without losing what you've already built and maybe get a kind of booster rocket advancement. And sometimes I do that and they walk away just going, of course. Why didn't I think of that?
What is the number one reason why people get lost in their quest?
They stop thinking about what they really want. Say, when I start a mentorship relationship, I always start with the same question, what do you want? When you think about it, Every day the world asks that question. All day long. You go to a coffee shop, the barista says, good morning, what do you want? And if you don't know, then you're a problem. And if you never decide what you want, get what you get. Either nothing or what other people want by default. So I help people determine what it is they really want. Now I ask them, why do you want that? Well, because of the. And why do you want that? Well, because of it. And why is that important? You know, and we finally hit a brick wall or a rock bottom and there's no further answer that's different from the others. Then I know we're talking about what they really want. Now let's look at your life, your business, your relationships, and structure them to bring you more and more of what you want.
What can people expect you to contribute in this masterclass besides the mentoring process?
Well, the mentoring process is simply a structure. The purpose of mentorship is the growth of the mentee or protege. What matters is that outcome, the effect on the mentee. So if someone comes to me and they say, jim, I want to be a best selling author. I want to build a business that's number one in my category. I want to be in the top 1% of my niche in this industry. Okay, we've got something to work on. I'm going to measure my success not by the mentoring, but by their advancement.
I want the audience also to learn more about your website. What is your website?
